Amazon app kicked from Google Play

Amazon app kicked from Google Play

The app you may have used for the past several years to access Amazon (outside of your web browser) has been axed from Google Play's app store. As was found earlier this year, Amazon updated their app to include app and game purchases and downloads - effectively making their app an app store within an app store. Google did not like that, and since have brought up a bit of a rule tweak on what should have otherwise banned the sales of apps within apps listed on Google Play.

Microsoft offers up more apps for iOS, Android users

Microsoft offers up more apps for iOS, Android users

With the changeover to Satya Nadella as CEO, Microsoft is shifting (pivoting, if you watch 'Silicon Valley') their structure. Instead of a stodgy PC OS maker, Microsoft is embracing mobile as best they can. After missing the boat with their failed OS attempts ahead of the new-look Windows Phones, losing more ground than they can likely make up to Apple and Android, Microsoft is instead supporting the platforms with services. To hit home even further they aren’t interested in hardware sales, Microsoft is making more Windows apps available for iOS and Android.

Blackphone PrivatOS gets “Spaces” sandbox, own app store

Blackphone PrivatOS gets “Spaces” sandbox, own app store

They say that a chain is only as strong as the weakest link and sometimes in the case of operating systems, that weakest link is in the apps ecosystem. That is why Blackphone will be updating its Android-based security and privacy hardened PrivatOS with two new features that tries to mitigate the adverse effects of third-party applications. With Spaces, PrivatOS can keep personal files and apps personal, away from sensitive enterprise content. And its own app store ensures that only equally secure apps actually get installed.

Spotify gives devs mobile app store blessing

Spotify gives devs mobile app store blessing

Spotify is warming up to third-party developers, dropping its limits on how apps built using its mobile SDKs can be distributed and even monetized. The news means that Android and iOS coders can now release their wares through Google Play and the App Store, while also supporting things like embedded advertising, subscriptions, and more. Still, it's not quite a free-for-all, and exactly what you can do depends on how exactly you use Spotify's catalog.

And buyers will also have something to show for their pledge, with exclusive in-app content and perks to mark the occasion.

Apple changed ‘Free’ to ‘Get’, but things haven’t changed

Apple changed ‘Free’ to ‘Get’, but things haven’t changed

If you head into the App Store for either iOS or OS X (Mac App Store, obviously), you might notice a slight change. If you go to download an app, there is no longer a “Free” option. Now, you’ll either be presented with a price, or “Get”. The change is causing a bit of confusion with some, but it shouldn’t. Apps are still free, unless they cost something. Or will cost something later. Or might cost something at some point. You know what, we’re complicating this. Let’s talk it out.

Apple adds China UnionPay to its list of partners

Apple adds China UnionPay to its list of partners

Continuing its courtship of the Chinese market, Apple has just announced that its App Store has just added UnionPay as a payment option in the region. Being the only domestic bank card network in China, UnionPay's presence will make it much easier for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users to get their app fix, no matter their actual credit card. This also makes it easier for them to get hooked into the app-buying fever, which could very well boost China's position as Apple's second largest app consumer.

Amazon App Store now on Google Play (sort of)

Amazon App Store now on Google Play (sort of)

Google might not be pleased when they realize the implications of Amazon's newest app update. Instead of Amazon relying on you to head to their webpage to download the Amazon App Store app, you've only to download the Amazon App from Google Play. The big deal here is not that Google forbids apps outside their own store - they certainly do not. The big deal here is App Updates. Google forbids that apps that come from the Google Play app store be updated through any other means than the Google Play app store itself.
