Some guy came up with one of the most ingenious uses of elastic since putting it in clothing. He used bands of elastic to suspend the hard drives in his computer thus reducing the noise made by his hard drives.

Picture courtesy of Jason at HACKS

As its been stated, the one downside to this hack is that you lose the passive cooling that was occurring when the drives were attached to your case. Also, you’ll either have to use up your optical drive bays, buy smaller hard drives, or make a custom drive cage to do this.

However the cost should be minimal as the last I checked elastic was pretty cheap and plentifully available from your favorite department store. This might not be beneficial to you at all unless you are having some serious issues with noise, but remember, you have to have plenty of airflow inside your case if you are going to do this or your drives might go all China syndrome on you.

This nifty little gadget was created in an effort to make it possible to see who was online from across the room, or just in passing. So he took some pictures of the few people who he truly cared when they were online, put some LED lights behind them, and then did a lot of more technical stuff to make the lights light up when that person was online.

It apparently works with Skype or other IM services. From what I can see from the picture there is a battery pack, a controller board of some sort, and then Plexiglas for the Picture/LED combos.

The gentleman was kind enough to put the instructions, parts list, and all that jazz up over at his website. The board might be the hardest part to recreate as it’s not a remanufactured board, so you’ll actually have to do some soldering and all that jazz including a PIC18f2220 chip with some RS232 coms and LEDs go on the other pins, anyways, it’s at his site.

There are so many USB flash drives on the market these days that it’s hard to find a design that it unique. The Memory Infinite USB drive is however, one of the most original concepts I have seen in some time.

The Memory Infinite features both a male and female USB connector. The idea is that you could daisy-chain multiple drives together to swap out files or share their combined memory.

I’m not sure how practical the design is, but I’ll admit that it’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, it is only a concept, so we’ll likely never see this put into production.

When is an iPhone not an iPhone? When it’s an iPod Touch. Apparently the iPod Touch is having a bad case of identity crisis. On more than one occasion, it will try to convince you that it is really an iPhone.

If you happen to have one of these new iPods, make sure that it is password protected, then lock it. Now try to unlock it with the wrong password a few times. Uh oh, your iPhone is now disabled! I didn’t know your iPod could lock your iPhone, oh wait, that’s just a typo. Here I thought we’d just found a way to remotely disable someone’s iPhone.

Did you know that your iPod Touch had a camera in it? Well your PC doesn’t. Due to some leftover code from the iPhone, when you plug your Touch into your computer (Mac or PC) it thinks that you’ve just plugged in something with a camera. Seriously Apple, what gives?

Kids have got it so easy these days, what with cell phones, high-speed internet and all of the other cool technology that wasn’t around when I was a kid. Heck, I remember when I was a teenager the game Spin the Bottle actually required the use of a real bottle. Thankfully youngsters don’t have to deal with all of the problems that arose from using a glass bottle.

Electric Spin the Bottle is so much more…..electronic than the way we used to play it. The “bottle” is set on a stand and makes noises and flashes while it’s spinning. Hell, you even have buttons to press, and it tells you what you have to do. Finally, you have more choices than just kissing the person that it points to (do you really need any other choices?).

If you want to be that nerdy kid that brings the stupid toy to a party (or you’re young enough that something this dorky won’t necessarily get you beat up) then you can pick one of these up for around $25.

The CA series, much like their AC counterparts, are meant to stand up to all the elements. The only difference is that this time, the speaker company from Maine made them flush mountable.

There are 8 models in this line, ranging from 5.25” all the way up to 8 inches. There are dedicated woofers, speakers with dual voice coils to cover the highs, and Mid/Bass speakers.

Some of them come with grills to hide away the speakers, others you can either let them show, which isn’t an entirely bad idea considering they are little works of art, or you can find some way to cover them on your own. As I said, they speakers are literally almost exactly like their enclosed counterparts, but it’s up to you to mount them where you like.

It is pretty useless in my opinion since insect and flies don’t stay still for you to catch them. Smacking them with your hand would probably give you better chance of taking them down.

