US Dell Streak: no T-Mobile 3G confirmed, Android 2.1 gets video demo

It comes as no surprise, but Dell has confirmed that the Streak that's expected to launch in the US imminently is only certified for AT&T, and lacks support for T-Mobile USA's 3G networks.  That means that, while the 5-inch Android tablet will still work on T-Mobile for voice and EDGE data, you won't see high-speed browsing unless you rely on WiFi.  Meanwhile, Dell has reiterated its intentions to release Android 2.2 Froyo for the Streak "later this year", and they've even demonstrated an Android 2.1 Eclair prototype to whet our appetites.

Dell Streak Retail Packaging Revealed, Maybe

Dell Streak Retail Packaging Revealed, Maybe

There's still plenty of hype out there for the Dell Streak. If you don't recall, we did a pretty handy review of the device not too long ago, and we're definitely looking forward to it. With that being said, the retail packaging was strictly for those in the United Kingdom/Europe, so we've still been left in the dark to what it may look like for the State-side launch, which is still rumored to be some time by the end of July. Well, you can finally count your blessings, because here it is. Maybe.

Lessons for Android Tablet Vendors

Lessons for Android Tablet Vendors

A few weeks back, Apple reported that it have sold more than two million iPads in less than two months. I think we can safely say the market is now validated and there's room for a device that falls between the phone and the PC in the consumer ecosystem. It also means that competitors are not going to cede this market to Apple and the space is going to heat up big time over the next few months. Many of these devices will run Android, among the first out of the gate will be a 5-inch device from Dell called the Streak. The Streak will be offered by carriers in some places and will include telephony in addition to content consumption and creation features. It comes to the US next month as an unlocked device selling for $500 putting it directly in competition with the iPad. (Right off the bat that puts the Streak at a disadvantage in the US. Just ask Nokia how easy it is to sell unlocked $500 devices here.)

Dell Streak Review

Dell Streak Review

Since the first rumors many months back, to Michael Dell flashing his prototype in the street and then a few quiet appearances at trade shows, the Dell Streak has taken its time coming to market. Running Android on a broad, eye-catching 5-inch display, there's little like it on the market and it's been an attention-grabber ever since. Yes, the Streak is a device that certainly prompts questions - among geeks and everyday users alike - but the one we set out to answer is simple: is it any good? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.
