Adobe has announced the pricing for its new Creative Cloud service that lets you use the company’s popular Creative Suite software via the cloud and makes it easy to sync and share content. The service was first announced last October and now it has been priced at $50 per month with a one-year contract.

The Creative Cloud offers access to the latest version of Creative Suite software, Lightroom 4, Muse, Edge, touch applications, and 20GB of cloud storage. Although $50 a month seems steep, it may still be more desirable to some than purchasing the full license for the Creative Suite, which runs between $1,300 and $2,600.

An advantage to using the Creative Cloud is that you will get the latest software updates right away, which may appeal to high-end users that tend to be early adopters. The 20GB of cloud storage plus syncing and sharing options also offer advantages over the traditional software route.

The shift towards the cloud-based platform will help Adobe curb the piracy issues it faces with its top-tier software. Adobe plans to sell a more secure version of the Creative Cloud to business users for $70 per month.

Having announced that its Flash Player mobile plans were over back in November, Adobe has confirmed that Chrome for Android does indeed arrive too late for a plugin of its own. That’s despite Android 4.0 already having Flash Player support in the native browser.

Flash Player for ICS was released near the end of 2011, Adobe’s final mobile flourish before it turned its attentions to HTML5. The decision to end Flash Player development for mobile devices followed long-standing criticism of the technology, most notably from Apple founder Steve Jobs, though the proliferation of Flash content online meant that for many users it was a necessary evil.

For now, Chrome for Android is only available if you’re on 4.0, meaning it’s a small percentage – around 1-percent, in fact – who get to play with the new app. If you’re interested in porting the browser to earlier versions of Android, meanwhile, developer Al Sutton points to the direct tarball download for your tinkering delectation.

Spend-friendly tableteers splash out significantly more on online purchases than their smartphone and desktop/notebook counterparts, according to new research, with those doing their holiday 2011 shopping on an iPad or other slate spending 21-percent more on average than those using a traditional computer. In fact, tablet shoppers spend 54-percent more than smartphone shoppers, according to a new Adobe Digital Marketing Insights report, and are almost three times more likely to buy products and services.

Motivation to buy is still stronger for desktop and notebook users, though those on tablets are apparently “nearly as likely” to purchase.

Adobe tracked visits to around 150 of the top US retailers, the company’s stats division says, looking at browsing data from 16.2bn anonymous visits. Both the 2011 holiday season and 2011 as a whole were examined, with tablet use quadrupling over the course of the year, while smartphone shopping use doubled and traditional shopping – though still far ahead – fell to 90-percent of shopping visits per device.

The increased likelihood of tablet-browsing shoppers to spend money isn’t just because they’re using a slate, of course. The study also points out that the type of person to buy a tablet – predominantly male, with a greater-than-average household income – is also the sort that would spend more money anyway. Still, the end conclusion, that retailers and service providers should tailor their sites to suit traditional, phone and tablet browsing individually, holds true.

The long vacant spot as the head of the Apple’s iAd mobile advertising division has finally been filled. According to Bloomberg’s Adam Satariano, Apple has scooped up Adobe exec Todd Teresi for the position. Teresi was a VP and general manager of Adobe’s Media Solutions division for the past nine months.

Prior to Adobe, Teresi served as the Chief Revenue Officer for Quantcast and, still earlier, he was a senior VP at Yahoo. He will now take the position as head of Apple’s iAd division, which has been without a leader since Andy Miller left the post back in August of last year. Miller left to join venture capital firm Highland Capital.

The iAd platform has been struggling for the past year. Despite launching as a high-end marketing option with million-dollar-buy-ins, Apple has had to cut prices to generate more interest. The reluctance of developers may have to do with the platforms lock-in to iOS, whereas other advertising options such as Google’s AdMob are cross-platform. Apple’s insistence on controlling development of the ads itself also didn’t help.

We knew that Adobe was on track to roll out Adobe Flash support for Android 4.0 (and in particular, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus) before the end of this year but, at that time, we didn’t know the exact month, whether it’d be either November or December. Now, fast forwarding to today, Adobe has just tied up a couple loose ends and confirmed that Adobe Flash Player 11.1 and Adobe AIR 3.1 will both be heading to the Galaxy Nexus (and thus Android 4.0) at some point next month in December.

We think that the timing couldn’t be more perfect for those of you that live stateside and just can’t wait to get your hands on Verizon’s sleek new 4G LTE-powered Galaxy Nexus smartphone, reviewed by us here. Also, we want to remind you this is the last version of Flash that will be headed to Android after Adobe announced that it would be completely ditching the platform for Android and other mobile operating systems.

What about other devices besides the Galaxy Nexus? Well, that’s entirely up to the decision of the other OEM companies. Most will probably continue to provide support for future smartphone models, but more significant advances in Flash and Adobe AIR for Android are pretty much finished. But for the Galaxy Nexus hopefuls out there, just be glad you’re getting a last and final update before the last final croak of the mobile flash platform. Rest in peace, mobile Flash, you’ve had a good run on some great smartphones.

Adobe will deliver a version of Flash Player mobile for Android 4.0 by the end of the year, the company has confirmed, meaning smartphones like the Galaxy Nexus will be able to play Flash games and animations in the browser. Flash Player’s current incompatibility with Ice Cream Sandwich was spotted shortly after the Galaxy Nexus’ launch, with Google only saying that “it expected” Adobe to release an updated version. However, Adobe also confirmed to Pocket-lint that this new version will be its last for the platform.

