T-Mobile SyncUp DRIVE adds a 4G LTE hotspot to your car

T-Mobile has introduced SyncUp DRIVE, a new connected device that plugs into a car's OBD-II port and provides access to vehicle data, as well as an in-car WiFi network via the carrier's 4G LTE network. While devices like this aren't unusual, T-Mobile says SyncUp DRIVE is the only available device of its kind that uses and shares 4G LTE — it doesn't fail to point out that Verizon's HUM works with 2G networks and doesn't provide in-car WiFi.

SyncUp DRIVE works like other connected car devices — you plug it into the OBD-II port, where it is powered by the car while receiving data from it. That data is then made available to the driver via a mobile app, helping shed light on things like driving behavior. Being aware of that behavior helps one adjust their driving habits to be more safe, to cut down on fuel usage, and more.

The adapter's hotspot feature supports up to five devices at a time, and also tracks the vehicle's location. You can use it to find where your car is parked, for example, or to see where it is in real-time when someone else is driving it. The device even alerts you if someone bumps into your car or unplugs the SyncUp DRIVE unit. There's also instant notifications about any mechanical issues that crop up.

The SyncUp DRIVE adapter costs $149.99 USD, however T-Mobile is offering it for free as part of a 24-month financing agreement that includes a 2GB/month or greater Internet plan. If you like the idea of a connected car but not necessarily T-Mobile's offering, there are some alternatives on the market including Dash and Vinli.