Personally, I don’t think this picture tells us anything. It’s quite obviously a Photoshop job. This is apparent because the picture is actually of someone’s desktop. You can still see the outline of the window and the title of the image “nano-flower.psd”.

Were this a picture of the actual devices, I might give it a little more credit, but all this tells me is that someone has decent photoshop skills and doesn’t know how to hold their digital camera.

The auction includes the NeXT computer cube, a matching grayscale display, speakers, all cables, an extra MoBo, all the media (books, discs), and the original sticker sheet.

Helio released a series of new features with the Fin including HelioUP, Helio H.O.T. (Helio On Top), and Garmin Mobile. Below are videos of Helio H.O.T. first and then HelioUP. Then I threw in a video of the Media Player in action.

HelioUP comes pre-installed, and Helio H.O.T. and the Garmin Mobile app both have to be downloaded, the Media Player is also already on the Helio Fin. Using HelioUp is so simple, all you have to do is take the picture or make the video and then a button pops up for the right soft button that is the HelioUP button. Hit that button and a Java app launches that gets some basic info, like whether you want it set to private or public, a file name, and tags and then you just hit go and it starts uploading which takes no time at all on the speedy 3G connection.

Helio H.O.T. is easy to download, just go to Apps and there is already a link in there to download it. Hit the link, follow the prompts to download it and then it boots up and you are on your way. After you install H.O.T. there is a scrolling bar of RSS news on the main page of your Helio Fin. Click on any of those stories and the RSS reader is automatically brought up. Helio H.O.T. comes preloaded with several great RSS feeds already including all of the RSS feeds from Yahoo!. Adding more is always and option, and can be done through your account on Helio.com.

The media player just kicks in whenever you select some sort of media to play, its really that simple. Its not really a new feature, just felt like grabbing a clip of it for those that had never seen it before. The video is also a pretty good example of the speaker sound quality from the Helio Fin.

So this morning I received in my hot little hands a Helio Fin. Its been well covered on SlashGear, and even more so in our forums. If you want the full list of details you can read the full information here.

The new features this Helio has going for it, though, are what you are likely most interested in and thus what I will cover most. First, there is the 3MP camera that is built in, then there is the thin and sexy clamshell form factor; I have borrowed a pink RAZR for comparison. Other than that there’s Helio’s Ultimate Messaging Suite and Ultimate Inbox. The new features on the software side aren’t small in comparison either. First there is Helio On Top or H.O.T., then there is HelioUP making it ever easier to geo-tag and instantly upload photos and videos taken with the Helio Fin. Last but not least there is Garmin Mobile, their new turn-by-turn GPS navigation software.

I plan on showing all of the above in the review, but Garmin Mobile will probably have to come later as I know how eager you all are to get the news; well, I’m just as eager to get it to you. So let’s begin!

Upon first inspection I was very impressed with how small and lightweight the Fin is, it’s taking some getting used to: I am used to having a flip phone where either the screen portion or the keypad portion is significantly heavier than the other, which isn’t the case with this phone, it seems nearly perfectly balanced.

As usual with Helio handsets the user interface is simple enough for a 2 year old to figure out, and that’s a good thing. There are pictures below, and video here.

The Helio Fin

As I stated above, the phone is extremely thin, and very good looking. The dark blue magnesium body looks black from a distance, and looks great from any perspective. It really is a much longer phone than the RAZR, but not in a bad way: it feels great in the hand and the screen looks amazing.

Pics of Fin and comparison to the RAZR

3MP Camera

The Camera is quite easy to use, and uploading with HelioUP is even easie: just shoot the video or snap the picture and then a little HelioUP button comes up for the right soft button, hit that and then it asks for some basic info and you are uploading.

Ultimate Messaging Suite

The Ultimate Messaging Suite is a breeze to set up and use and is quite speedy with the 3G connection.