“Adobe will release one more version of the Flash Player for mobile browsing, which will provide support for Android 4.0, and one more release of the Flash Linux Porting Kit – both expected to be released before the end of this year” a company spokesperson revealed. Beyond that, any further releases will be nothing more than “critical bug fixes and security updates” with the expectation that HTML5 will become the dominant mobile standard instead.

Adobe announced that mobile Flash had been flushed earlier this month, after several years of arguments over whether the technology – which has been accused of making devices run slowly and introducing instabilities – had a place on portable devices. Apple was perhaps Flash’s most vocal critic, with Steve Jobs memorably penning a harsh open letter explaining why, exactly, the iPhone, iPad and other iOS devices didn’t support the technology.

However, other manufacturers have proved less willing to release mobile Flash, with RIM already announcing that it would take up the baton of development for its PlayBook tablet. Google is unlikely to take a similar strategy, however, having already thrown much of its weight behind HTML5. Still, as the web catches up, this final Flash Player release for Ice Cream Sandwich should tide owners over until HTML5 reaches saturation point.

If you lucky owners of the Galaxy Nexus in these first days of its release complete with the first iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich, you’ll notice that you do not have Adobe Flash Player installed, nor do you have access to a download on the Android Market – Google has just confirmed with us that this is normal and that Flash support will only come once Adobe makes the call to update the mobile version for Android 4.0. You currently will not have the ability to load either a new version or one of the older versions of Flash Player for Ice Cream Sandwich until Adobe makes the call to update their app to be compatible with this newest version of Android. Don’t get too frazzled quite yet though, that’s not the whole story.

Those of you about to have a heart attack over this would do well to note that it was inevitable as Adobe announced that they’d be axing the mobile version of Flash in favor of HTML5 earlier this month. Then if you’ll go ahead and read what Google has let us know, you’ll see that the story isn’t necessarily completely over for Adobe’s mobile version of Flash. Even though the app and support for Flash will be ending relatively soon, Google had the following to say:

“Flash hasn’t been released for ICS yet so as far as we know, Adobe will support Flash for ICS.” – Google

Have a peek at the gallery below to see several signs that Adobe Flash Player isn’t active in Ice Cream Sandwich, and note that these screenshots are taken on the non-Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus. You can see the rest of our Galaxy Nexus coverage by heading to our giant and ever-expending [Galaxy Nexus Portal] while the same situation is true for Android 4.0 in our [Ice Cream Sandwich portal].

And of course above all – don’t forget to check our our full reviews of the OS and the device separately this weekend here on SlashGear!

Adobe has released its Touch Apps suite of five-strong graphics packages intended for Android tablets, each priced at $9.99 in the Android Market. The apps – based on functionality from Adobe’s Creative Suite – were announced last month, and include Photoshop Touch for image tweaking, Adobe Ideas for sketching, and Adobe Proto, for prototyping mobile apps and websites. Meanwhile, the company has confirmed that iOS versions are in the pipeline, and has launched a new cloud-based collaboration system.

Adobe Collage can be used to create moodboards, useful when planning a project, while Adobe Debut is intended to make sharing and reviewing work more straightforward. Finally, Adobe Kuler offers in-depth exploration of color themes.

All five integrate with Adobe Creative Cloud, the company’s web-based file viewing, sharing and transfer system. Working with both the Touch Apps and Adobe’s desktop software, Creative Cloud allows tableteers to open native Photoshop and other files, edit them while on the move, and then return to working on them when they’re back at their desk, without having to manually sync or export along the way.

Adobe Ideas is already available on iOS, and Adobe expects the remaining four apps to make the jump early next year. The company will also announce paid membership options for Creative Cloud, among other things, in the first half of 2012.

Adobe isn’t just axing Flash Player for Mobile, but refocusing its approach toward smart TV as well, pushing native apps rather than Flash compatibility. Although the company will continue to support existing licensees of its Open Screen Project, an Adobe spokesperson told GigaOM, it now believes “the right approach to deliver content on televisions is through applications, not a web browsing experience.” Meanwhile, RIM has confirmed that it will independently develop Flash for the BlackBerry PlayBook, telling AllThingsD that it has licensed Adobe’s source code.

Of course, just because it doesn’t believe Flash is best for connected TVs, doesn’t mean the company is leaving the segment entirely to rivals. Instead, it will push Adobe AIR apps as part of its recently announced smart TV port, with developers already using the technology to create software for Samsung sets. AIR apps can also be used on mobile devices and on the desktop, but are standalone code rather than living in the browser.

RIM’s challenge, meanwhile, is to live up to its heavy Flash focused advertising for the PlayBook, with support for the standard being a key part of the Canadian company’s value proposition versus the iPad and Android slates. The plan is to take up independent development of Flash for the PlayBook, though RIM will also look to HTML5 for future BBX phones and tablets.

“As an Adobe source code licensee, we will continue to work on and release our own implementations. RIM remains committed to delivering an uncompromised Web browsing experience to our customers, including native support for Adobe Flash Player on our BlackBerry PlayBook tablet (similar to a desktop PC browser), as well as HTML5 support on both our BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook browsers” RIM statement

Adobe has been criticized for its Flash mobile decision – and the length of time it took the company to settle on a strategy – by former Flash Lite and Flash Mobile lead Calos Icaza.

Today there was a rather important announcement made by Adobe regarding the amount of Flash that’ll be found on mobile devices in the future: zero – and now that the public and the former leaders of Adobe have gotten full wind, the results aren’t good. Of course it’s been a point of contention whether or not flash should be on mobile devices for just about as long as there’s been a concept of a smartphone, so the markets were bound to react to any sort of big change in the waters here in this situation, and it appears that Adobe really couldn’t have gotten much worse of a reaction from stockholders.

