Microsoft announces Play To Earn rewards on Xbox Live

In an effort to get Xbox Live users to play more of Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade games, the company will be launching a new “Play To Earn” rewards system on Xbox Live on April 1 that will reward gamers with free items and Microsoft Points in exchange for playing XBLA games. The new program is only available to Xbox Live Reward members, so if you aren’t a member, get signed up now to take advantage of the new rewards.

Microsoft currently has three ways that you’ll be able to earn new rewards. First, you can play 20 hours of any combination of XBLA games and receive a free avatar item. Second, you can purchase any combination of four XBLA games that cost at least 400 Microsoft Points each, and receive a free month of Xbox Live Gold. Lastly, you can spend 3,200 Microsoft Points on XBLA games and get 800 Microsoft Points in return.

Furthermore, Rewards members can attempt to black out all three XBLA Punchcards during the month of April, which will give themselves a spot in an “upcoming VIP Exclusives.” From the looks of it, it seems that every XBLA game will qualify you to earn rewards by playing them, and some of the most popular XBLA titles include Minecraft, Trials Evolution, Castle Crashers, The Walking Dead, and Limbo.

Furthermore, six new games will be released in the XBLA market in April. These include BattleBlock Theater, Double Dragon II, Motocross Madness, Sacred Citadel, God Mode, and Monaco. Frankly, the new Play To Earn looks pretty great, and it seems like an easy way to earn extra stuff, while playing your favorite games at the same time.

PlayStation Home Arcade arrives on PS Vita today

Sony has announced PS Vita users are getting PlayStation Home Arcade today, a new app for their portable gaming beast. PlayStation Home Arcade is basically what it sounds like – an app that allows you to buy and play classic arcade titles. There will also be a handful of newer titles on offer, and Sony is giving away some free games to celebrate the launch of PlayStation Home Arcade.

Normally, it seems like each title is going to be priced at $1.49. In celebrating the launch of PlayStation Home Arcade, Sony has made Icebreaker and WipEout 2D free, offering up a free demo of Scribble Shooter alongside those two titles. PlayStation Home Arcade is launching with more titles beyond those three though, so check out the full list below:

• Scribble Shooter (Demo available for Free) – $1.49
• Frogger – $1.49
• Time Pilot – $1.49
• Asteroids – $1.49

Sony says that if you have already purchased any of these games as an arcade cabinet within PlayStation Home, you’ll be able to download it for free within PlayStation Home Arcade. So, if you’ve already been using PlayStation Home to get your classic arcade kicks, you’ll have a bunch of games waiting for you on your PS Vita after today. The company has also released a launch trailer for PlayStation Home Arcade, so give it a look and see if it’s something you’re interested in.

The PlayStation Home Arcade app should be available for download now on the PlayStation Store. While it isn’t anywhere near as exciting as a new game announcement would have been, some PS Vita owners will definitely like the idea of taking old school arcade games with them on the go. Raspberry Pi MAME cabinet brings the arcade to your tiny fingertips

The $35 Raspberry Pi hobby board is one of the most innovative pieces of circuitry that we’ve seen yet. It’s so simple and cheap, yet it leads to thousands of hackers and modders cooking up their own concoctions of circuitry brilliance. One modder in particular, Sprite_tm, recently made a pocket-size MAME cabinet out of a Raspberry Pi and a few other pieces of circuitry.

Sprite uses a Raspberry Pi board to run the MAME from Linux, and then uses use an SPI-controlled 2.4-inch TFT display instead of dealing with video outputs. Sprite also wanted to have the cabinet run off of batteries in order to make it portable, so he used old mobile phone batteries along with a cleverly-designed charging circuit. So, when the power supply is connected to +5V, the batteries charge up, and when that power is removed, an ATtiny85 microcontroller provides 5V of power to the cabinet using the mobile phone batteries.

Sprite even added a marquee to the MAME cabinet, which is a tiny 128×32 white OLED display, in this case. The display will show the logo of the game currently being played on the cabinet. Everything in the system is set up to be completely seamless when switching between games, and it automatically re-configures the controls and marquee when switching to a new game.