Ultimate Inbox

I only use Gmail and my Slashgear account, setting up my Gmail account has been a breeze. I’ll work on setting up my Slashgear account later.

Helio H.O.T.

Helio H.O.T. is the new RSS reader and it works great, it comes with all of the Yahoo feeds pre-loaded as well as a few others including The Onion; you can add more through your Helio account online.

Buddy Beacon

Not much new here, I don’t know very many people with a Helio handset, in fact the list is currently one person long, which says a lot about technology and Indiana as well as about how many friends I have! But it came up, did the update and then started working immediately with MapQuest Maps.

GPS with Google Maps

This app came up easily and started working instantly, it knew right where I was and worked almost exactly like it does on my PC. Once again, this isn’t a really new feature, but it’s still impressive.

MySpace on Helio

This is accessible via the browser window, and just like everything else on the Helio, it looks great. It is easy to navigate and write on too.

Final Thoughts

I love it. There are some downsides, well really just two: the first is the microSD card slot, which is underneath the battery cover, right below the battery, meaning you have to remove the battery to insert or remove a card. The only other thing is that I don’t like how the small external display collects fingerprints like it’s CSI, but that is easily fixed by just wiping it off. Like I said, overall I love it and I don’t foresee myself having need of another phone for quite some time.

A Judge ordered the RIAA to pay Debbie Foster, a defendant on a witch-hunt party by the Nazi-like RIAA. Ms. Fosters was awarded $68,685 in attorney fees by the court, however the RIAA has failed to cough up the money to pay her. Ms. Foster is asking the court to enter judgment against RIAA.

It is funny how RIAA is so quick to take someone else money but when its turn to pay up, they went AWOL. I don’t condone piracy, but the witch-hunt by RIAA disgust me.

Here is what RIAA has to say about this ruling.

We respectfully believe that this ruling is in error and is an isolated occurrence. Our interest in these cases is enforcing the rights of the record companies and artists, while fostering an online environment where the legal marketplace can flourish and the music industry can invest in the new bands of tomorrow. In the handful of cases where the person engaging in the illegal activity in the household is not the person responsible for the ISP account, we look to gather the facts quickly and do our best to identify the appropriate defendant.

Remember that story that we ran yesterday on the huge Nokia battery recall? Nokia has made an official statement regarding the story. The recall is for real, but they wanted to clarify one minor detail.

Apparently this is a voluntary recall, not your regular run-of-the-mill recall. I guess I need to read more of the fine print because to me, if some thing is bad and they ask you to return it for a replacement, that’s a recall. Here is what the Nokia spokesperson had to say about the matter. “The difference is that a recall is something a company has to do. We did not. We simply felt that in this case, it was the right thing to do.”

They are saying now that the only problem you will experience is that the battery may swell and cause minor damage to your phone. Regardless, if you have one of the affected batteries I would highly suggest contacting them for a replacement.

I really don’t know how to say this other than to state that technology has come to a point where what’s important is better looking breasts. I mean why else would some Israeli (shouldn’t they be the last ones worried about this) scientists be developing/testing an internal bra?

By internal I don’t mean further integrated into clothing, I mean under-your-skin surgically integrated. Sadly, from this point on in the article, I don’t know where to go other than to the gutter, but I will try and keep it as informational as possible.

I guess they must have noticed a trend in sagging, misshapen, or asymmetrical breasts, I don’t really see any other reasons for even developing such a technology. Apparently, breast augmentations even up to this very day can leave their target breasts looking, off, is probably the best way to say it, so, this integrated bra not only attaches to your shoulders and rib cage, but also fills in the gaps with silicone which will probably slightly increase your bust size.

The procedure has several benefits over today’s breast augmentations in that it requires fewer and smaller incisions, and that the recovery time is less and thus the costs will probably be lower. As I already stated it is still in its developmental stages, so if you feel you need breast augmentation, you will still have to go the way of the silicon or saline filled water balloons.

