Monster Hunter Generations, special edition Nintendo 3DS gets US release date

Almost eight months after its original Japanese release, the latest entry in Capcom's action-RPG series Monster Hunter is coming to the US on the Nintendo 3DS. Titled Monster Hunter Generations, the new game will maintain the series' trademark gameplay of four players teaming up to hunt and defeat massive creatures including dinosaurs and dragons, all while searching for better weapons and armor.

Nintendo made a limited SNES-themed 3DS but only for Japan

Nintendo fans, you've likely already heard the news from yesterday's Direct livestream that some of the best games from the Super Nintendo console are coming to the New 3DS handheld. But Japanese version of the announcement also had something extra: a limited edition New 3DS XL featuring a Super Famicom-themed design, complete with the colored buttons for A, B, X, and Y. The Super Famicom was Japan's domestic name for the SNES, which looked a tad different from the one on our shores.

This week Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke up this week on the future of handheld gaming machines for the USA. Speaking without giving direct confirmation to writer Stephen Totilo of Kotaku, Fils-Aime suggested that "some special SKUs might show up", this after speaking about North America and the lack of a release of both new 3DS handhelds to this environment. Could it be that the Japanese market's desire for the 3DS XL and non-desire for a smaller device was informing Nintendo on the USA?

Nintendo has further detailed the changes in its new 3DS and 3DS XL, including how existing 3DS owners can upgrade to the improved consoles, along with some of the limitations of the new features.
