AirCast Chromecast “any video” app released by Koush in Beta

Earlier this year Google's Chromcast device became (rather quickly) one of their biggest hardware hits, selling out not long after it was first put on sale. Almost as quickly, developer Koushik Dutta began work on prospective apps for the device, aiming to expand the functionality of the miniature HDMI-friendly dongle to allow more than Google's own services and a handful of 3rd party apps. Here Koush releases the beta of the first of a set of apps: AirCast - able to play any video to Chromecast.

Chromecast support expands: Bitcasa, Cheapcast, and Google’s hiring spree

As the device known as Chromecast gains steam, an ecosystem is being expanded around it. Google's intended purpose for Chromecast was to make connecting Google apps and services - not to mention their Android software on devices galore - to displays of all sizes, specifically in the television realm. Just weeks after the initial launch (and subsequent sell-out) of the Chromecast device, it's not just Google that's expanding its efforts in the "Cast" arena.

Chromecast ship date confusion heightens pressure for second wave

This month Google's newest (and tiniest) device to hit the market is seeing some confusion in shipping times through 3rd party sources after the first wave has sold out. This HDMI-friendly dongle was introduced on July 24th as a sort of reboot for the ill-fated Nexus Q which had its production cut short just weeks after its initial introduction. With a $35 price tag attached, Chromecast was set for success, it would seem, as the device sold out in less than a day.

However, while we wait for more streaming services to add support for the Chromecast, CyangoenMod developer Koushik Dutta has a temporary fix, following up with a similar update he posted a couple days ago.

Chromecast turnkey app for all videos in development by Koush

Developer Koushik Dutta is creating at least one app for Android devices aimed at allowing any and all video to be "cast" from a mobile device's gallery to Chromecast. The Chromecast device is currently sold out in many areas of the internet and in stores across the country due to its relatively low cost and super-basic functionality with essentially every modern television (with an HDMI port, that is). Koush is aiming to expand this device's abilities from YouTube and Netflix out to a whole lot wider set of media bits and pieces in the very near future.

Chromecast to gain Redbox Instant and Vimeo, others to follow

Google Chromecast was a nice surprise that Google rolled out earlier this month, making a solid attempt to find its way into the streaming entertainment industry (again) with a $35 dongle and simple setup. Though cheap, the device has run into criticism over its lack of content, which is presently limited to Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play. That will be changing soon, however, as Redbox Instant and Vimeo gear up to add support for the device, and others consider following.