They are 1.5 fluid ounces each and look cool as hell, even in their 8-bit glory. What would you do while drinking from these glasses? Play Pong. No, I would recommend you start with Pac-Man, and then maybe, as your faculties leave you, you could downgrade to Pong.

clubNAMCO is only making 2500 of these, and are charging $29.99 each, so hurry up and go get yours now. As always, drink responsibly and never drink and drive, or you could do with them what I assume most people who buy them will, put them on a shelf and never use them.

I’m sure that George Lucas and some of his marketing buddies were sitting around trying to think up something extra special for this year’s Comic Con when they realized that Darth Vader not only sent many messages via hologram, but he had a head large enough to be turned into a bobble-head without much resizing. That’s really the best explanation that I’ve got.

In all honesty it looks more like Darth Vader died and came back as a blue glowie similar to Yoda and Obi-wan, which is not the case. I imagine that once removed from its packaging (if you dare) any Star Wars geek friends of yours will be quite confused. You won’t have to worry about confusing them too much though, less than 1500 of these will actually be produced.

I’m beginning to wonder if Sony has made any batteries in the past few years that don’t have the chance of exploding. Toshiba has just announced a recall of around 5,100 Sony-made laptop batteries that affect 10 laptop models.

5 of the laptop models were sold only in Japan, while the others were sold in other parts of the world. The notebooks were made in December of 2005 and sold between January and April of 2006. As of now there have been no reports of injuries related to the batteries, however, they have the potential to cause burns and damage the computers.

Toshiba will be releasing a utility that customers can use to check their laptops for the recalled batteries. If they have one of the affected batteries, Toshiba will send them a pre-paid envelope with which they can return it. Sadly, they won’t ship out a replacement until after your defective one has been received.

The stats aren’t much to get excited about, 1.5Ghz VIA CPU (which means power consumption should be low), 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, and DVD Burner. Software is limited to Vista Home and Open Office 2.2, pretty much all thats needed, and did I mention no junk software installed?

$300 gets you a computer that you can use yourself for basic use, or send to a loved one who only does basic computing, and you don’t have to worry about the pre-installed garbage bringing the PC to a creeping halt. I personally would love to see one of this at Wal-Mart with Ubuntu installed, not only would that be a major step for the open source movement, but if Dell is any indication it could be cause for a slightly cheaper version of the PC and better use of the limited system resources.

According to a new study, Blu-ray is not faring well over in the European market. The study found that HD-DVD players are outselling their Blu-ray competitors 3:1.

Unfortunately, the figures are somewhat misleading since they, like other studies, don’t take into account PS3 sales. The PS3 makes it very difficult to track sales figures because many people that own PS3s may not even use it to watch Blu-ray titles. While on the other hand, some people may buy one because it is a cheap Blu-ray player that also happens to play games.

It’s great to look at all of these sales figures and think that one may be winning over the other, but I don’t think that either one of them looks like it will be the clear winner any time soon.

The chairman of the FCC is too. Wireless services providers are generally the first in line to purchase new wireless spectrum’s when they come up for sale. Well guess what, with TV going digital the 700 MHz band is about to become very empty.

The chairman is trying to make it so that anyone who buys into this band has to allow open or “unlocked” phones and allow users to download anything they want to said devices (except for illegal stuff or anything that could harm the network).

Apparently he is not pleased with the current US market for cell phones where features such as WiFi have been stripped from phones for years just so service providers can keep customers using their fee based services.

Now all we can do is hope that these proposed rules go through.

So, you waited in line for days to get your precious (insert Gollum reference here) iPhone, went through the pains of activating it (with or without a contracted service plan). So now you are addicted and out of the blue you break, lose, or have your precious stolen, what do you do besides curl up in the fetal position and cry?

Well now there is a company exploring the possibility of insuring the device against such travesties and more. Safeware is a purveyor of insurance to people with valuable devices, the list is long, but just about anything computer or cell phone related seems to be covered.