In addition to the generally negative set of comments found around the web today, former Adobe executive Calos Icaza let the world know through Read Write Web’s Dan Rowinski that he’d been pushing for Adobe to focus on flash for touchscreen displays since all the way back in 1997, and is now feeling a bit like he had the right idea. The situation back then eventually lead to him leaving the company, and now he’s talking up how back then even though half the mobile Flash team at Adobe carried the Apple iPhone in 2007, they said it was a niche. Three years later and flash is on Android, one year after that, Adobe cancels Flash for mobile altogether.

“They dragged it on for months and months and three years down the line they finally kill it. It became too much of a tangle. At the end of the day the focus on what was important was lost and what is important are the developers.” – Icaza

Icaza noted that Adobe’s focus hit the more popular feature phone market through the launch of the iPhone and the rest of the smartphone market, and it was, again, three YEARS until Flash was offered on Android. Reception has been generally lukewarm, and because Flash has taken a backseat in Adobe’s business model to development tools, Flash is done for mobile. Developers, consumers, and Adobe investors have reacted negatively in the face of the move. Take a peek at this chart of the stock price today and feel the heat:

Adobe has announced that it will no longer develop Flash Player for mobile devices, confirming rumors that it is shifting to HTML5 as its mobile platform of choice. “HTML5 [is] the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms” Adobe VP Danny Winokur said on the company’s official blog, and the firm will work “with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM” to drive the standard further.

“Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations” Adobe

However, Flash on the desktop will continue to be developed, and Adobe is already working on Flash Player 12 “and a new round of exciting features which we expect to again advance what is possible for delivering high definition entertainment experiences.” Part of Adobe’s new focus, however, will be bringing advanced Flash-style features to HTML5 standards, in addition to helping developers transition between the two.

Flash had previously pulled Adobe into a fight with Apple, with Steve Jobs penning a critical open letter in which he argued the standard was unsuited to touchscreen and mobile use. Adobe even began to develop its own alternatives, in the shape of Adobe Edge, an HTML5 app production tool that was announced in pre-beta back in August.

The company announced roughly 700 job losses yesterday, as part of its reorganization strategy.

Adobe is reportedly preparing to announce it is ditching Mobile Flash development, with no further plans to push Flash Player for mobile devices. The decision, revealed to ZDNet by sources close to Adobe, will mean an end to the ongoing argument over whether Flash support on smartphones and tablets is a benefit to end-users or a hinderance, something which saw Adobe and Apple lock horns on a number of occasions. Moving forward, Adobe will concentrate on Flash on the desktop and using Adobe AIR and HTML5 for mobile deployments.

“Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates” Leaked Adobe announcement

Although currently unconfirmed by Adobe, the company’s financial results announcements this week do suggest a big change is incoming. Adobe will be “shifting resources to support even greater investment in HTML5″ the company’s Digital Media and Digital Marketing strategy plan revealed, “focusing Flash resources on delivering the most advanced PC web experiences, including gaming and premium video, as well as mobile apps.”

Back in April 2010, Steve Jobs published an open letter to Adobe and iOS device customers addressing long-standing calls for the iPhone and other devices to support Mobile Flash. “Flash has not performed well on mobile devices” the then-CEO wrote. “We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it.”

“Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers” Jobs concluded. In contrast, Android devices and other platforms have had access to Flash Player for mobile, and users of those devices have had the option whether to turn Flash support on – and face potentially longer webpage loading times, extra battery use and occasional instability – or turn it off and do without animations, games and other interactive elements.

Adobe hasn’t been resting on its Flash laurels, however. Back in August the company demonstrated an early version of Adobe Edge, a system which pulled together HTML5, JavaScript, CSS and more to create online animations and interactive gadgets. The benefit is support within iOS browsers, which are HTML5 compliant, as well as close integration with Adobe’s Creative Suite 5.5. Edge – currently in pre-beta – is one of Adobe’s new focuses, according to the strategy document.

As for Flash on Android and other platforms, Adobe will apparently commit to releasing security updates as required, but nothing more. The demise of Flash on Mobile Devices is expected to be officially confirmed sometime within the next 24 hours.

Adobe has demonstrated a photo deblurring tool that can analyze exactly how a shaky camera was held and then correct that in an image, even making tiny text legible. Tipped for inclusion in a future version of Photoshop, and demo’d at Adobe MAX 2011 last week, the tool was caught on camera by Peter Elst as it wowed developers.

The system creates a motion trajectory of the camera for the time that the shutter was open, analyzing the exact movements involved. From that – and some other unspecified parameters loaded in the background, which we’re guessing will play a pretty significant role as well – the app can backtrack through the blurring and create a sharper, corrected copy.

The system doesn’t need to work from the original RAW file from your camera, and is shown fixing a low-res image pulled from online. As for when we might expected to see the tool show up in Photoshop, sneak peeks like these “may or may not appear in a future version, we won’t commit to timing” an Adobe exec confirmed at the show.

RIM today released an important BlackBerry Tablet OS update for its PlayBook to version 1.07.3312. The free update brings the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player to address some potential security issues. There have been no known reports of PlayBooks being affected by the Adobe Flash issue, but it’s recommended to upgrade to be safe.

If you currently own a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, you should automatically get a notification for the software update. You can also check for it under the Software Update section in the settings menu. PlayBook tablets purchased after October 6 will have the update installed automatically during the setup process.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the major BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0 update that’s been rumored. The update is expected to add native email, contacts, and calendar functionality as well as the Android app player. However, it’s believed that RIM will release the update later this month during the BlackBerry DevCon event.

