More and more notebooks and netbooks are getting multitouch-capable touchpads, but if you’re chugging away with your existing machine and you want some straightforward multi-directional scrolling then you may need to take things into your own hands.  As you can see from the newly-acquired nubbin in the right palm-rest on this Eee PC 901, modder Dave Astolfo decided to extract the trackball from an Apple Mighty Mouse and implant it into his netbook.

You’ve got to hand it to ASUS: one way or another they’ll keep pumping out the Eee PCs until everybody has at least two of their various netbooks.  If they’re not announcing a fresh model then it’s a new color scheme, and today the Eee PC 1005HA and 1008HA “Seashell” netbooks bear the brunt of ASUS’ designers felt-tipped pens.

Earlier in the month we heard that Atom N270 based netbooks and nettops would be unlikely candidates for inclusion in the Windows 7 Upgrade Program, and that’s looking to indeed be the case.  ASUS have announced details of their program, including which models will be eligible, and only two of the company’s sprawling Eee PC netbook line are included: the 1101HA and the 1005HA.

It comes as no great surprise, seeing as we saw the product page back in May, comparison shots with the 1008HA a few days after and an unboxing video a few days ago, but ASUS have now officially announced the Eee PC 1005HA Seashell.  Available to preorder from today, the 1005HA Seashell has the usual Intel Atom processor – in this case the 1.66GHz N280 – paired with 1GB of RAM, but it also offers what ASUS are calling the longest-lasting battery life for one of their netbooks to-date: up to 10.5hrs, in fact.

The ASUS Eee PC T91 has made its official debut on the company’s US website, and according to one dealer it’s apparently set to hit stores this week.  The 8.9-inch convertible touchscreen netbook is already available in the UK, with Intel’s Z520 1.33GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD.

Not exactly a huge surprise, given that it was spotted back at Computex earlier this month in both standard and integrated 3G forms, but ASUS have finally got official with their Eee PC 1101HA netbook.  The 11.6-inch ultraportable shares the same “Seashell” stylings as the smaller Eee PC 1008HA and 1005HA, but uses Intel’s Atom Z520 1.33GHz processor and a WXGA 1366 x 768 display.

Back in January at CES, ASUS’ Eee PC T91 was announced as part of the company’s push for multitouch netbooks.  As the months have passed, and the T91 itself reached the hands of reviewers, the fact that it has a single-touch, resistive panel is obvious.  Over at Computex, though, ASUS have been demonstrating a T91 with a capacitive multitouch-capable panel.

The new ASUS models from Computex keep on coming, and latest to be spotted are a pair of new Eee Top touchscreen all-in-ones and a 3G-enabled version of the Eee PC 1005HA, the 1005HGo.  The two desktops are the Eee Top ET2203T and the Eee Top ET2202T, and while they ostensibly look similar their specifications are surprisingly diverse.

ASUS haven’t only brought their 11.6-inch Eee PC 1101H to Computex 2009, but a sibling of the netbook with integrated mobile broadband.  The ASUS Eee PC 1101HGo throws 3G into the mixture, keeping the 1101H’s Atom Z520 or Z530 processor but slotting in a slightly larger battery.

As you might expect, Computex brings with it not only official news but plenty of rumor, and the first netbook whispers suggest that the segment is growing increasingly competitive.  ASUS – when they’re not slapping Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets into Eee PCs – are tipped to be evaluating NVIDIA’s Ion GPU for future products, according to industry sources, while they also suggest that the Eee Box B1006 nettop spotted on Friday will use Ion when it launches in Q3 2009.
