Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9 Tablets hands-on [Video]

With the iPad dominant in both market- and mind-share, it takes something special to distract from Apple’s all-conquering slate. Archos reckons it has the answer with the 80 G9 and 101 G9 tablets, a pair of low-cost models announced last week and priced from just $279 despite a 1.5GHz TI dual-core OMAP4 processor. SlashGear grabbed some hands-on time with the two slates today, to see if they lived up to their lofty aspirations.

New hope for the Nokia and Microsoft partnership came this week with the unveiling of the N9 MeeGo handset and the Windows Phone Mango version of it dubbed the “Sea Ray.” The N950 sports a similar styling but will have a larger screen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and be deemed a developer-only device. All in all, a positive week in developments for Nokia, but not so much for RIM. The BlackBerry maker began layoffs this week and further cut back sales estimates of the PlayBook tablet.

France wants tablet-tax for iPad and Android slates while Windows exempt

French legislators are considering imposing a tablet-tax that would affect all models with at least 40GB of internal storage, though Windows-based slates would be exempt. The proposal, reported by Numerama, is part of French "private copy" taxation which imposes extra fees on digital media like blank CDs, DVDs and thumb-drives; it's estimated it would add up to €12 ($16) to the cost of Apple's top-spec iPad or Android tablets. However, because Windows is classed as a "full" OS rather than a mobile one like iOS or Android, it escapes the taxation. Read The Full Story

Archos 70b Android ereader up for pre-order in Europe

Archos' 70b Android-based ereader has gone up for pre-order in Europe, with France the first country to get the 7-inch touchscreen device. Priced at €99.99 ($131), the Archos 70b is expected to ship sometime between the end of December and before January 7 2011; it has a WVGA resolution display - capable of video playback as well as showing ebooks - along with WiFi b/g and 4GB of onboard storage. There's also an SD card slot for up to 16GB of extra capacity, stereo speakers and a USB port. Archos Arnova $200 netbook not worth the money

Given Archos' weren't exactly responsible for the design and manufacture of their last netbook, the Archos 10, we're guessing they haven't had much of a hand in the new Archos Arnova bar the badging.  The 10.2-inch ultraportable is already on sale for the bargain price of £126.75 ($202) through Amazon, though there are understandably a few compromises made in order to hit that figure.
