Every thought that gaming on your iPhone or iPod touch is simply too discrete, and that not enough of the people around you realize you’re playing shooter games rather than responding to Very Important Emails? apptoyz has just the thing, with its appBlaster gun: designed to hold your iPhone and give you a something to hold on to while you play Alien Attack [iTunes link], the gun chassis works much as we’ve seen Wiimote peripherals do in the past.

Battery-free, the appBlaster relies on a pair of manual pads that flip up when you pull the trigger and push against the display, mimicking the touch of your fingers. Reloading the gun is done by physically cocking it, thanks to the smartphone’s motion sensors.

As for the game itself, Alien Attack uses augmented reality to overlay shootable aliens around whatever room you’re currently in. The appBlaster is available to pre-order in the UK now, priced at £19.99 ($32), with deliveries expected from July 6. More details in the video below.

Vincent Nguyen is going to be repping us and reporting from Barcelona Spain for the Mobile World Congress this year. In case you didn’t know, the show was formerly called 3GSM, but basically this is the CES of the mobile industry, sure, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung, Motorola and the rest were all at CES, but this is the show where they’ll be letting the new gear loose.

For the full coverage, you’ll have to hit up PhoneMag, but we’ll be doing a daily recap of the latest and greatest at the end of each day here on SlashGear. Vincent is headed to Spain tomorrow morning, and I feel for him, that long of a flight in coach would make me want to kill myself, but he does it for you, the readers.

So, stay tuned for the latest and greatest coverage, and if you were considering buying a new mobile phone, this would definitely be the week to hold off on that thought. The show doesn’t technically start until the 11th, but as with CES, there is a lot of Pre-Show press events to cover, PhoneMag is at this link, and their Mobile World Congress 2008 coverage can be found here, and the pre-show coverage has already started so go ahead and check that out.

Mobile City Online has a preorder going on for the North American edition of the Nokia N95 8GB with an expected arrival date of February 15th next year. This means that we could be seeing the announcement at next years Mobile World Congress.

The price they have listed is $800 which is pretty hefty considering what an 8GB iPhone goes for. But if you prefer the S60 mobile OS or you just like the other features of the Nokia, then by all means, spend twice the cost of an iPhone on one device, the upside is that you don’t have to sign a contract with the Nokia device, its all yours from the beginning.

Stefan over at IntoMobile highly recommends you just pick up the current version of the N95 and throw an 8GB microSD card into it instead of buying the new model. But the new model will probably sell like hotcakes (maybe not like hotcakes, their like a dollar or something like that, these are like 800 times more expensive).

Noduled-keyboard aside, the q60 is a 3G HSDPA, Windows Mobile 6-toting chunk of mobile media. A 2-megapixel, auto-focus camera, 2.5-inch screen, Bluetooth and USB 2.0 round out the features, and it’s powered by an Intel PXA270 520 MHz processor.

The q60 will apparently be available with optional Mobile TV and GPS attachments.

Am I the only one that thinks that the entire market is moving away from so-called “smart phones” and moving towards more of a mobile PC? It seems like the focus of phones is more towards leaving the laptop at home and using your phone for many of your needs. Granted, I know that is still a long way off, but we’re getting closer to that every day. Take the new Quark smartphone concept from Nvidia. Something big must be happening to get them to put some focus on making a phone.

They just introduced the Quark smartphone concept, and so far, it looks great. It has a sleek 3-inch touchscreen, which doesn’t leave room for a lot of buttons. Which is good, because it only has a power/hold switch. It seems to be capable of plenty;videos, music, even a digital photo album and a 3MP camera.

Curiously, if you look closely at the pictures, it would appear that it is running windows. From the start bar at the bottom, I’m going to just guess that’s not Windows Mobile 6 either.

This of course is powered by their GoForce 6100 chip which is a hybrid CPU/GPU. We’re not sure if this will ever make it to production, or if this is just a way to show of the capabilities of their 6100 chip. With that much horsepower able to be tucked away in a cell phone, just imagine what you could do. I think it’s safe to say that the phone revolution is here.

Arne Hess has taken his hands to 3GSM and let’s all be thankful for that – if he hadn’t, we wouldn’t have this hands-on report of the Motorola Q q9. Thankfully he did more than merely palpate it like a blind man touching up a nun; no, he answered my first question: is the keyboard any good?

Turns out, he reckons it’s easier than the original Q to type on. Now I loved the look of the Q’s tic-tac keys and clean layout, but after a while they got a bit tiring on the fingertips; this new keyboard doesn’t look so cute, but if you can peck out emails without having domed impressions bruised into your digits then it’s an improvement in my book.

As Arne spots, however, where’s the front-mounted camera for video calls? Not that many people actually make video calls, but it’d be nice to see all the same.

LG made a name for itself in the phone industry last year with it’s Chocolate phone. With new products like the Prada, they’re ready to compete with the best of them. One of the latest phones that they introduced at 3GSM this week is the KS10. And we managed to snap some pictures while we were there.

