When I saw the movie for the first time, in 1976, it didn't occur to me that they could be anything *but* cool-looking TV displays.

The fact that they have a "portrait orientation" didn't even consciously cross my mind until just now. .and their placement on the table is close enough to symmetrical that I simply assumed that it *was* symmetrical, which is what one would expect to see if those were displays.

Now, though, I'm wondering if they might not be set just a little bit off-center and at slightly different angles to the near side of the table. . .and, come to think of it, there's no good design reason for a display to have a corner that protrudes over the edge of the table like both of these devices do, or to project upwards from the surface of the table; and, now that I *really* come to think of it, that table is just big enough to seat the mission's three-person science team. . .but only if those *aren't* fixed displays!

It doesn't matter who leaked what first. They wait for Apple to release to see if its a hit..(poor man's R&D) then they jump on the copy bandwagon and pretend they don't know what your talking about. Samsung is more guilty of this then anyone. They were first out the door with the iPhone knock off.. Samsung Instinct, first out the door with the iPad knock off, and probably will be first out (next to Dell's failed attempt) with a MacBook Air knock off..

I unfortunately have the Samsung Fascinate and its nearly identical to my old iPhone except it works a lot crappier.. I still have to start GPS 10 minutes before I leave the house.

I was one of those who suggested that Samsung should look at this (2001 was a huge event in my childhood). But I am also sad that any legal action is being considered by Apple in this case, it is a petty and weak act when they practically own the market.

One reason I bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone was specifically to avoid Apple and their greedy closed ecosystem attitude. If anything, these lawsuits have increased my desire to avoid Apple products in future. Terrible PR Apple, plain stupid.

Are you trying to say that the Samsung Galaxy Tab, that has a widescreen form factor, looks a lot less like these tablets and a lot more like the Tech Crunch/Fusion Garage Crunchpad and the early Chrome Tablet prototype concept pics that were leaked well before the iPad 1 was ever released? If so, you would be correct... ;-)

It's not just the tablets that apple is copying: you know the circular spaceship building that they're trying to build, it's like an exact copy from this movie also. And they go around saying that they invented the tablet and suing everyone. Shame on you apple!! Apple should get sued by Kubrik's family!

ummm....in this clip, neither man manipulates their "tablet" in any way, neither pressing it's surface nor handling it. Why are these assumed to be tablets instead of simply displays?

Look a little closer, that doesn't even match Samsung's main point in the argument. Those "tablets" have little to no bezel, very sharp corners, and many buttons (10 to be exact) laid out along one side. It actually more closely resembles an IBM Design patent. Oh, and guess what, those tablets in the movie have an IBM logo as well.