The average cost to insure a $600 device through safeware is $85 per year which gives an estimate of what one could expect to pay if/when they decide to insure the iPhone. From what I have read about Apple’s current AppleCare products, they cost a bit more on average, and they don’t cover theft, accidents, or loss. AT&T won’t cover the device because the insurance would cost too much to be marketable. So your only options right now for insurance are to hope whatever happens, happens in your home or vehicle and your insurance for either of those covers it.

Hopefully Safeware decides to insure the device, otherwise you’ll have to look towards other companies to cover the normal cell phone insurance for your iPhone.

Coming straight from the folks who brought you the Ariel Atom 2 is their latest addition to the product line, the Enertia. This motorcycle is all electric, has a top speed of 50MPH, a max range of 45 miles @ 25mph and weighs a mere 275 pounds.

The bike comes in various colors, and is made to fit the greatest range of possible drivers possible. So it fits all types of riders, how does it drive though? Well luckily there is software built into it that is user configurable to allow for adjustment between and apparent inverse relationship between speed and distance. So a novice rider can get on and configure it for max distance and take it easy just getting the hang of riding. At the same time an experienced rider can configure it for top speed and make good use of the fast acceleration and respectable top speed.

Alright, so for the gearheads, some more stats, naught to 50MPH (top speed) in 6 seconds and naught to 30MPH in 3.8 seconds. Three hour recharge time from 0-100%, and a flat torque line, which means all of the torque is available from 0MPH.

The lack of a transmission makes it feasible to park the bike inside just like a regular bicycle because there is no concern for fluid leakage or emissions as there are none of either.

The boys at Brammo Motorsports have done it again, I think I want one.

The good news is the feature list for set-top boxes should be increasing. Set-Top boxes should also become consumer electronics devices, sold and marketed to the consumer instead of video service providers.

Essentially the reason for the price hike is the FCC is finally enforcing previous rulings which push for user-marketed boxes, whereas the current market is setup so that the various cable companies select the boxes they want to allow their customers to use and only market those boxes to the consumer. This is a problem because you cannot purchase a given box, and even if you could the level of interoperability is low at best. The entire idea of user-marketed and purchasable boxes is driven by the CableCARD standard (by Cable Television Laboratories, Inc.) and by the FCC in an effort separate the marketing of video services and consumer electronics devices. This standard allows for the lease of just a card (roughly PCMCIA in shape and size) and should allow the user to have the card installed into any device of their choosing. Currently the only consumer products I know of that utilize the CableCARD standard are the Series 3 Tivo , ATI’s OCUR and some televisions.

The drive spins up at 4200rmp, so don’t expect it to be the fastest little drive out there, but it is the largest capacity 2.5-inch drive to date. If you have a tendancy to drop things, its 16-point omnidirectional shock mound design should keep your data save in the event of a fall.

You can pick up one of these now for $229, a 5400prm 120GB drive is due to be released later this year for $129.

Walt has some concern regarding the input method iPhone is using. The virtual keyboard is not something speed texter would normally use. “I wanted to throw it out the window after 3 days.” However after the 5th days, he started to feel comfortable with the virtual keyboard and said the iPhone could type as well and as fast as his Treo with great accuracy.

Unlike the Microsoft definition of MVP, this YOTO PMP – the MVP-800 – could easily stand for “Muchos Value Player”. Well, it could if it wasn’t Chinese, as I don’t think they used “muchos” in the Far East. Anyway, the equivalent of $52 gets you a slickly designed 2GB PMP with a luxurious 2.8-inch QVGA screen and TransFlash memory expansion slot.

Despite the low-price it’s not short on features. AVI XviD, WMA and MP3 formats are supported, as are JPEG images, all making the most of that 320 x 240 display. There’s also an eBook reader and eight different equaliser presets in there, packed into a casing just 98 x 55 x 9mm. Files are loaded via a USB 2.0 port, and it’s capable of multi-tasking so you can be reading a book while listening to some vintage ABBA.

Available in two versions, 2GB and 4GB, each can be expanded by up to 2GB of TransFlash memory. Whether we’ll ever see it outside of China is another matter entirely.
