If you’ve read up on our coverage of the camera gear group called 3ality Technica, you know there’s a lot going on behind the scenes when it comes to supporting the cameras that capture the biggest-name films in the industry. Elements, a division of 3ality Technica, has launched a brand new product this week by the name of Micron. This “Micron Standard Line” is a set of accessories created specifically for digital cameras that are small and lightweight. The first solution they’re releasing is a set of hardware made specifically for the Sony NEX-FS700 – that camera having been revealed just earlier this year, mind you.

This first selection of hardware support for the Sony NEX-FS700 includes the Micron BridgePlate, the Micron Dovetail, and the Micron Sony FS700 Riser. Each of these units will both provide complete protection and improve the adaptability and mobility of the camera in the field.

Similar solutions are being prepared by Elements for the Sony F3, Sony NEX-FS100, RED Epic, RED Scarlet, Canon 1D/5D/7D, all DSLR lines and small format S35 cameras. All Micron Standard Line products are made of a selection of high quality materials including such gems as aircraft-grade aluminum tubing – used for powerful core weight without sacrifices in weight.

Stephen Pizzo, SVP of 3ality Technica spoke up on the future of the project this week as well:

“In the same way that these small cameras represent a game change for content
creators, allowing them to shoot professional cinema quality content with cameras
priced under $20,000, the Micron Standard Line marks a turning point in dedicating
the Elements design and manufacturing expertise to provide the same physical
performance of their larger counter-parts. 3ality Technica’s Elements is dedicated
to ensuring the benefits of smaller cameras is considered in everything we do.” – Pizzo

Today is the big day in London for those anxiously awaiting the very first showing of the sci-fi epic Prometheus, and we’re right there along with them on the red – or blue, rather – carpet! This event is taking place in Leicester Square with stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, and Noomi Rapace as well as the director of the film Ridley Scott joining in on the fun tonight (or today, if you’re joining us from the USA.) We’ll be viewing the film as well as speaking with film producers, workers, and random Prometheus affiliates as they walk the carpet before the big show.

This premiere will take place first here in the UK, opening to the public Friday, while the United States will have to wait a bit longer – June 8th to be exact. The film itself has been covered several times by SlashGear from angles quite diverse, starting off with our interview with the folks behind the gear that made 3D a possibility for the film, 3ality Technica‘s Stephen Pizzo.

This week we sat down with 3D rig and software company 3ality Technica’s Stephen Pizzo to discuss their newest products and how they played a part in the filming of recent giant Hollywood films as Prometheus. Turns out, Pizzo (3ality Technica’s senior vice president) told us, it was Head Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski that convinced Ridley Scott that 3D was a possibility for a film such as the Alien prequel Prometheus – and that with the gear that was available today, they could film the movie the with the same ease and precision they’d be afforded with 2D equipment. In fact, 3D was made possible with essentially no extra effort on the part of the film crew; read on for the first part of the full SlashGear interview.

We asked Pizzo what his team did for the 3D film industry as far as gear for 3D filming and productions. [Have a peek at our report on the new Helix 3D camera rig to see what they're presenting this week at NAB.] The products created by Element Technica, the group that late last year was combined with 3ality Digital to create the super-group known as 3ality Technica we know now, was instrumental in making all Prometheus 3D sequences a reality. Literally instrumental, no less, as it’s 3ality Technica rigs that the crew’s cameras sit on throughout the film.

SlashGear: For larger 3D productions like Prometheus, are you ever called to be on-site to help with instructions on how to use these rigs with the film’s crew?

Pizzo: Not exactly – especially with Prometheus, Underworld, or Oz, what we did was we worked with the director of photography and his crew – the people that he’s just working with, and we train them in the operation of the equipment. We’ll provide as much support as they require, but typically once they’ve had a little bit of training just before the production starts – once they’re up and running – they need very little from us. Now if someone wants us on set, we’re happy to go and provide whatever support is necessary, but it really hasn’t been necessary.

