Samsung SUHD TV one-ups Ultra HD with uber-colors

What comes after Ultra HD when you're trying to sell people new TVs? If you're Samsung, the answer is SUHD, when the added "S" somewhat nebulous in its abbreviating but kept for the firm's most high-end models. It's not just a name and some sleek beveled edges, however, with Samsung turning to nanocrystal semiconductors to improve picture quality, contrast, brightness, and color, even running at the same 4K resolution as last year's sets. Meanwhile, under the hood of each SUHD is a new Smart TV platform powered by Tizen.

Sharp rolls in Android TV-based sets, pixel-splitting monster

Sharp is not ready to be left out of the TV craze, and have announced a new set that will come in three massive sizes. The Sharp UE30 will arrive to your home or office (and possibly stadium) in 60, 70 and 80-inch screen sizes. The 4K capable TVs also have Sharp’s upscaling tech that fits SD and HD content into a roomy 4K box. The Sharp TVs are also Android TV-ready, and use the platform to integrate apps and services.

LG already showed us its 4K Ultra HD TV range for CES 2015, and now it's the turn of some eye-catching monitors to get a shot at the limelight. The trio of unusual, 21:9 UltraWide displays are targeting gamers, graphics designers, and even financial traders, with a variety of curved form-factors and stacked stands; they're also joined by a fourth screen, promising greater-than-Ultra-HD resolution that, while a little short on an iMac with Retina Display, still edges ahead of most 4K panels out there.

If there's one thing we expect from the Consumer Electronics Show, it's massive TVs, and LG is already getting the big set hype started with its new 4K line-up. The company's 2015 Ultra HD range will debut Wide Color LED, LG's latest finagling of pixel technology that uses various different phosphor-based LEDs for the promise of better color depth and pictures that are more lifelike. Vizio showed off its budget-friendly P-Series 4K Ultra HD televisions at the beginning of the year, and this past September it rolled out pricing and availability for the sets. The P-Series brought with it some smart features that could utilize its ultra high resolution, and now in time for the holiday season the maker has announced an inbound update that will bring more content apps -- with support for UHD -- to the models, including access to Amazon Instant Video and more.

LG to introduce TVs with quantum dot technology at CES 2015

LG Electronics has announced plans to reveal a new 4k Ultra HD television using quantum dot technology at CES 2015. By incorporating the new technology, LG says its new televisions give consumers a wider color palette than previously available, as well as better color saturation in comparison to ordinary LCD televisions. In addition, the new televisions using quantum dot technology will be available some time in 2015. Says LG's In-kyu Lee, "Quantum dot's vibrant and vivid color reproduction capabilities brings LG’s LCD TVs to the next level when it comes to picture quality."

Amazon Prime Instant Video now streaming in 4K

Vimeo may not be interested in 4K streaming, but Amazon is. The online shopping giant also does a lot of streaming, and they’ve now announced that 4K is coming to your TV screen. The current crop of movies available to streaming 4K is limited, but if you’re a fan of Amazon Prime Instant Video, this is great news, and hopefully the start of something new. Amazon is joined by Netflix as one of the few streaming content provider currently showcasing content in 4K.

Vimeo is making 4K available — for download

If you’re fond of 4K, we don’t blame you. The intense resolution makes for some cinematic brilliance, and new avenues for viewing 4K are popping up all the time. New monitors and TVs can display 4K, and service providers like Netflix are working to distribute it broadly. Now, Vimeo is getting in on the 4K action, but not as you might think. Videographers can upload 4K content, but we the consumer can’t stream it. Vimeo is offering 4K, but it’s download-only.
