Apple AirPlay And Thunderbolt Priced Too High For Widespread Support

It seems like Apple may be pricing itself into a corner, at least with its proprietary AirPlay and Thunderbolt technologies. Reports today revealed that Apple's licensing fees for the two technologies are prohibitively expensive. One of the cooler things that came out of WWDC 2011 is the Airplay mirroring of gaming content from iOS devices like the iPad 2. Pioneer Elite VSX receivers pack AirPlay, DLNA streaming, more

Pioneer has revealed its latest batch of Elite receivers, throwing in Apple AirPlay support along with the company's own Air Jam collaborative playlist system, which allows multiple devices to contribute tracks to a single playlist. The Pioneer VSX-40, VSX-50, VSX-51, VSX-52 and VSX-53 offer seven channels of up to 110W each, have DLNA streaming media support (on all but the VSX-40), and support external zones for multi-room playback. Sonos Controller for Android released; Sonos v3.4 adds AirPlay

Sonos has released its Sonos Controller for Android app, allowing users of Android 2.1 or higher smartphones or tablets to remotely control their multi-room audio systems without paying for a separate remote. Meanwhile, the company has also added Apple AirPlay support in Sonos firmware v3.4, allowing an AirPort Express to be plugged into a Sonos device's aux-in input and stream from it around the home. Apple’s AirPlay private key crack opens door to unofficial streaming

Apple's AirPlay system is supposed to be another example of the company charging manufacturers for access to its exclusive club, but some recent hacking has opened the streaming system for anybody interested. Developer James Laird reverse-engineered the private key Apple uses in the AirPort Express, and used it to cook up an emulator app called SharePort. iOS 4.3 due March 11 for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch

Apple has officially announced iOS 4.3, which will ship pre-loaded on the iPad 2 and be available as a free download for existing iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM) and 3rd/4th-Gen iPod touch owners from Friday, March 11.
