The living room has proved to be a challenge for Google. The company which has been so successful in dominating so many of the screens we interact with on a daily basis - our computers, phones, and tablets - has perversely struggled for that most traditional of displays, the humble TV. Google TV was flabby and confusing; the axe fell on the Nexus Q before it even went on sale. Only the Chromecast has had any measure of success, and yet just when we thought Google might have a strategy, along comes a different platform again, Android TV. Running first on the Nexus Player, but set to spread to smart TVs from numerous manufacturers, it’s Google’s fourth lounge reboot, but is it really necessary?

Chromecast stops by FCC, 5GHz WiFi may be coming

google’s Chromecast is a tiny wonder, and has claimed the “HDMI 1” port on many TVs across the globe. Our favorite app-to-TV dongle is getting a bit of an upgrade it seems, sopping by the FCC to show off some new stuff. The overall makeup looks the same, hardware-wise, but there’s one small uptick that will have some existing users grabbing a new one. Adopting the 5GHz WiFi standard in addition to the 2.4GHz signal is going to make streaming a pure joy.

Chromecast app seeing Backdrop update for personalization

If you don’t have a Chromecast, you might want to pick one up shortly after reading this. Google’s incredible little dongle has added Backdrop support. The app, which will see an update over the next few days, will now let you customize the information shown on your TV when you’re not binge-watching Game of Thrones on HBO GO or Using Netflix to waste away a Saturday afternoon. Previously announced at Google I/O, Backdrop adds a lot more personality to your Chromecast.