Adobe has announced that it is extending Air to Smart TVs and the first app to hit the smart TV realm that uses the Air platform is headed to Samsung. The new app is from VH1 and is the I Love the 80′s Trivia app. Air is Adobe’s rich content platform from cross platform devices. Air extends to TVs, mobile phones, tablets, and computers. The new app will hit Samsung Smart TVs this fall in the US.

The app will be downloadable via the Samsung Apps marketplace. Air is a key element of the Flash platform and allows the developer to make stand alone apps that can be delivered across devices and platforms. That should mean the app is available on other devices as well.

Adobe Air for TV 2.5 is available to developers right now on the 2011 Samsung Smart TV models and will be on the Blu-ray players that are available later this year in North and South America. With only a few months left in 2011, the Blu-ray players should be coming soon.

“Integrating Adobe AIR into our Smart TV platform was a logical step to ensure a robust content ecosystem for Samsung customers,” said Kyungsik Kevin Lee, vice president of Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. “By adding support for Adobe AIR for TV, we further opened the Samsung Smart TV ecosystem to more than 3 million Flash developers worldwide, who can seamlessly deliver gaming, media and data-driven apps to a wide range of Samsung devices.”

Adobe announced that its Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 will be available for download tonight starting at 9PM Pacific Time or midnight for folks on the East Coast. These latest updates were detailed back in September and are expected to bring significant improvements such as faster rendering speeds and support for 3D gaming on a variety of platforms, including mobile devices as well as connected TVs.

The updates are expected to bring hardware-accelerate 2D and 3D graphics rendering through Stage 3D. Adobe promises up to 1,000 times faster rendering performance in comparison to Flash Player 10 and AIR 2, which means up to 60FPS rendering and console quality games.

Additionally, LG and TiVo have been announced as the latest partners to bring Flash-based apps to its connected TVs via AIR, while Samsung SmartTVs already support Flash. AIR 3 will also allow developers to convert code to native apps for other platforms, including Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS, and iOS.

The announcement took place during the company’s MAX conference today, where it also revealed six new tablet-optimized apps, including Photoshop Touch, which will be heading to Android tablets first starting next month.

Adobe announced six tablet-optimized apps as part of its new cloud-based initiative that aims to enhance tools for creativity and sharing via iPads and Android tablets. Headlining the six apps is of course the company’s Photoshop Touch that brings the image editing features of the powerful desktop Photoshop software to tablet devices.

The other apps include more specialized creativity tools, including Adobe Collage, which lets you import photos and provides drawing tools to create image collages. There’s also Adobe Debut that works like a presentation software for Creative Suites files, Adobe Ideas for vector-based drawing tools, Adobe Kuler for color theme creation, and Adobe Proto for websites and mobile apps prototyping.

The apps, each costing $9.99, will be released first for Android starting next month, while release dates for the iPad versions may not be until early 2012, likely in time to debut with the iPad 3. And although there’s no mention of Windows 8 tablets, the platform is expected to support all apps that have worked in the past for Windows 7, meaning that even traditional Photoshop should work on Windows 8 tablets.

The apps will all be integrated with Adobe’s Creative Cloud, which will allow the company’s desktop and mobile apps to sync and share content. Integrations with Facebook and Google search also allow for easy grabbing and sharing of images without leaving the apps.

The software will also allow 3D gaming on connected TVs and other platforms as well.

Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 provide a cross platform environment that will deliver both gaming and video content to a wide audience using the single platform. AIR has native extensions to take advantage of unique device features and native code libraries. The developers can mix flash and HTML5 along with native code to perfect the experience for each device.

Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 will be offered to the public starting in early October. The Flash Builder and Flex framework for building apps will support the new features in Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 by the end of the year.

Microsoft’s Windows 8 Metro UI tablet interface will not support plugins, meaning that much like the route Apple has taken, Microsoft is also choosing HTML 5 over Adobe’s Flash. But that doesn’t seal the coffin yet on Adobe, as the company responds and assures that Flash will find its way to all platforms and will remain the best tool for creating the richest experiences for users.

Adobe’s platform general manager, Danny Winokur, posted an official response on the Adobe Blog addressing concerns regarding Flash support in Windows 8′s Metro UI. Winokur reminds that Flash will still be supported in the Windows 8 desktop interface, just not in the touch-friendly Metro tablet interface.

“We expect Windows desktop to be extremely popular for years to come (including Windows 8 desktop) and that it will support Flash just fine, including rich web based games and premium videos that require Flash,” said Winokur.

He also points out that Flash-based apps can still be delivered to the Metro version of Windows 8 via Adobe AIR, much like how they are currently deployed on Android, iOS, and the BlackBerry tablet OS.

However, it does seem like Adobe will have to do some transitioning to adapt more HTML 5 into its repertoire. Winokur says that the company is now more focused on providing the tools to enable publishers and developers to deliver the richest user experiences regardless of the technology behind it, be it HTML 5 or Flash. Adobe also looks forward to working with Microsoft, Google, Apple and others in the HTML community to further develop HTML 5 for delivering rich content.

Microsoft has followed in Apple’s footsteps and distanced itself from Flash, putting its energies into HTML5 in Windows 8. The Windows 8 Metro IE10 browser – accessed through the touch-friendly interface – is designed to be plugin free, the Windows engineering team suggests, relying mostly on HTML5. “Providing compatibility with legacy plug-in technologies” the team argues, “would detract from, rather than improve, the consumer experience of browsing in the Metro style UI.”

