Nintendo taps Facebook to kickstart Mario Maker hype

Nintendo taps Facebook to kickstart Mario Maker hype

With the game, or rather game maker, delayed for nearly half a year, Nintendo really better make sure that Mario Maker will hit all the right PR notes when it does. And who better to know how to do that than the very people behind one of the world's greatest hype machines, Facebook. For two days next week, Facebook employees will have the exclusive privilege of doing something that many game designers and developers past could only dream of: creating officially sanction, accepted, and even distributed Super Mario levels.

Nintendo tells Github to remove browser compatible Game Boy emulator

Nintendo tells Github to remove browser compatible Game Boy emulator

While playing older video games via emulator may be somewhat common among gamers these days, the companies that make those games, especially Nintendo, don't always appreciate it. In fact, Nintendo's American division even contacted Github last week with a request to takedown a JavaScript-powered emulator for the Game Boy Advance, as it also included a large number of pre-loaded games. The game company said the Github-hosted project violated their copyrights, and cited both the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and Github's guide to DMCA removal requests.

Wii U demise might come sooner, 5 mobile games scheduled

Perhaps there is very little doubt in anyone's mind that the Wii U is on its way out, especially after Nintendo confirmed the existence of its NX successor. But the ball might actually be rolling sooner than most of us have presumed. Considering Nintendo's notoriety as a slow moving dinosaur, it is almost unfathomable that Nintendo would be putting the axe to its somewhat failed attempt at a current gen console. According to WIRED, however, the signs are quite strong. And perhaps more importantly, rapid change might exactly be what the doctor prescribed.

Nintendo to aim for a “free-to-start” mobile gaming model

By announcing its plans to start a presence on mobile, Nintendo has practically sealed its fate in that part of the market. But, as with many advanced announcement, details of those plans haven't been fleshed out or, in some cases, might be totally non-existent. Nintendo isn't divulging much of its plans for the future but, at a recent shareholders' meeting, CEO Satoru Iwata revealed one aspect of its mobile business plan. It wants to distance itself from the negative image of "free-to-play" and will instead adopt a "free-to-start" business model. In other words, we're back to the days of demoware.

This hybrid Sony-Nintendo PlayStation prototype began a war

This hybrid Sony-Nintendo PlayStation prototype began a war

As gaming collaborations go, Nintendo and Sony might seem unlikely bedfellows, but the discovery of one super-rare console proves it wasn't always that way. The Nintendo PlayStation was to be a grand coming-together of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and a CD component built by Sony for a new type of SNES CD game. The deal eventually soured, and Sony went its own way on the PlayStation project, but not before a small number of prototypes were constructed.

Splatoon is getting a new ‘Tower Control’ mode

Nintendo has announced that Splatoon is about to get a new multi-player game mode for both “kids and squids”, a mode that is called Tower Control. This will join the multi-player modes already offered in the game, and will be applied in Ranked Battle — says Nintendo, this includes Splat Zones. With Tower Control, gamers are tasked with riding a tower that is floating into the enemy base — this will, however, also leave the person who is riding it more open to being splatted.

Dark Pit amiibo arrives at Best Buy this month

The amiibo craze shows no signs of slowing, and getting your hands on the latest one is (usually) quite the battle. Enter Dark Pit, the next amiibo to arrive as part of Nintendo’s rollouts this year. The figurine will be hitting digital shelves at Best Buy soon, but the retailer has announced ahead of time that it is instituting some ordering limitations to (hopefully) quell the chaos.