The highlights include HSDPA connectivity, allowing for download speeds of up to 1.8Mbps. They put that speed to good use by allowing high-quality streaming TV. They’ve also got mp3 support if you’re not big on TV on the small screen.

Over all, it looks like another stylish phone from LG. It is a slider phone, so that they can maximize the screen size. Personally, I’ve always liked slider phones. Makes more room for the screen, and my fat fingers tend to have issues dialing on a touchscreen.

These days it’s all about content on the go. Music, news, TV, you name it. Samsung has been working hard on an update to their Ultra Video F500 so that you can get the best in mobile TV.

Their new F510 has quite a few new features over their old F500. One of the biggest new features is it’s ability to play DivX files. This will make it the first phone to have such capabilities. You can also swivel the phone around so that it can stand freely, allowing you to watch your video without holding on to it.

I’m on the road a lot, and I can view some media content on my phone, but I just can’t get myself excited about watching media on such a small screen. Although, with a 2.4” screen, the Samsung F510 might be worth looking at.

What a great slogan by LG, 3G for All! I wish I could say the same for my fellow in US where 3G are more like 3 Where? But enough about my jealousy of those 3G zoned users. The LG-KU250 will be available from twelve of the largest mobile operators in the world.

The phone will support GSM Tri Band and UMTS under WCDMA network. Sporting 1.76” LCD with 176X220 resolutions, 3G Video Telephony, Dual Camera (1.3Megapixel + VGA), Easy Internet Access up to 386kbps, Audio codecs such as MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WMA, Micro SD Slot, and speaker phone.

“LG is very excited about collaborating with the GSMA to lead the ongoing evolution and deployment of 3G technology worldwide,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Through this partnership, we will bring all people closer to new mobile capabilities and they will benefit from higher-quality wireless multimedia 3G services. LG will provide them with attractive and feature-rich 3G devices while at the same time breaking price barriers for subscribers in the global market.”

Back in January, when salivating slightly over ASUS’ ScreenDUO SideShow display, I interrupted my oral perspiration to wonder this:

“Wouldn’t it be easier to have a constantly updated cellphone relying on the processing power of your laptop together with the convenience of something most people carry round all the time?”

Well it looks like the good people at i-mate have been listening, or at the very least that we’re thinking on the same wavelength (I’ll expect my consultancy fee cheque to be in the post, guys), because their Ultimate line of WM6 smartphones (which thankfully won’t just come in the JayLenoChinphone guise but as a range of different handsets) will come with software that not only enables just that, SideShow functionality using the cellphone as wireless display, but also remote Windows Media Centre control and media-previewing.

Demonstrated at 3GSM over a WiFi link, but apparently equally at home using 3G, a dock with video out as well as keyboard, monitor and mouse ports will mean the Ultimate range can serve not only as a mobile companion but also a laptop and PMP replacement. I can see this being really useful for hotel rooms, when there’s nothing on TV.

Expect the Ultimate range to be out by June 2007.

There’s been a lot of conflicting reporting about the LG Prada’s OS, fuelled by some reported sightings of the handset running Windows Mobile 6 rather than the Flash UI previously seen in photos. Well, Ahbao of SlashGear-sister-site SlashPhone has been prowling the mean aisles of 3GSM and scored some images of the WM6 version.

According to deeply reticent LG reps this is not the final casing for the phone, and when pushed they refused to say whether the handset will be the commercial version of the Prada handset, another variant in the line or a completely different model altogether.

Small, with a joystick and two discrete buttons on the front, the cellphone’s crowning glory is HSDPA.

We’ve seen a lot of new phones from 3GSM this year, most of them have new features and operating systems that we just can’t wait to play with. Possio however, has me intrigued by their new GRETA GSM Fax & Printer.

Don’t let the name fool you, it’s a phone. From the looks of it, not a very comfortable phone to hold, but a phone nevertheless. It has a printer, scanner, copier, fax, and cell phone all rolled up into one unit.

I’m not sure that they’ll find a large market for these. The biggest thing about cell phones is that they need to be easily carried around. No one wants to carry around a separate laptop bag just for their cell phone.

Some of you may have read about the Pocket Surfer phone from DataWind back in 2004. It raised a lot of eyebrows, and questions. Mostly “when will it be launched?” Well, DataWind is back with their PocketSurfer 2.

The big news about this phone is it’s uncanny ability to download webpages in their original layout, in about 7-9 seconds per page. If this is true, I think I’ve found a new way to keep connected.

Of course the usual questions will of course be asked again. Only this time they’ll include “What happened to the first one?”

More after the jump.

It looks to be a good size to hold in your hand, and the keyboard layout is simple. We did manage to snag a shot of the specs for you to enjoy. Highlights include Windows Mobile 6, a 200MHz TI processor, and up to 6.5 hours of talk time.