One of those “legacy” technologies is Flash, which Microsoft’s engineers reckon is the most common plugin encountered in the most popular sites. “Many of the 62% of these sites that currently use Adobe Flash already fall back to HTML5 video in the absence of plug-in support” they suggest.

Those still wanting access to Flash and other plugins will be able to switch to the regular, desktop version of IE10, however. That – which will also support pen and touch input – will play nicely with ActiveX controls and the like. If you’d prefer to stick within Metro but still get the full IE10 experience, a “Use Desktop View” option will be available on a site-by-site basis.

It seems even Adobe are trying to look beyond Flash these days, with the company demonstrating its Edge HTML5 app earlier this year as a potential alternative to the existing technology. You can see the Metro IE10 browser demonstrated in our hands-on with Windows 8 on tablets below.

Adobe has finally figured out a workaround to bring Flash video support to the iOS platform, where Apple adamantly refuses the format. During the IBC trade show today, the company unveiled the Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and Adoble Flash Acess 3.0 products that will allow publishers to deliver Flash content to iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices.

The Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and Flash Access 3.0 will essentially process the Flash video on a server that is then able to deliver the same source video to a variety of platforms including both Apple devices and Flash-compatible devices. This will make life much easier for publishers and is done through HTTP Dynamic Streaming or HTTP Live Streaming, which are both compatible with iOS.

So, it’s not exactly real Flash support on iOS, but it could actually deliver some benefits over native support. Instead of relying on the device’s processor to render, the Flash Media Server 4.5 does all the work, repackaging the Flash content for streaming, and avoiding the battery drain and buggy experience that’s associated with using Flash on mobile devices.

The Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 solution is targeted for publishers that wish to deliver their Flash content to multiple platforms and costs $4,500.

Adobe has launched its latest web tool intended to democratize establishing an online presence, Muse, which claims to allow complex HTML sites – with HTML5 and CSS support – to be created as easily as if being laid out for print. Currently in beta, Muse borrows UI and layout concepts from Adobe InDesign, with drag-and-drop menus, slideshows and other widgets that require no coding skills to implement.

Instead, it’s a case of making the page look great, and relying on Adobe’s web-elves in the background to do the clever stuff. Sitemaps are organized with straightforward flowcharts, common design elements set up using a straightforward “Master Page” system, and site-wide basics like size and colors can be handled with little fuss. Elements that can frustrate beginners – like creating floating toolbars or pinning certain items so that they always display in the same place – are made far easier to use.

The end results aren’t just static, basic pages, but can be heavily multimedia-centric with embedded Google Maps and YouTube content, hover-over animations and effects, and overlays and Photoshop layers. When you’re done, Adobe will host the site for you, or it can be exported to another host of your choice.

Adobe Muse is available in beta today as a free download from muse.adobe.com. The company says it will remain free until the v1.0 release expected in early 2012, after which point it will be available on a subscription basis at either $20 per month (with no minimum commitment) or $180 for a year. Sites won’t expire if you stop your subscription, however. It will also work with Adobe’s Edge HTML5 app, released earlier this month.

The latest Flash rival has arrived, and bizarrely it’s from Adobe itself. The company has launched Adobe Edge, currently in pre-beta, blending HTML5, JavaScript, CSS and more to create online animations and interactive gadgets. Described as building on the HTML5 output already present in Creative Suite 5.5, Edge creates HTML5-based content that will work not only in desktop browsers but in mobile browsers such as those found on Apple’s iOS-based iPhone and iPad.

By looking to HTML5, Adobe could effectively bypass Apple’s moratorium on Flash support, which seems unlikely to lift any time soon. Although Flash is supported on recent Android devices, Google itself uses more HTML5 for its own web-apps, and online heavyweights such as Facebook are believed to be using the technology – instead of Flash – for things like the Facebook iPad app and the much-rumored Project Spartan.

Edge consists of various drawing and text tools, into which SVG, PNG, JPG and GIF graphics can be imported. A timeline editor allows for easy animation of position, size, color, shape, rotation and more, and there are 25 built-in transitions along with support for modifying them. Existing HTML pages can be updated using Edge to support motion, without breaking the original CSS layouts.

Adobe is keen to point out that Edge is currently only a preview, released before its even hit beta stage so that the company can gather feedback. If it’s a success, however, it will be interesting to see to what extent it marginalizes Flash. Skyfire, popular for their mobile browser that enables viewing of Flash videos on the iOS platform, has just released a new iOS app called VideoQ. The app has similar functionality to its browser in allowing users to watch Flash videos on iOS after the files have been converted remotely, but focuses on the playback element.

The company seems to think that many iOS users still prefer to use the Safari browser and hence instead of making them replace that with the Skyfire browser, they’re now offering the Flash video component as a standalone player. It works almost like the Read It Later app, letting users import links via email, the clipboard, or a bookmarklet installed in Safari to queue Flash videos for viewing later.

On top of that, the VideoQ app also has a discovery facet to it. It offers various channels to browse, including News, Sports, Technology, Humor, Kids, and Anime. It also has a “Hot” list that highlights the most popular videos being watched. VideoQ is compatible with both iPhone and iPad interfaces and can be downloaded for $1.99 from the iTunes App Store.

Adobe will be shutting down its two app stores, the AIR Marketplace and the InMarket. The decision shows signs of defeat as well as wisdom, as Adobe reasons that developers now have many newer and more popular marketplace platforms to which they can distribute their apps. And given that, Adobe feels it should refocus resources on making it easier for developers to publish to multiple platforms rather than continuing to support its own platforms.

