I’ll be the first to admit that when Blu-ray first launched, I was skeptical. I wasn’t sure if the new technology was a worthwhile investment for someone like me. Sure, it delivered more storage and higher-quality video and audio, but I simply saw it as another way to take my hard-earned cash for little benefit over DVD.
Sony has quietly begun sales of an integrated HDTV and PlayStation, though the BRAVIA KDL22PX300 does only give you a PS2 rather than a PS3. Available in the UK for a bargain £199.95 ($312), the 22-inch set runs at 720p-friendly 1366 x 768 resolution and has four HDMI ports and three USB ports (two of which are apparently USB 1.1).
The Nokia N8's photography skills are already prompting plenty of discussion, but one modder has instead concentrated on squeezing out some extra performance rather than arguing over the standard results. Notorious Symbian-lover hyperX has already managed to coax the N8 into shooting 720p video at 30fps rather than the default 25fps, and he's also worked some magic on the smartphone's still images.
We can probably safely assume at this point that tablets are here to stay. At least for awhile. And considering the effort that Archos has already put into the Android-based "tablet" market, there's no surprise here that they've just pulled the curtain off five (5!) brand new tablet devices, all featuring Google's mobile Operating System. Ranging in sizes and prices, as well as plenty of Archos-based "improvements" to the User Interface, meet the family of new Archos tablets.
If you've been waiting patiently for Verizon to push out the Android 2.2. Froyo update for the HTC Droid Incredible, not taking the easy option and opting for one of the unofficial ROMs that are circulating, then today could be the day your high standards are rewarded. Verizon has pinged us to let us know that they're pushing out Froyo for the Droid Incredible as an OTA update, complete with Adobe Flash Player 10.1.
Samsung has outed its latest digital camera, and the ST80 packs WiFi along with its 14.2-megapixel sensor. As with other Samsung wireless cameras, the ST80 can offload its photos via email or through direct upload to Facebook, Picasa, YouTube or PhotoBucket, and the company even throws in a Boingo WiFi hotspot account too; alternatively there's DLNA streaming support.
Sony has confirmed that 3D gaming on the PS3 will be limited to 720p HD, rather than full 1080p HD, by virtue of the nature of the 3D system the company is using. Speaking at the Develop conference, Sony's Simon Benson said that while 1080p 3D movies would play on the PS3, the need for high framerates - in the region of 60fps - for 3D gaming meant that resolution would have to suffer if gameplay wasn't to be jerky.
Motorola's Milestone XT720, the 3.7-inch keyboard-free sequel to the European Motorola Milestone, is set to hit the UK on Monday July 19th according to retailer Clove. The Android 2.1 smartphone packs an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and a Xenon flash, together with 720p HD video recording and a mini-HDMI port for hooking up your nearest HDTV.
Apple are preparing an iPod touch refresh with a 5-megapixel camera, front-facing webcam for WiFi FaceTime video calls, and the same accelerometer and gyroscope updates as in the iPhone 4, claims UK retailer John Lewis. The predictions - sourced, John Lewis told Electricpig, from "noises we're hearing from suppliers" - suggest that the traditional September refresh of Apple's touchscreen PMP will see it targeted as an all-round multimedia device for the youth market.
It's a slow news day, so lets dabble our feet in the murky rumor waters for a while and take a look at what we're told is the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9200. The tipped successor to the Galaxy S, and supposedly due in early 2011, according to the talk circulating Russian forum itrans the Galaxy S2 is said to have a whopping 4.3-inch 1,280 x 720 Super AMOLED display with around 340 pixels per inch, certainly intruding into Apple's Retina Display realm.
Meanwhile there's also supposedly a 2GHz CPU paired with 1GB of RAM and a 4GB ROM, together with 32GB of flash storage and a microSD card slot. The camera is said to be 8-megapixels capable of not just 720p but 1080p Full HD video recording, and the OS to be Android "Gingerbread" which we've heard is expected to drop in Q4 this year. Connectivity includes WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0, while there's also A-GPS, an accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity and ambient light sensors.