SG: Did anyone from the 3ality step on set for Prometheus?

P: I was on the set of Prometheus a little bit in the beginning because Dariusz Wolski came to me personally and the requirement he gave me was – he said he had made a promise to Ridley Scott that if he used our gear that he would be able to move at the speed of 2D production. And he would be able to treat the rig itself as just cameras – since that’s essentially what they are. I visited the set a couple of times early on in production to make sure they were getting exactly what they wanted and they were, they were very successful.

Above: 3ality Technica’s Atom rig
SG: Which products ended up working for them?

P: They used five Atom rigs. Four of them were configured with [RED] Epic cameras and zoom lenses set up in studio mode where they can go on a dolly or a tripod. The fifth one was working with Epic cameras and fine lenses and was set up on a steadicam.

They had the four studio cams working continuously and they would bring in the steadicam rig as required. The crew moved the rigs around just as if they were regular cameras, and other than the addition of a convergence puller for that shoot, it looked very much like a standard crew compilation.

SG: From what I understand, Ridley Scott actually took a little bit of convincing to actually get onboard with the whole 3D experience – did he see how your products were working and end up being immediately on-board?

P: I wasn’t involved in any of the discussions with Ridley, that was really Dariusz Wolski so I don’t want to speculate – what I know is what Darius told me which was that he wanted to deliver to Ridley the best experience possible with 3D, and that’s why he was coming with us.

Above you’ll see another view of the Atom rig with RED camera gear installed. Expect great things (if you haven’t already begun to do so) from both 3ality Technica and the film Prometheus, opening June 8th, 2012 in theaters everywhere. We’ll have the second segment of our 3ality Technica interview soon!

The folks at 3ality Technica have revealed their next-generation stereoscopic 3D system Helix to further their dominance in the Smart 3D market. This device is effectively an ultra-precise rig which allows two cameras to be aligned with sub-pixel accuracy, 3ality Technica doing this in a way that also allows the whole setup to bring a 2D shooting schedule (relatively fast) to the 3D filming world (generally too slow to realistically work with in a real Hollywood-deadline environment.) The Helix is the newest product made by 3ality Technica and is made specifically work with the rest of their 3D suite of products.

For those of you looking at the image above still completely confused about what it’s made for – don’t worry, you’re not alone. This equipment is not made for your everyday hobby camera aficionado. Instead it, like it’s close relatives also created by 3ality Technica, are made for big-name productions spanning Hollywood Films, sports, and music concerts. The Helix is made from some fabulously well-picked materials: magnesium, carbon fiber and aluminum, and is being compared to two previous products 3ality Technica has already produced, the TS-5 and the Atom: both of them pictured below:

The TS-5 is product known for its precision and automation abilities, as well as its relatively small size – just 17 pounds on its own. The Atom is also a compact setup, this time being called upon for its configurability and user-friendliness. These factors have all be integrated into the Helix, a product made to showcase the skills of both of the best of the best in 3ality Technica. This product is the first to showcase the full power of the company which up until recently was two separate entities: 3ality Digital and Element Technica.

In late 2011, these two companies came together to wholly dominate the world of Smart 3D, the greatness of their combination being showcased here with the Helix and the software (and hardware) it’s made to work with best. 3ality Technica is also introducing the IntelleSuite enhanced control and automation software set this week, IntelleCam, IntelleCal, and IntelleMatte working with the Helix to create what 3ality Technica says is “the most intelligent system of professional 3D camera platforms.”

Of course this all needs a bit of brain power behind it, so 3ality Technica is of course showcasing their SIP 2100 system along with the whole setup. The SIP (Stereo Image Processors) is “the definitive” stereo video processing device for High Definition digital video streams. These processors are made to work all over, from production to post-production to distribution environments and back again. These processors working with the software and the hardware introduced this week will have 3D movie makers leaping for joy in the near future – you just wait!