The announcement was posted on Adobe’s Developer Connection website stating the decision to discontinue development and support for InMarket was based on developer feedback. And that along with discontinuing InMarket, it would also shutter AIR Marketplace, which was built three years ago when there were few distribution channels available for AIR developers.

Specifically citing Apple App Store, Android Market, BlackBerry App World, Intel AppUp center, Samsung Apps, and Toshiba App Place, Adobe admits these “newer popular” app stores are better options for AIR developers, giving them more app distribution opportunities on desktops, mobile devices, and tablets. Both the InMarket and AIR Marketplace platforms will close its doors on August 31, giving developers one month make the switch to another platform.

Adobe has backtracked on claims that OS X Lion dropped hardware acceleration for Flash video, after a knowledge base article suggested that Apple had disabled the systems used to speed up rendering of such clips. In a statement on the company’s Flash Player Team blog, Adobe admits that Apple “provides the same support for Flash hardware video acceleration as Mac OS X Snow Leopard” and that their false suggestion was based on misinterpreting results from a pre-beta Lion build.

However, while the capabilities might still be there, it seems Adobe has been slow to take advantage of them. Flash Player can still use greater amounts of CPU processing than the same video would require on a Mac running Snow Leopard, as Adobe is yet to update the software to support Lion. Nonetheless, the company does say that it will “continue to work closely with Apple” on a fix.

“The final release of Mac OS X Lion (10.7) provides the same support for Flash hardware video acceleration as Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6). The previous “Known Issue” described in a tech note suggesting that video hardware acceleration was disabled in Lion was incorrect and based on tests with a pre-release version of Mac OS X Lion that related to only one particular Mac GPU configuration. We continue to work closely with Apple to provide Flash Player users with a high quality experience on Mac computers” Adobe

The Knowledge Base article that had prompted the acceleration speculation has since been updated with the same comment as from the blog. Apple dropped Flash Player from the default OS X Lion install, instead suggesting that users should download the latest version from Adobe if they required it, in what is described as a move to phase out “legacy” software.

If you ran out and updated to Lion yesterday on your Mac you may be finding that a few things don’t work like they did on Snow Leopard. Apparently, the update has disabled some of the features that Adobe Player had before like hardware acceleration. That loss will be noticed by Mac fans that try to play Flash content.

The battle between Apple and Adobe is long running and legendary. Apple is seemingly out to kill Flash in favor of more open standards and Adobe is out to take all it can from Apple. The last bit of fisticuffs between the two companies saw Adobe offering a discount for people to change from Final Cut Pro X to its Mac apps. Flash Player wasn’t the only Adobe product affected in the update though.

Lion also messed with Fireworks, Illustrator, Acrobat, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro. Adobe is saying that it is looking into supporting some Lion specific features in its Mac software like restore, autosave, versioning, full screen mode, and supporting multitouch gestures. Lion doesn’t have tech that is considered legacy by Apple including Java runtime and Flash Player, both have to be installed manually.

Earlier this week we pondered out loud whether Adobe – in addition to releasing various video tutorials showing dissatisfied Apple Final Cut Pro X users how easy it was to jump to Premiere Pro – would sweeten the deal with a discount; what we didn’t expect was that discount to amount to a whopping 50-percent. If you’ve bought Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer, you can save half on a new copy of Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium or Premiere Pro CS5.5.

“We’re hearing from video professionals that they want pro level tools that address cutting edge work but also allow them to use legacy footage and workflows,” snipes Jim Guerard, Adobe’s general manager and vice president of professional video and audio, obliquely referring to complaints from Final Cut Pro X users that they were unable to load up their old projects in the new version of Apple’s software. “At Adobe we’ve been in the trenches with video pros for years” he continues.

The offer isn’t valid for Adobe’s Premiere Pro subscriptions, the OEM bundles or Education packages, but could save you almost $400 off the full copy of Premiere Pro. That still leaves it $100 more than the $299.99 Final Cut Pro X, but Adobe is seemingly counting on general Apple dissatisfaction to motivate would-be buyers.

Apple has promised six-monthly updates to Final Cut Pro X as well as offering refunds to dissatisfied upgraders.

Final Cut Pro X was released last week after much anticipation from video editors. However, that excitement turned, in some cases, to disappointment, with complaints that the software lacked backward compatibility with projects created in older versions, as well as some of the previously standard features they had come to rely on. In response, Apple has begun offering special refunds to users wanting to step back to previous versions.

That still leaves those editors looking at what path they want to take with their video software, and despite claims of six-monthly updates to Final Cut Pro X, Adobe reckons the best route is via its own, rival app. For instance, it has featured cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, who switched to Premiere Pro so that he could edit video shot on his DSLR for the film Act of Valor.

Whether that will be enough remains to be seen, though we wouldn’t be surprised if Adobe offered would-be switchers a discount to trade in their old Final Cut Pro versions and get a shiny new copy of Premiere Pro instead.

RIM has announced that yesterday some update plug-ins for the BlackBerry PlayBook landed from Adobe. The plug-ins are for Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 and Adobe AIR 2.7. The updates allow apps to work across multiple devices and make it easier for devs to build apps that will run on all sorts of devices. AIR 2.7 supports lets devs access all that Air has to offer with support for Flex and ActionScript.

The PlayBooks needs the 1.0.6.2390 OTA update to support the new version of Air 2.7 and the update is available right now and includes the 10.3 version of Flash Player. The new Flash Builder plug-ins are also geared towards making it easier to develop for the PlayBook. Developers haven’t exactly flocked to the PlayBook so every little bit of work reduction will help lure those devs.

