ASUS have officially announced their Eee PC 1004DN, the first model in the company’s netbook range to include an integrated optical drive.  As well as an Intel Atom N270 1.66GHz processor, the Intel GN40 graphics chipset and up to 2GB DDR2 RAM, the ASUS Eee PC 1004DN has a Super-Multi DVD burner.

According to the latest rumors from retailers, the DVD-equipped ASUS Eee PC E1004DN will land in stores come mid-April with a sticker price of NT$18,000 – 20,000 ($531 - 590).  The Eee PC E1004DN – first spotted at CES earlier this year – will have an Intel Atom N280 processor, the HD-capable GN40 graphics chipset and a 120GB hard-drive.  Those same sources have also tipped the launch of the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA.

ASUS have listed a new netbook, the ASUS Eee PC 1002H, a 10-inch WSVGA 1024 x 600 model with chiclet-style keys and up to 5hrs runtime from the standard battery.  The Eee PC 1002H has an Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory and a combined 160GB hard-drive and 10GB of online Eee Storage.

UK pricing for the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA has been announced, with the ultracompact netbook believed to come in at £359.  The netbook – which measures one-inch thick and uses Intel’s Atom N280 processor, together with a 10-inch LED backlit display – is expected to arrive in the UK sometime during April.

Still no sign of the new color options for the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE that were leaked late last month, but if you want a somewhat more usable upgrade option for your netbook then how about a touchscreen?  ASUS are yet to launch their T91 touchscreen convertible netbook, so until then dust off your screwdrivers, thoroughly ground yourself and check out this three-part video tutorial to fitting a touch-panel to the 1000HE.

Lurking in a corner of CeBIT was this modified ASUS Eee PC 701, which had been given the multitouch touchscreen treatment.  Now we’ve seen touchscreen hacks for ASUS’ smallest Eee PC before, but this is the first time its responded to more than one finger at a time.

ASUS is reportedly considering merging its mainstream notebook and Eee PC netbook departments, in an attempt to save costs.  The two teams, which up until now have been kept discrete, have already been informed of the consolidation, according to market sources.

A netbook might not be much cop for video editing, but it’s certainly clever enough to act as the brain of a robot.  That’s the attitude robo-makers RoBe:Do have taken, with their first two software-ready autonomous robots, each delivered full-assembled and just waiting for your Eee PC (or similar) to drop in and control things.

As busy weeks go, this one has certainly been something to write home about (or at least a Week in Review about), with CeBIT, PMA and an Apple mega-announcement all taking place. ASUS arguably stole the former show in Germany, with the Eee PC 1008HA “Shell” once again proving that netbooks needn’t be the ugly cousins to expensive ultraportable notebooks.
