Google may have started out with cellphones for their Android platform, but that doesn’t mean they’re limiting their future options.  The guys over at VentureBeat have loaded the open-source OS onto an Eee PC 1000 netbook, with a display almost five times the size of the T-Mobile G1, and aside from some initial networking and sound issues Android is now running normally on the ASUS machine.

ASUS’ Eee PC 1002HA promised an interesting blend of S101 style and somewhat more wallet-friendly pricing, with your $499 getting you brushed aluminum, sub-2.6lb weight and less than 1-inch thickness.  Underneath all that, though, there’s the usual 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and 1GB of RAM, raising the question of whether you’re still just throwing money at design.  Liliputing have been finding out.

At first glance, ASUS’ Eee Top ET1602 is the epitome of a niche product.  Packing nettop-spec hardware in an all-in-one form factor, with a touchscreen and general design that seem to have stopped by HP’s TouchSmart and the Apple iMac along the way, it’s certainly tough to pin down.  Innovative new segment or just another Eee oddity: SlashGear set to finding out.

We’ve seen Tablet PC mods of netbooks before, but Aeeeris are making the conversion even easier with their new faceplate for the 700-series ASUS Eee PC.  With it, turning your clamshell netbook into a touchscreen slate-style UMPC is even more straightforward; Aeeeris claim it can be done in just 30 minutes.

ASUS are planning a Celeron version of their Eee Box nettop, which will be cheaper than the current Intel Atom N270 model.  According to DigiTimes, poor sales of the Eee Box – which packs hardware usually found in the company’s Eee PC netbook into a slender desktop form-factor – has prompted the new entry-level machine, which will go on sale alongside the existing nettop.

ASUS have officially announced the Eee PC 1002HA, which was first spotted back in October.  Borrowing some of the S101 luxury netbook’s stylings, including a brushed aluminum lid and wrist-rest, the 1002HA measures 1-inch thick and weighs around 2.6lbs.  Under the hood there’s the usual 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard-drive.

ASUS’s Eee PC 1002HA – which boasts the style of the S101 but a price more in line with the rest of the 1000-series netbooks – has finally made a live appearance, with LaptopMag spending some time with a very early pre-production unit.  Although non-functional (there was no hard-drive inside), it does show off the new Eee’s slick design, which is expected to land in the US come the start of December.

ASUS CEO Jerry Shen has revealed some more details of the company’s plans for the Eee Top all-in-one PC, which officially launched yesterday.  Shen has previously suggested that the touchscreen desktop would be a ‘flagship product’ for 2009; now, he’s confirmed that 20- and 22-inch versions will launch in the first half of next year.

ASUS Eee Top ET1602 launched

By Chris Davies on Thursday, Nov 20th 2008 1 Comment

As promised, ASUS have held a glittering launch for the new Eee Top touchscreen all-in-one desktop PC.  Despite having to suffer the indignities of being poked at by models with surprisingly long nails, the Eee Top held up well; Engadget China report that it feels as sturdy as most other EeePC machines, and that the touchscreen is responsive and doesn’t require more than the most casual of grazes.

January is a long way off, says ASUS (probably; we haven’t actually asked them).  Their Eee Top all-in-one PC is set to launch in the US tomorrow, according to CIO, with two versions of the touchscreen nettop up for grabs.  Both have the 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, run Windows XP and have ASUS’ own finger-friendly interface; the ET1603 adds ATI HD3450 graphics and, although this runs contrary to what we’ve heard previously, a battery for mobile use.