Devs can download the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe Air from the BlackBerry Dev zone and the SDK needs AIR 2.6 or higher. The SDK needs AIR 2.6 or new 2.7 update to operate, which means you also need the OTA update for the PlayBook I mentioned before.

Adobe has just released Flash Player 10.3, and it is available in the Android Market. This now bumps Flash up to version 10.3.185.21. Flash 10.3 is available for Android 2.2 Froyo, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and Android 3.01 Honeycomb devices, and it also supports Android 3.1. The release comes with several new features, and some important bug fixes. Continue after the cut for more details.

Looking over the changelog, this release contains updates for a few things, such as enhanced browser integration for Android 3.1 and hardware acceleration. In the Android Market, Adobe recommends that Honeycomb users upgrade to Android 3.1 first to take advantage of all the new features.

In the release notes, Adobe mentions enabling NEON optimizations for OMAP 4 processors, a corrected issue on the Galaxy S where some videos at resolutions of 720p and below were not displayed, and some fixed issues with browser plugins for Honeycomb. There are also some fixes for the EVO S, and a fix for an issue that caused video frames to stop rendering on longer streaming videos (over an hour). So it looks like some good stuff in there.

Anyone upgraded yet? Encounter any issues?

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been criticized for its shortage of applications – even having to turn to Android later in 2011 to make up the shortfall – but it could get some salvation among artistic types with Adobe’s help. Taking to the stage with RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis at BlackBerry World 2011, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed that the company would bring its “creative applications” to the tablet.

It’s not clear at this stage which Adobe apps will actually make the leap. Photoshop or the Creative Suite would certainly help differentiate the PlayBook from the rest of the tablets out there, though the Adobe Touch SDK will at least see slates like the iPad and, in future, Android models integrate better with the company’s desktop software.

As it stands, many of RIM’s new apps for the PlayBook are written using Adobe AIR – such as the Facebook app announced yesterday - and Adobe also announced that Creative Suite 5.5 is shipping today with support for PlayBook apps out of the box. Estimated street price for the suites is US$2599 for CS5.5 Master Collection, US$1899 for CS5.5 Design Premium, US$1799 for CS5.5 Web Premium, US$1699 for CS5.5 Production Premium and US$1299 for CS5.5 Design Standard.

The latest OTA update isn’t anything as dramatic as a core OS update, but it does add Flash Player support to the 10-inch tablet.

In addition, there’s support for USB keyboard and mouse, which should make content creation on the GTab more straightforward. ViewSonic has also added a couple of new languages, an energy-saving lock screen and support for an external docking station.

The GTab update is being delivered OTA, and owners of the tablet should get a notification in the top bar that the new software is available when they next power-cycle or turn on.

[Thanks n900mixalot!]

I’d like to go on record saying that one of the only things from Adobe that interests me in the slightest is Flash for my iPad. Get to work on that, thanks. Adobe and Apple still have no agreement for support of Flash content on the iPad, but Adobe is touting its new streaming of Adobe Flash Media Server across multiple devices like the iPad 2, Samsung TVs, the Motorola Xoom and the Atrix smartphone.

Adobe announced last year that it was supporting HTTP Dynamic Streaming on the Adobe Flash Platform. Adobe has added support for another format to the offerings. Adobe is now supporting HTTP Live Streaming or HLS. HLS is a MPEG2 transport streaming container that can be used by devices like the iPad 2. With support for HLS within the Flash Media Server Adobe has reduced the complexity for broadcasters looking to reach HTML5 supporting browser like users of the Safar browser on Apple gear.

The HLS support also allows the support of any platform where Flash is not installed. When Flash is installed, the system will steam the video using F4F over HTTP. The Flash Media Server with new support is being shown off at NAB right now.

Adobe may not be quite ready to release Photoshop for iPad, as previewed last month, but it has looked to the iPad for extra functionality when it comes to the latest version of Photoshop in Creative Suite 5.5. Three new iOS apps for the iPad have been released – Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop – turning the Apple tablet into a remote control panel for the graphics software. Each uses Adobe’s new Touch SDK.

Adobe Color Lava handles custom color creation, using the tablet to make new swatches and themes that can then be pulled back into the main app. Adobe Eazel is basically finger-painting for grown-ups, with various software trickery to make your daubings look like real paint. Both apps work either directly linked to Photoshop or as standalone tools that can be later sync’d.

Finally, Adobe Nav pushes navigation and control off of your main computer screen and onto the iPad, with customizable toolbars and the ability to handle up to 200 open Photoshop files. The three apps will go on sale in early May 2011, priced between $1.99 and $4.99.

As for Adobe’s Touch SDK, that will work not only with the iPad but with Android, QNX as on the BlackBerry PlayBook, and iOS on the iPhone and iPod touch, giving developers a new way to integrate mobile devices (and mobile apps) with Photoshop. The company claims it has already signed up a number of developers to create apps, so we should be seeing the third-party spoils later in the year.

Press Release:

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Integrates Tablets into Creative Workflows

New Touch SDK Kick-Starts the Development of Interactive Tablet Apps that Communicate Directly with Photoshop CS5

SAN JOSE, Calif. — April 11, 2011 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the Photoshop® Touch Software Development Kit (SDK) inviting developers worldwide to create mobile and tablet applications that interact with Adobe® Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended software, uniting the fun and interactive experience of touch devices with the power and precision of Photoshop. The Photoshop Touch SDK and a new scripting engine in Photoshop CS5 now opens the door for Android™, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS apps to drive and interact with Photoshop on the desktop. Adobe today also launched Creative Suite® 5.5, a significant mid-cycle release to the industry-leading design and development software for virtually every creative workflow across print, video, mobile and online media (see separate press releases).

