I think Samsung got it wrong at a couple of points.

Yes, the price is high. And that's for everybody, not just people looking for a new toy. I they don´t want to cannibalize the Galaxy S fine, but they shouldn't expect them to fly off the shelves when they are seated next to a bigger screen with an even bigger apple logo for a hundred euros less.

and tech aficionados would have an issue with the unresolved lag that plagues the I-9000 (unresolved without rooting, I mean), and the fear of slow system updates.

Me, I'm just waiting for the Adam and it's Pixel Qi screen. Then I will add e-reader to the list of gadgets I won't have to carry around.

Ya know, i think Nook Color will be the best eReader/almost tablet like currently. @ $249, it's very attractive. And they said that BN will have its own market place soon.

Huawei S7 @ $299 does a great job but it comes with a few shortfalls: battery life, Skype not working (maybe it's just me), can't automagically discover new Wifi and a tab heavy after using it for ~ 1 week but other than that it does everything it advertises.

Samsung has made some crazy mistakes. They come out products after Apple but pricing Apple-like lol Tablet is not the only product that not selling well for them. Remember the lightest 13.3" notebook X360? They even disconued it. It's a shame as it's a great lapdog!

For the most part I agree with you, but you're wrong about Samsung being less well know as a computer manufacturer than Nokia, Rim or MS (what Palm, it's HP now) -- I mean come on, Nokia and RiM are mobile phone manufacturers and MS a software company primarily.

As to Android, well I'd take Maemo anytime, but it's running only on ONE (1) discontinued phone, so if I want an ARM tablet Android is the only acceptable option.

YES YES YES!!!

Most people are not going to start out in the tablet market with a Samsung. Samsung is not that well known as a computer manufacturer (despite their extensive chip production). They just aren't in the public eye like Apple, Rim, Palm, Nokia, or MS, and they came in with guns blazing and prices high. Totally stupid move.

Plus, there are SO many far cheaper (ya get what ya pay for, but a 199 risk is far better than a 600 risk) Android alternatives. They carry them at BestBuy and Sears even. Hell, K-Mart.

The sales model is idiotic. This is more of a, "it's just a big ___ phone," situation than the iPad ever was. Why not just get one of those big assed Android phones anyway and have one bill? This is why Jobs said 7" is too small. There just isn't enough of a differential to justify a really high price for the device. There is definitely a market for the device, but not at those inane prices.

As for tablets on the whole, I think the MacBook air is more dangerous to the laptop market than the tablet market. There is no comparison, especially since the air has the full OS. People definitely need a full OS somewhere, and many need it to be portable. The iPad or Playbook or whatever else comes out will never fill that void.

There's just something about Android that is cheap ... it should never be expensive, I guess, because it is from Google. Just doesn't seem to be of the quality that an expensive tablet warrants.

I'll give you a hint Samsung. Maybe its the PRICE!!!! You know, pricing it the same as an iPad and you wonder why its not selling? 40% price cut and you might see the items shifting off the shelf a bit quicker ;)