While this may not be a permanent and dedicated arcade solution for most gamers, the ingenuity behind this tiny Raspberry Pi-powered MAME cabinet is one of coolest mods we’ve seen recently, bar none. The video above shows Sprite himself testing out the machine by playing some Bubble Bobble and then switching to Nemesis later on.

PAX gaming convention goes international in 2013

As the Penny Arcade Expo continues to grow exponentially each time it takes place in a collection of hot arenas throughout the USA, PAX Australia 2013 was announced on the first day of the iteration known as PAX Prime 2012. It was announced during a question and answer session held by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the original authors of the Penny Arcade web-based media beast. This convention takes everything that is the webcomic and column of Penny Arcade and places it in the real world with not just real-world video games, but nerd rappers, developers, and games of all times as well.

Penny Arcade Expo has been appearing every single year since its first event back in 2004. Back then, the creators of the Penny Arcade hopes to turn it into an annual event – and boy did they ever! PAX became such a popular event that by the time 2010 rolled around, they were able to split it into two events. In 2011, three events appeared: PAX East, Prime, and Dev – for developers specifically. In 2012 we’ve seen PAX East and Prime appear once more, and PAX Australia will be the first time the convention exists outside the United States.

Holkins and Krahulik have also reportedly expressed interest in continuing beyond the adventure island that is Australia and heading back up to Europe where a UK-based PAX might take place. Dates and actual solid plans have not yet been revealed – and perhaps haven’t been actually planned as of yet. Venture Beat reports that the creators of Penny Arcade have noted that they “want to go there” – of course this means they definitely, certainly, very well might do so.

PAX East 2012 appeared this year across April 6-8 and went big at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. According to the Boston Herald, Boston has agreed and committed with the administrators of the convention that it’ll be the home of PAX East for a further 10 years. PAX Prime has also just occurred, taking place between August 31st and September 2nd, and as it has been with essentially all of the iterations of the conventions, the limited edition tickets for entry were sold out within hours. Street Fighter coming to Android in 2012

It’s finally time for one of the most epic fighting games ever to grace the halls of the console era to make its way to the mobile platform – Street Fighter IV HD will be appearing on Android devices inside 2012 courtesy of a special introduction contest held by Capcom and LG. What this introduction will consist of is a Global Championship for ultimate fighting supremacy played on the same in question and on the Google mobile operating system in the form of the AT&T carried LG Nitro HD inside the USA and the LG Optimus LTE in Japan and Korea. Will you enter the fight and see yourself murdering the competition for fame and fortune come January?

While there is something like $21,000 USD up for grabs for the contest here in the United States, the most important thing to the general public is that the game will be released for the Android platform at some point during or after the contest played early next year. This game will be optimized for 720p resolution displays and devices running at least dual-core processors under the hood. Street Fighter IV HD will be available exclusively on the LG Nitro HD at first, but given that there’s not been basically ANY game on Android that’s stuck with one device exclusively in the past, we’re guessing the release will expand inside the first half of the year.

To qualify for the tournament, if that’s your sort of deal, you’ll have to head on over to the sign-up sheet and get your early stretches in now. This contest starts in January of 2012 and is bound to be as epic as a video game tournament can be. The original Street Fighter IV HD came out several years ago for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and since we’ve got no previews for the Android version as of yet, have a look at that for a mild taste of what we’ll see soon:

Tobii EyeAsteroids arcade game has no joystick, uses eye control

If you were an old school gamer, I would wager that back in the day you spent many a quarter playing Asteroids at the arcade. A company we have talked about in the past called Tobii has a new game that reminds me of the classic Asteroids game that is called Tobii EyeAsteroids. Tobii has in the past offered up a laptop that can be controlled by the eyes only. It has also shown off a computer accessory called PCEye that adds eye tracking to your monitor.

The new arcade game is a full size stand up cabinet meant for arcades rather than a home. Each of the games is priced at $15,000 and there are only 50 available. Looking at the game there are no controls, everything is controlled using the eyes. The goal is to keep asteroids from hitting the Earth.

Players claim that the lag between the decision to target an asteroid said the came firing on the asteroid is virtually non-existent. The first of the games will be installed in Dave & Buster’s Times Square in NYC. It will be there for two weeks and then head to London. It will also be on display at CES.