I can’t wait to get my hands on one to try out the voice command and see if it will stand up to they hype. I can definitely see an advantage in dictating emails on the road

And so, smarting from the craptastic design efforts of ASUS, we turn our beady 3GSM-eye to i-mate. Now I’ll confess early on that I’m in two minds about i-mate’s showing this year – their main design theme seems to be “gaudy”, including one phone they’re calling ‘Ultimate’ but I’ll forever think of as the i-mate JayLenoChinphone, but there’s a thread of sober sexiness in the shape of the JAQ 4. Keep reading for photos, then make up your own mind…

The new colourful SPL range, above, smacks a little of Motorola-style brand-broadening desperation. Full specs are here (let’s just say they’ve not changed much other than the colour), but highlights remain the 12mm profile, 2-megapixel camera and quad-band GSM.

Check out the rest of them after the cut…

Next up is the so-called Ultimate (or, as I said above, the i-mate JayLenoChinphone), a monstrous slab of gold-coloured vulgarity. Seriously, the specs could be fantastic but why why why?

Finally, the one phone out of the bunch that I might consider giving pocket room to, the JAQ 4. Full specs can be found here, with highlights being WM6, quad-band GSM with EDGE, WiFi in b and g flavours, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, a full QWERTY keyboard and 2-megapixel camera with autofocus.

The photo above is not in fact a gold-lamé wearing whale creeping up on the JAQ 4, but actually a size-comparison between it and the Ultimate. I’m shuddering as I type.

So Sprint has only just got the Q, and Motorola are cocking a snook at them and saying “look, we’ve developed the Q gsm and Q q9″ the cheeky swines. Still, not being in the US means I owe nothing to Sprint, so let’s forget about them for the moment and look at what goodies Moto has delivered for us.

First off, the Q gsm (left) is an upgrade and re-casing of the previous model, bringing it up to date OS-wise courtesy of Windows Mobile 6 as well as quad-band GSM and EDGE data support. The Q q9 (right) keeps the old case but throws the lovely HSDPA into the mix, as well as that all-important quad-band GSM and EDGE. More details after the cut.

The Q q9 is PlaysForSure compatible, either streaming it over the air thanks to that high-speed data connection, from on-board memory (all 256MB of it) or via the microSD expansion slot. USB 2.0 makes transferring tracks easy, and there’s A2DP Bluetooth for wireless stereo headphones.

I’m pretty sure the people at Nokia are scratching their heads about all the verbiage surrounding Motorola’s new Z8 slider with its “Kick Slide” - after all, wasn’t their 1996 Nokia 8110 similarly curved to cater to the typical swooping jawline? Ancestry aside, the Z8 is a pretty nice step up from the run of the mill V3-rebranding the company has been pumping out lately, with headline features including HSDPA and – a first for Motorola – using the Symbian OS.

With one fell swoop, then, Motorola should silence a whole lot of their critics who bemoan the (admittedly dire) OS previous phones have been saddled with. The 2.2-inch QVGA screen and A2DP stereo Bluetooth support should ice that metaphorical kidney too.

The Z8 comes with 90MB of internal memory, boosted by a microSD slot, and is a mere 0.6-inches thick. A typical 2-megapixel camera and 5hr talk-time are par for the course.

Should be available first-half of 2007; look for it in the hands of fashionistas, hookers and pontiffs.

Rollable displays have been something of a mainstay of science fiction and futurology articles, perhaps because there’s something undeniably cool about taking a product we’re all familiar with – in this case paper – and giving it a super-sexy high-tech makeover. However while there have been numerous prototypes shown at trade fairs and expos, up until now our e-books have been resolutely stiff. Well, that’s due to change thanks to Polymer Vision and their READIUS display. SlashGear was there to have a good play, as well as take these exclusive photos.

Fitting a five-inch monochrome screen into svelte chassis takes some doing, and it’s been a three year labour of love for the Eindhoven-based company. Now they’re ramping up production at a new UK plant, using Thin Film Transistor equipment which gives the high-contrast, high-reflectivity display an e-book friendly 16-levels of grey. Currently screen refreshes take 1-2 seconds, meaning it’s not really suitable for video, but the super-clear text and the fact that it only consumes power when changing the display, not for maintaining an image, makes it ideal for a dynamically updated text-news source.

It might look science-fiction, but Italians will be able to enjoy the READIUS sometime this year – Polymer Vision have cut a deal with Telecom Italia to market the device along with the network’s personalised news services. A built-in SIM card slot means it can be constantly connected to an EDGE/UMTS network as well as DVB-H IP data-casting, and take advantage of e-mail, news, location sensitive maps and ebooks, as well as user-loaded information on the 4GB of internal storage transferred via mini-USB.

Audio is also catered for, with podcast and music downloads supported. Future models should be able to display colour and live video. Navigation is carried out through a touch-sensitive LED array, designed to be used single-handedly, and battery life should be an astounding ten days on average.

Telecom Italia will be sole providers in Italy, while Polymer Vision themselves will market it elsewhere in the world.
