With the price of original ASUS Eee PC 7xx-series netbooks so low on eBay these days, it seems a great idea to revisit the concept of modding one into a small touchscreen UMPC.  That’s just what EeeUser forum member Mark has done, turning his 701 into a handheld with 2GB of RAM and draft-n WiFi.

ASUS’ prince among netbooks, the Eee PC 1008HA “Shell”, is beginning to show up for pre-order at various UK retailers.  The rumor had been that the 1-inch thick Atom netbook would land in the UK sometime during April, but right now there doesn’t seem to be a consensus among stores: estimates at Amazon are still putting it 1-2 months away, while the BT Shop suggests just 1-2 weeks.

It’s been a week of mobile device reviews, along with the Bluetooth accessories that go with them, here at SlashGear, with Samsung’s Tocco Ultra S8300 and Instinct S30 showing up for playtime.  We also gave our opinion on the big news in Bluetooth headsets, in the shape of the Plantronics Voyager Pro and the Aliph Jawbone PRIME.  Finally, HTC’s Touch Diamond2 flaunted itself in a video unboxing, while the Mophie Juice Pack Air for the iPhone 3G got its review.

image01ASUS announced today that they would now be offering their super popular Eee PC 1000HA netbook model with a new addition: a chiclet-style keyboard that’s more comfortable and easier to use.

Prior to the update, some of the keys were in non-traditional places, making typing by touch difficult. But that’s remedied now, and the 92% keyboard feels comfortable and responds easily and accurately since the keys are separated and blocky.

Battery life has also been increased to 7 hours thanks to energy-saving components like the Intel Atom processor, the LED-backlit display and the Super Hybrid Engine or SHE, which lets you adjust power consumption as you see fit. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, a 10.2-inch screen with a 1,024 x 600 resolution, a 160GB HDD, Wi-Fi B and G and 10GB of online storage. You can get the revised Eee PC 1000HA now for $349.