Using the Touch SDK, Adobe has developed three initial Photoshop CS5 companion apps for Apple iPad: Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop. The apps are designed to enable users to create custom color swatches, paint and drive popular Photoshop tools from tablet devices.

“Our research shows that creatives are adopting tablets faster than any other group and we heard loud and clear that they want to use their devices to interact with Photoshop, the tool they depend on most of all,” said John Loiacono, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Media Solutions, Adobe. “The apps that we announced today show some of the creative ways tablets can work with Photoshop and over the next few months Photoshop’s vibrant developer community is going to dazzle us with innovative apps that further integrate tablet devices into creative workflows.”

Photoshop SDK Encourages Creative Development
Adobe has developed three initial Photoshop Touch apps: Adobe Color Lava, Adobe Eazel and Adobe Nav. Adobe Color Lava, allows creative professionals to use their fingertips to mix colors on the iPad, creating custom color swatches and themes to transfer back into Photoshop. Adobe Eazel, which takes advantage of cutting-edge painting technology, lets digital artists create rich realistic paintings with their fingertips and introduces a new kind of interaction between “wet” and “dry” paints. These paintings can then be sent directly to Photoshop CS5 for compositing or for taking the artwork further. Lastly, Adobe Nav increases workflow efficiency by letting users select and control Photoshop tools using the iPad as the input surface, customize the toolbar, browse and zoom in on up to 200 open Photoshop files or easily create new files. All three applications take advantage of the iPad tablet’s touch screen for a truly immersive, tactile, on-the-go experience. While the first applications available are for the Apple iPad and the iOS, the Photoshop Touch SDK makes development possible on other devices, including Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.

Utilizing the Touch SDK, developers will have wide access to Photoshop functionality with the freedom to innovate and create new apps or add capabilities to existing ones. Adobe has already engaged with a number of developers across the industry to incorporate tablets and other devices into creative workflows that empower Photoshop users in new and groundbreaking ways.

Pricing and Availability
Developers can access the free Adobe Photoshop Touch SDK today for Windows and Mac OS platforms on the Adobe Application Manager at www.adobe.com/devnet/photoshop. Current Photoshop CS5 customers can experience the value of the connection to devices by downloading and installing a free patch available on www.adobe.com or via the Adobe Application Manager, beginning May 3, 2011.
Flash Enabled Devices on the Rise
With more than 131 million smartphones expected to have Flash Player installed by the end of the year, Adobe Flash makes it possible to bring rich content to desktops and devices inside the browser.
Adobe offered up a live demo of the new app. One of the key features for the new app is the ability to use layer animation to give a look at what is going on behind the scenes in the app with your photos.

When the full app will land isn’t known, but photography types should like the idea of more interaction with photos for editing while on the go using the light iPad. Check out the video demo at the source below.

Google jumped the queue because of its deal with Adobe over Flash integration in Chrome, getting early access to the latest builds including the bug-fixed version currently in the pipeline. Those not using Chrome could still fall foul of the exploit, which embeds a Flash file in an Excel document that, if opened on a PC, can open that computer up to hacker access. Adobe hopes to release a fix for Flash Player on other browsers this week.

Adobe has announced that the Flash Player 10.2 update for Android 3.0.1 Honeycomb tablets such as the Motorola XOOM will be released on March 18. Made available through the Android Market, as with the current Flash Player 10.1 release for Android smartphones, the updated version will be the production version for Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices and the beta for Honeycomb slates.

On Honeycomb, Flash Player 10.2 will support the Stage Video rendering pipeline for hardware accelerated H.264 playback, as well as deep integration with the Android browser rendering engine; that will see the Adobe software rendering HTML, images and GIF animation, among other things, which should result in smoother scrolling and better integration between HTML and Flash content. There’ll also be automatic on-screen keyboard support, so that Flash apps and content coded with desktop implementations in mind will also be usable on tablets.

An OTA update for the XOOM, Android 3.0.1, began distribution earlier today, paving the way for the incoming Flash Player 10.2 update. However, you can also update manually following the instructions here.

Motorola has begun pushing out a new update for the XOOM tablet, which updates the slate to Android 3.0.1. The new firmware, build number HRI66 – which Motorola tweeted was to pave the way for the incoming Flash Player 10.2 update – currently lacks a build log, so it’s hard to know what else may have changed.

However, it’s also believed to contain a daylight-savings-time fix, ahead of the clocks changing this coming weekend. As for when Flash Player 10.2 will arrive exactly, we still don’t know; Motorola and Adobe said “2-3 weeks” back in late February, which could mean any day now, and a quick launch might give the XOOM a chance to overshadow the iPad 2 which went on sale in the US this morning.

Adobe has released the first beta of its experimental Flash to HTML conversion tool, Adobe Wallaby. Gobbling up Flash animations and artwork and spitting out a mixture of HTML, CSS, SVG and JavaScript, Wallaby is the first public release of the Flash-to-HTML5 app demonstrated at MAX 2010 last year.

An Adobe AIR app, Wallaby produces HTML files that can then be edited as normal. However, the company has warned that some of the functionality from Flash Professional will be lost in the process, since not all of the features have direct counterparts.

The tool will allow Flash developers to more easily deploy their content – expected initially to include things like banner app animations – on browsers without Flash support, such as on iOS and other mobile devices. “Adobe lives or dies by its ability to help customers solve real problems” Adobe’s John Nack said last year, “that means putting pragmatism ahead of ideology.”
