As the name suggests, InAir is streamed over Wi-Fi via AirPlay for all iOS devices and computers through iTunes. The speakers have an excellent range across the board, even on the noisy showroom floor. It’s made out of brushed metal with plastic covering the sides. The build quality looked very decent, but couldn’t compare to the LIVE 5000 version.

The LIVE 5000 looks very similar, but delivers an entirely different experience. Different doesn’t always mean better, but in this case it does. The LIVE doesn’t limit its user to a single platform, as it supports iOS, Android, and over PC/Mac via their desktop LIVE controller. It also features streaming services such as Pandora, SiriusXM, TuneIn, and Rhapsody. They expect even more streaming applications available before launch.

We should see both speakers just before summer, but hopefully we’ll get to review one before then. They sounded great and the applications had fluid user interfaces.

An eye-raising partnership, to say the least, since Altec Lansing has generally been consumer-facing, and ACS, not at all. Nevertheless, according to Altec Lansing, these will be hand-crafted, armature-driver based in-ear-monitors that will aim to slake the high-fidelity thirst of audio enthusiasts and professionals alike.

The new Custom Series in-ear monitors are custom handcrafted from “advanced, medical-grade silicone that is extremely soft”. The silicone will naturally adapt to a listener’s body temperature, and allow it to form a flexible yet uniform seal that guarantees comfort for long listening durations and also passively isolates noise up to -27db. All three new models have a impressive frequency response range of 16Hz ~ 20KHz, which will will insure the highest fidelity and quality out of any audio experience, be it music, movies, games, or sound engineering.

Availability for the Altec Lansing by ACS Custom Series In-Ear Monitors begins this month (November). Pricing goes like this; the triple-driver armature A3 will be $999.95, while the A2 (dual driver) and A1 (single-driver) models will have a suggested retail price of $749.95 and $499.95, respectively. So go ahead and schedule that appointment with your audiologist, since these custom monitors are going to start selling very, very soon. And it’ll be interesting to see how these stack up against the increasingly popular Beats by Dr. Dre line, especially since Beats is working with smartphone maker HTC now.

Altec Lansing has been making audio gear for a long time and the company has rolled out new earphones that it is aiming at the audiophile looking for high quality sound. The earphones are the Muzx Ultra MZX606. The earphones are engineered for looks, comfort and performance.

Altec Lansing promises that the earphones deliver a balanced and rich signal that leaves the music you hear just as it was recorded. The headphones are compatible with the iPod, iPhone, iPad, MP3 player, and computers as well as other devices. The frequency range they support is broad at 20Hz to 20kHz.

The bass promises to be crisp but not overwhelming and the Muzx Ultra earphones have 26dB of noise isolation. That is enough sound filtering to block things like traffic and engine noise. The earphones also have an inline remote control that works with the iPhone and iPods and a mic built-in for making and receiving phone calls. The cable is 46-inches long and the earphones include an 8-piece fitting kit and a carry case. Pricing for the MZX606 earphones is $99.95 and the ship date is set for October.

Altec Lansing were out last night to preview their latest iPod speaker dock, the Octiv Duo, and it’s designed for those households with more than one iPod or iPhone to rejuice. The horn-shaped dock can not only recharge both devices simultaneously, but also shuffle tunes stored on each (using the free Music Mix app) to put an end to “no, my playlist next” arguments.

There’s also a cute circular remote control that stows safely at the back of the dock, a USB port for recharging a third device – whether Apple or otherwise – and Altec Lansing are offering another app called Alarm Rock which turns the Octiv Duo into an alarm clock. As for the audio itself, the Octiv Duo gets a pair of two inch neodymium drives; it wasn’t exactly the loudest or most acoustically pleasing speaker dock we’ve ever heard, but for a kitchen or desk it’s ideal.

One thing we’d like to have seen is a pass-through sync port, allowing you to hook up the speaker dock to iTunes and put new media on as they recharge. You do get a 3.5mm aux-input for non-Apple PMPs, however. It’ll be available soon, priced at $99.95.

Every time we look around there are one or two new iPhone and iPod docks being tossed onto the market. Some folks want a big dock with lots of power and features and others want a compact dock that takes up little space. The folks liking compact docks may be interested in the new Altec Lansing Octiv Mini Multifunction Audio Dock.

The little dock works with both the iPhone and most dockable iPod models. The thing has an associated app called the Alarm Rock app that is on the iPod and iPhone that lets the dock be used as a fully featured alarm clock. With the app, the iPhone or iPod touch displays the time along with a big snooze button and you can wake to your music.

The dock has a cool angled design and uses one 3-inch full range-driver. The cabinet measures 4.5″ W x 4″ D x 3.8″ H. Like most docks, the Octiv Mini charges your docked device while you listen. Orders are being taken now for the dock at $59.95 with free shipping directly from Altec Lansing.

There’s also a nifty little remote with both a clip-fastener and a slot-in nook on the boombox itself, plus grab-handles and the ability to run for 30 hours from eight D-sized batteries. Altec Lansing have thrown in “Fierce bass” and a 7-band graphic equalizer, together with a cellphone mode which automatically pauses the music should a call on your iPhone come in.

We’re not feeling the style, which strikes us a little too “try hard”, but if you’re looking for a portable speaker system with more inputs than sense, then the MIX Boombox may fit the bill. It’s on sale now, priced at $299.95.