Ms. Splosion Man Releasing Early on July 13th!

Joy un-2 the new year! We’re getting Ms. Splosion Man earlier than we expected! This game which we’ve scantly spoken of since back in December was originally slated for sometime in the Fall of 2011. Now we’ve got word that it’s coming out in July – what a winner! This game, as it was originally noted to be, will come out on Xbox 360′s Xbox Live Arcade and is the direct sequel to the 2009 classic Splosion Man – get ready to Splode!

What you’ve got here is a game where you’re supposed to free Splosion Man from the grips of the scientists at Big Science. They’re utterly enamored with the idea of stopping him from sploding all of their machinery, so they’ve trapped him in the box. Of course once they started to celebrate their victory over splosions, they began to drink some bubbly – and what do you know? Chaos ensued. The birth of Ms. Splosion man had happened and the Splosion Man we all know and love was made in a lady version – complete with lipstick and a bow.

Now we’ve got word that this magical game will be coming out on the 13th of July with revamped network support, fifty levels for both single player and multiplayer, and lots and lots of colors! New gameplay mechanics, a whole new collection of boxes, new music, and of course a whole pack of humor and unlockable content. This content consists of behind-the-scenes videos of the game’s creation, a bit that the creators are quite proud of.

Splosion Man and feel like it is our best game to date. We are very excited to launch it this
summer on XBLA,” says Twisted Pixel CEO, Mike Wilford.

Small Massachusetts town votes to keep arcade games illegal

I have heard of some strange laws on the books in many towns around the country that have been there for years and just haven’t been removed. A little town in Massachusetts called Marshfield has had a law on the books that bans any coin operated arcade game for 29 years. It would have been a much bigger deal back in the 80′s than it is today. Apparently, home video games are fine in the town.

Marshfield is a town of 4,297 residents and it is about 25 miles southeast of Boston. The recent vote on whether to drop the ban was 655 for and 554 against keeping the ban in place. The supporters of the ban say the games are a nuisance and they feel that the video games are bad for kids. I am surprised they haven’t tried to vote video games in the home illegal. A movie about this town could be a cross between Footloose and Tron.

The last time the citizens were able to vote to continue or lift the ban was in 1994. At the time, the people that voted to keep the ban feared that allowing games in would open the door to adult entertainment. Arcades and strippers are commonly found together after all. NOT. Apparently, the ban has been pushed as far as the state attorney general and superior court and the Mass. Supreme court and the right to ban the games was upheld.

iPad Arcade Cabinet “iCade” By Ion Audio To Bring Retro Fun In May

Here’s a neat little accessory to turn your Apple iPad into a retro mini arcade machine. Ion Audio first showed off this iPad arcade cabinet called the iCade at CES earlier this year but had not confirmed a date of availability. Today, the accessory just passed through the FCC signaling an on time launch for May 31. Watch the video demo after the cut.

The iCade is designed to sit on top of your table and has an arcade style joystick with six numbered buttons and two “enter” blue buttons. You simply slide your iPad into the front of the iCade and connect them via Bluetooth to start playing your favorite classic arcade games.

Well, you do have to go and download the games, which are thankfully free, from Apple’s App Store. The Atari Greatest Hits app is configured to work with the iCade and you can download additional games via the app.

However, the iCade relies on 2 AA batteries, which can get gobbled up rather quickly as you play hours on end of Space Invaders. It would be nice if there was a plug-in or rechargeable option. But nonetheless, a fun little accessory to show off in your geek lair if you have an extra $100 sitting around.

DIY pinball machine uses dual LCDs

When I was a kid, we had an old school arcade pinball machine that my dad picked up somewhere. We played that thing all the time and I remember it has huge and crazy noisy when you played. If you want a pinball machine in your house but you want one that takes up less space than the real thing this DIY machine might be perfect for you.

A geek going by tbarklay has constructed his own digital pinball machine using two LCD monitors, a computer, and an old PC table. The dude even posted the instructions for building your own version on Instructables. I really like the name he gave it – Pintendo.

