T-Mobile USA boosts 4G HSPA+ 42Mbps coverage: 47 new markets

T-Mobile USA wants to give you a little extra motivation to go for its flavor of 4G, with an HSPA+ speed boost for 47 new markets. As of today, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Fresno are among the locations getting 42Mbps HSPA+ support, which – if you have a Rocket 3.0 USB modem – you can use for super-fast mobile downloads and uploads.

The carrier announced the first batch of HSPA+ 42 markets last month, which brings the total to 102. T-Mobile reckons that will mean more than 150m people having access to the service by mid-year, though of course not all of them will have devices that can support the theoretical top-end.

In fact, right now the only HSPA+ 42 compliant device is the Rocket 3.0 dongle; smartphones like the HTC Sensation 4G have radios limited to lower speeds. There's a full list of the newly-covered markets in the press release below.

T-Mobile's 4G Network Now Even Faster in More Than 100 Markets Across the Country

Today, T-Mobile is doubling the speed of its 4G network in 47 additional markets including Albuquerque, N.M.; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Sacramento and San Diego, Calif.; Salt Lake City, Utah and San Antonio, Texas. Now, customers in 102 markets across the country have access to T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network, enabling the fastest 4G speeds it has to offer, as well as increased network capacity and reliability.

T-Mobile has seen average download speeds approaching 10Mbps with peak speeds of 27Mbps on the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0 laptop stick—the company's first 42Mbps device. T-Mobile expects more than 150 million American's to have access to these increased 4G speeds by mid-2011.

Customers can choose from more than a dozen 4G devices, including:

4G Tablets: the Dell™ Streak™ 7 and the T-Mobile® G-Slate™ with Google™ by LG.

4G Laptop Sticks: the T-Mobile Rocket® 3.0, T-Mobile's first HSPA+ 42-capable device, the Rocket™ 2.0, T-Mobile's first HSPA+ 21-capable device, the T-Mobile Jet® 2.0 and the prepaid T-Mobile Rocket 4G.
