AT&T Sony Xperia ion drops June 24 for $100 [UPDATED]

Sony's Xperia ion will hit AT&T on June 24, it has been confirmed, with the Android 2.3 smartphone priced at $99.99 with a new, two-year agreement. Announced back at CES in January, the Xperia ion is fronted by a 4.55-inch 1280 x 720 display and runs Gingerbread on a 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon S3 chipset. Read The Full Story

AT&T Motorola Dinara could drop imminently as Atrix 3 LTE

Evidence of a new AT&T branded Motorola smartphone believed to be the successor to the Atrix 2 has cropped up in the wild, with the handset - codenamed "Dinara" - believed to be headed to the carrier's LTE network. Packing a 720p HD display and running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, according to The Verge's tipster, it's estimated that the phone could hit AT&T's 4G airwaves as soon as late July. Verizon, BMW, Toyota and others form 4G car alliance

Verizon is hoping to get your next car online, launching the 4G Venture Forum for Connected Cars to push LTE integration - along with the cloud, mobile content and more - into dashboards. A partnership with BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota, along with links to MIT, the 4G Venture Forum for Connected Cars "will collaborate and explore ways to deliver connectivity to vehicles of all types, by leveraging open standards and discussing ways to accelerate development of the 4G LTE ecosystem across automotive OEMs, suppliers, device manufacturers, application developers and content publishers." Apple agrees to $2.2m iPad 4G fine

Apple has agreed to a AU$2.25m ($2.2m) fine in Australia over allegedly misleading new iPad buyers over the tablet's 4G compatibility, though the judge presiding the case could still increase that amount. Both Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission asked Justice Bromberg to approve the fine, the Sydney Morning Herald reports, but the judge is demanding confidential iPad sales information and details of Apple's finances before he agrees. O2 and Vodafone partner on infrastructure for 4G future

UK carriers O2 and Vodafone have announced a new collaboration on 2G, 3G and 4G infrastructure, which will see the companies pool basic network infrastructure in an attempt to speed LTE's arrival. Under the scheme - which is also expected to save both carriers money in the long run - O2 and Vodafone will each continue running independent spectrum and competing services, sharing maintenance duties for the basic hardware and decommissioning unnecessary base-station sites. Verizon Galaxy S III pre-orders open for early July delivery

Verizon has thrown open the pre-order doors for the Samsung Galaxy S III, though buyers of the new third-gen flagship shouldn't expect to see their new toy until early next month. Apple's decision to rebrand the new iPad as the "iPad WiFi + Cellular" and drop the allegedly confusing 4G reference will not save it from a court appearance with the Australian consumer rights watchdog. New US MVNO Voyager Mobile almost got its unlimited voice, text and data service up and running today, but has claimed a "malicious network attack" has forced it to postpone the launch. Apple rebrands iPad 4G after LTE furore

Apple has quietly rebranded its new iPad WiFi + 4G in response to continued pressure from regulators concerned that buyers were being misled over the data speeds the third-gen tablet could achieve. The tablet, now know as the new iPad WiFi + Cellular, was capable of connecting to LTE networks from Verizon and AT&T in the US, but incompatible with 4G networks elsewhere in the world. Apple had faced increasing scrutiny in Australia, the UK and elsewhere over whether its branding was confusing and potentially misinforming would-be tableteers as to what their new gadget was capable of.
