Star Trek’s Holodeck has been recreated in SteamVR

Star Trek’s Holodeck has been recreated in SteamVR

Whenever I start talking about VR experiences to anyone, especially when it comes to the Vive, there are a couple of references that inevitably get made. The first is The Matrix, as no one can be told what VR is. You have to see it for yourself. The other is the Holodeck from Star Trek. Well now you'll be able to experience the Holodeck for yourself.

Valve releases CAD files for Steam Controller

Valve releases CAD files for Steam Controller

When you want to mod something like a controller, there's a fair bit of work that goes into it, before you can really even start. Depending on how you're wanting to modify it, you have to do precise measurements, and sometimes even try to map the entire thing in 3D. Well, if you've ever wanted to make some changes to your Steam Controller, Valve has just made the process a lot easier.

Let’s See: Live Motion Capture VR

Let’s See: Live Motion Capture VR

Now that we've got the first consumer-level VR headsets out in the wild, it's only a matter of time before we see full motion capture immersion. What I mean is when you see someone inside the virtual world, you'll see their whole body. Their face will reflect what's actually being shown on their actual head in real time. Their body will be represented by a reasonably reconstructed virtual version of their real form. All we need is faster internet and the world's best GPUs.

Steam releases Desktop Game Theater beta for playing any game in VR

It was only about a week ago that Valve announced a new feature for its SteamVR software, Desktop Game Theater, which will allow soon-to-be HTC Vive and Oculus Rift owners to play any game on their headset, beyond those specifically designed for virtual reality. With both VR hardware options about to start shipping in the coming weeks, Valve has just rolled out a public beta for Desktop Game Theater, so those with developer editions of the headsets can give it a try.

Hands-on with Valve’s The Lab – Your introduction to VR

Hands-on with Valve’s The Lab – Your introduction to VR

The Portal games are among my favorites for a number of reasons. I'm a big fan of solving puzzles and condescending robots, and those games really satisfied both areas. The second game wrapped up the story of Chell pretty neatly, but there's still a lot more to explore at Aperture Laboratories. While at GDC, Valve gave me a peek into some of the various Pocket Universes that we'll be able to explore in The Lab.

VR’s Secret Sweet Spot: The Mundane

VR’s Secret Sweet Spot: The Mundane

With the launch titles being shown for each of the first major players in VR this week, it's quickly becoming clear: mundane is in. Simplicity, not insanity. Not the most visually spectacular. Instead - like it was with the first big games and apps for the smartphone back when it first gained steam - the games with the most recognizable mechanics are set to be the most important. Case in point: mini golf.

HTC Vive gets Desktop Theater Mode for playing any game in VR

With the new HTC Vive virtual reality headset running SteamVR, Valve has paved the way for users to play VR-specific games as soon as the device arrives. But what about when you feel like playing an older game, or one that isn't designed for VR? Valve is already on it, as they've just announced a Desktop Theater Mode feature, which will allow any Steam title to run on the Vive, as well as any future SteamVR headsets.

HTC Vive first impressions: whats in the box?

HTC Vive first impressions: whats in the box?

Just last night I received my Vive Pre developer's kit, which I'm very stoked about. I've only spent a few brief minutes with the Vive, as opposed to the Rift, which I've spent a good deal of time with. Instead of tearing into the package and setting it all up in a hurry, I thought I'd take some time to document the contents.

Valve announces Portal VR game, dubbed The Lab

Valve is known for a lot of different things. Their popular Steam platform, releasing games on their own schedule, and their inability to count to 3, among other things. Well, fans of the Portal series should be excited to hear that Valve is releasing a new entry into the series. But don't expect to see the number 3 attached to it.

Steam may discount bundles, based on the games you already own

Steam may discount bundles, based on the games you already own

Bundles are a great way to save money when you're buying games. Sometimes you'll find a deal that will put three our four games together for the price of one. But what about those times when you already own the game? If you're buying from Steam, this means that you won't get a spare key for the game you already own. Instead, you just miss out on that part of the deal. But that may be changing soon.

HTC Vive saw 15,000 pre-orders in its first 10 minutes

It seems there's a lot of people out there ready to dive into the future of consumer virtual reality devices. Turns out the first 10 minutes alone saw 15,000 orders placed, said HTC VR employee Shen Ye on Twitter earlier today.

Peek behind the scenes of Portal, and hear how the voice acting magic happens

Peek behind the scenes of Portal, and hear how the voice acting magic happens

Voice acting is an interesting craft. While you might think that it's just as simple as walking into a booth, and delivering lines, there's a lot more to it. After all, you need to convey all of the emotion of a scene, using nothing more than your voice. If you've ever wanted a peek behind the scenes to see how the voices in Portal are done, then I've got a treat for you.
