Simplistic messaging company Peek is looking to move away from standalone hardware and instead position itself as a software provider for budget-smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturers. CEO Amol Sarva told GigaOm that Peek's power-frugral software - which offers support for push-email, location-based services and basic social networking integration, all on 100MHz chips - is set to arrive on five phones in the next month, and on thirty by the end of 2011. The Peek family of devices has seen a couple revisions over the years, and found a way into the hearts of several people out there. With devices launching in European countries over the summer, along with a major software upgrade around the same time, it would have been no shock if the company behind the little mobile device decided to wait on releasing a new piece of hardware. We've been waiting for the Peek to arrive in Europe for months now, and we've just got word from cross-European MVNO Spotnik that the dedicated emailer is now available for order. €59 ($71) gets you the Peek itself - capable of receiving push email from up to five accounts - while Europe-wide service is either €19.99 ($24) per month, €49.99 ($60) per quarter or €159.99 ($193) per year. Peek's cryptic tease about their upcoming "really, truly big stuff" has been fleshed out a little, and it looks as though the change isn't new hardware but in fact a software update. In a recent WSJ piece, Peek CEO Amol Sarva confirmed that the company's "big product news is coming this summer: a free upgrade to all Peeks that significantly expands the capabilities of our mobile internet device." FON Peek hits Europe Dec 15th: €99 with no roaming fees

The Peek emailer looks to be finally getting a European launch this month, courtesy of WiFi-sharers FON. FON's CEO, Martin Varsavsky, has confirmed in his blog that the QWERTY handheld will arrive in Europe come December 15th, priced at €99 ($146) including the first six months of service. After that, the monthly service fee will be €12.90 ($19) with no ongoing contract, but to sweeten the deal owners will be able to use their Peek anywhere in Europe without paying roaming fees. Peek's recent TwitterPeek may not have met with the glowing reviews the company might have hoped for, but the original email-centric Peek (and newer Peek Pronto) are still decent examples of how a single-purpose gadget can suit a lot of people. Should we be surprised that Peek's TwitterPeek messenger has pretty much fallen flat in its first review? The dedicated Twitter messenger has been official for less than 24 hours, but already PC Mag have slated its speed and functionality, not to mention questioning its very purpose.