Altec’s FX3022 features twin desktop speakers with 25 watts RMS power handling and has auxiliary input jack and controls built right in. The down-firing 4-inch subwoofer is mounted at the bottom of the cylinder-shaped speaker, each channel has dedicate deep bass response range of 40hz-200hz in 4 ohms driven. While the 1.5-inch full range woofer handles the rest of frequency spectrum, for up to 16khz, at 12 ohm impedance.

Altec’s engineer insists that the presence of the dual-woofer, entitles a 2.2 channel-design for the identity of their Expressionist Bass. Available now, you can get the Altec Lansing kitchen appliance at Amazon for $115

HP have announced two new multimedia Pavilion notebooks, the HDX16 and HDX18. Both have 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 processors, NVIDIA GeForce 512MB graphics and optional Blu-ray, together with HP’s unique “imprint” casing finish. Inprint uses a combination of different colors, vacuum metalized and printed, which are then injected with resin to make durable, wear-resistant panels. The HDX16 has a 16-inch display and the HDX18 an 18.4-inch display; both are 16:9 aspect, the smaller a choice of 720- or 1,080 resolution while the larger is full 1080p HD. Each has flush-fitting glass and 300nits dual-lamp illumination.

HP have again enlisted Altec Lansing to provide the audio systems, with both have stereo speakers and the larger HDX18 adding a subwoofer to the mixture. Onboard Dolby home theater software means either can act as the source in a full media setup, aided by the built-in HD TV tuners.

The HDX18 has dual hard-drives, giving up to a combined 640GB of storage, while the HDX16 has up to 320GB; both laptops use HP’s Protect Smart 3D accelerometer system to monitor for drops or bumps and automatically park the drive heads. Dual headphone sockets are standard, there’s also a “chat-tuned” webcam for which HP purposefully specified a VGA sensor (rather than, say, a 1.3-megapixel one) capable of improved low-light performance and 24fps. Ports include a dual-purpose USB/eSATA, HDMI and Firewire, while the touchpad also has an on-off button for use with an external mouse.

Both the HDX16 and HDX18 will begin shipping this month, priced from $1,299 and $1,549 respectively.

Altec Lansing have unveiled a number of new audio systems, including a high-quality portable speaker dock for the iPhone 3G, a combination speaker dock, FM radio and clock (with color changing mood light), and a desktop speaker system with integrated dual subwoofers. The inMotion MAX Portable Digital Music System uses the company’s proprietary ESS technology with XdB bass-enhancement and twin stereo speakers. It’s fully WiFi and cellphone shielded, so can be used with the iPhone 3G (or original iPhone) without needing to flip off the phone functionality. Music is automatically paused if the phone rings.

The inMotion MAX also has a digital FM radio, high-contrast LCD capable of showing RDS data, and touch-sensitive buttons. It’s rechargeable battery is apparently good for 3.5hrs; we’ll be reviewing the speaker dock over the next few weeks, and letting you know exactly how well it performs.

As for the inMotion Moondance GLOW, the size is a little smaller than the MAX but it adds a multicolor LED lighting system. Twin 3-inch speakers provide the sound – whether from an iPod, another PMP or the integrated FM radio – and while the system isn’t quite as powerful as the MAX it still holds its own for the bedroom use Altec Lansing intend. Two remotes are supplied, a standard and a “wireless snooze” control; Altec Lansing assured us that even if you launch the wireless snooze across the room in a fit of sleep-deprived hatred, it’ll still work.

Finally, what Altec Lansing are calling “the industry’s first 2.2 desktop speaker system”, the Expressionist BASS. Unlike traditional 2.1 systems, which use twin speakers for treble and mid frequencies and a separate subwoofer unit, the Expressionist BASS integrates two smaller 4-inch subwoofers into each desktop speaker. The result is a more compact, less wire-tangled setup, with sound quality that in our demonstration sounded just as good as an independent sub.

The Altec Lansing inMotion MAX (iMT702) and Moondance GLOW (iM402) systems will be available in October 2008, priced at $199.95 and $179.95 respectively. The Expressionist BASS system will have a MRSP of $129.95, again launching in October.

One of the problems with getting most of your news in an aggregator is that when a site updates its look you sometimes never know about it – you’ve streamlined the process of reading, but missed out on some of the eye-candy on the way. Well, one of the sites on my blogroll, Gadgetell, turned one year old on the 9th October and, perhaps feeling the cruel onset of time, has relaunched and is sporting a great new design… perhaps even more excitingly, they’re running a prize give-away every week until they run out of cool stuff. I can only assume that this means the contest will finish before they start handing out the office sink and their bedroom linen.

As of writing, the prize is an Altec Lansing iM7 iPod speaker dock, worth $249.99, and all you have to do is leave them a comment on the competition thread wishing them a Happy Birthday.

Love the new look, guys, and a belated Happy Birthday!

If you just read Rue’s review of the SanDisk Sansa e280, you’re probably wondering if there are or will be any accessories available for it. You can rest assure that Altec Lansing has partnered with SanDisk to create a lineup of accessories made for Sansa music players. The inMotion iM510 is a black docking speaker system that is every bit as sexy as the company’s Made for iPod lineup. It’s sexy, slim, dock, sync and charge the Sansa product line for less $119.95, available the week of October 9, 2006.

I had an opportunity to spend a brief moment with the inMotion at the Holiday Spectacular event in NYC. All I can say is if you’re the owner of a Sansa, the inMotion will make a perfect mate for it. More pictures after the jump.

Make sure to visit SlashGear.com early next week for a review of the inMotion iM510.
