No free Windows 10 lunch for PC pirates

Microsoft's appetite to get Windows 10 on as many PCs as possible may have seen it extend an olive branch to those running stolen software, but it won't be a free lunch. The software giant surprised many earlier this year with its promise of a complimentary update in the first year; now, tackling the thorny issue of whether those running "non-genuine" prior versions of Windows will also get the free 10 upgrade, Microsoft's Terry Myerson has confirmed that it won't be so simple.

ASUS ZenBook UX305 Crystal White Limited Edition now available

On Wednesday, ASUS announced a new limited laptop called the ZenBook UX305 Crystal White Limited Edition ultrabook (as well as a standard edition champagne gold UX305). Only 200 units of the white model will be made; they're available to purchase now for $999 USD, while the standard version is priced at $699 USD. The laptop (the special edition, that is) features a 13.3-inch IPS matte display with a 3200 x 1800 pixels resolution. It brings with it all the goodies you’d hope to find on an ultrabook, as well as Windows 8.1.

Verizon officially unveils LG Lancet Windows smartphone

As expected, a new Windows smartphone called the LG Lancet is coming to Verizon Wireless, something the carrier made official today. The LG Lancet is said to be the first Windows Phone offering on Verizon to feature Advanced Calling 1.0, which gives users HD voice calls when talking to another Verizon user with an Advanced Calling handset. In addition, the phone brings with it Windows Phone 8.1 and a load of modest but notable features, including support for a 128GB micro SD card.

This morning Skype Translator Preview dropped its sign-in requirement, making it easier for new users to take part in the translation action. This app works with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 preview for both PCs and tablets. Users will be able to download the app, open it up, and begin speaking with translation assistance right out the gate. This app currently has four available spoken languages as well as 50 instant messaging languages for use by the public.

“ARK: Survival Evolved” lets you ride a dinosaur in VR

The dinosaur-filled "ARK: Survival Evolved" MMO has been announced today with plans for virtual reality involvement on PlayStation 4. This game will be played from a first-person perspective and will have users walking around an ancient landscape with futuristic tools. You'll have "about 60 distinct species" of ancient Earth creature in "a real place that you can walk through, explore, and truly experience in your own way." This is the dinosaur age of video games starting in earnest. This is really happening, and it's happening on the PlayStation 4 with Project Morpheus, Xbox One, and Steam for both PC and Mac systems.