The geek says you need a PC with at least 1GB of RAM, but 2GB is better. A decent graphics card with dual output capability and a dual-core processor are ideal inside the computer running the show. The software uses dual cores and XP makes the best OS for the thing. The software it runs is Visual Pinball and hyperpin makes it playable. The playing field the dude uses is a 24-inch screen and a 19-inch is used for the back glass. He also rigged up his own buttons for controls.

Group Building Own Arcade Cabinets For PAX East

Game group The Behemoth is constructing custom arcade cabinets running their own developed games and will present them at Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East 2011 in Boston. The group will be bringing five arcade cabinets with them to the event, four of them will be running the groups newest build of BattleBlock Theatre and the fifth one will run the original four player Castle Crashers.

The group built an arcade cabinet for PAX 2010 running Castle Crashers and decided to expand on the concept and build a few more for the upcoming expo. BattleBlock Theatre will run off an Xbox 360 and the Castle Crashers arcade cabinet will be running off a PS3. Each cabinet will sport an additional display that comes out of the back of the machine via remote, so that the crowd can watch the action as well.

The group posted up some timeline photos of the cabinets progress and you can definitely see the amount of effort placed into each one. If you’re in the Boston area from March 11th to the 13th go check out PAX East.

X-Men Arcade for Xbox 360 Released December 15

Konami has confirmed with Eurogamer today the release dates of the highly anticipated return of the classic arcade game, this time in home-version form. For the Xbox 360 version, an exclusive release date of December 15th, that’s next Wednesday! Then for the Playstation 3 version, TWO MONTHS AFTER. What in the world? That is just crazy talk. That puts it in February of 2011, prices on either version are not yet confirmed. Backbone Entertainment studio is leading the production of this game, so it should run fabulously.

For those of you that don’t remember (or weren’t alive yet?) this is a game that basically used to be in every single arcade in the world, a giant machine with six joysticks and sets of buttons allowing you and your friends to concurrently control Cyclops, Colossus, Dazzler, Nightcrawler, Storm and Wolverine. The game appears to be basically identical to the original arcade release, containing all the dastardly villains as bosses: Pyro, Blob, Wendigo, Mystique, White Queen, Juggernaught and Magneto.

This game was part of a multiplayer trend almost two decades ago that also included games like The Simpsons, and Ninja Turtles in Time, basically all of which were completely amazing games – just so long as you were actually in the arcade playing them.

Will this particular oldie stay strong on consoles? We’ll see.

Stern unveils limited edition version of Avatar pinball game

If you happen across an old school arcade in a mall today odds are you will run across some cool pinball machines that are based on some of the films that hit theaters recently. One of the companies that make these really cool pinball machines is Stern. Stern makes some version for your home too.

The latest of the limited edition Stern pinball machines to celebrate recent blockbusters is the Avatar machine and the thing is awesome. The special edition machine takes you to a Pandora where a shiny metal ball will bash anything in its path. All of the queues from the film integrated into the machine are very impressive I really like the walking robot mech and the Sully character lying in the control bed for his avatar.

Stern is building only 250 of these things and each of the limited edition machines will have a special plaque and a certificate of authenticity. Each of them will sell for a whopping $5,499. You can see the machine in more detail on the video below.

iPad Used in a Real Working Arcade Unit

The iPad is a tablet. And while Apple would have you convinced that it’s a magical and revolutionary piece of technology, we’re more convinced of its magical aspects when we see dangerously clever people like this create wonderfully amazing items such as this working arcade unit. Unlike others before it, this version is completely functional, and you’re able to use the physical controls to manipulate what’s on the screen.

Thanks to the fine folks over at FREEKADE, we’ve seen the first glimpse of a real, working arcade unit with an iPad shoved inside for good measure. And while the model from ThinkGeek may have looked more aesthetically pleasing, that model didn’t work — and was only being planned to be a real thing, eventually. This model, while plain and simple, actually makes your iPad a functioning arcade unit.

As the description in the YouTube video explains, this isn’t a VNC-type client; everything is working locally on the iPad. “It’s a real working machine using arcade controls…” Simply put, you’ll be able to have your own little arcade in your bedroom, or living room, to make sure that you get that much-needed dosage of nostalgia every day. Right now, it’s just a working prototype, but we’re hoping that we get to see some final builds here soon enough. Video is below, so feast your eyes.
