T-Mobile’s Sidekick is one of the heavyweights in the text-messaging realm for young and socially connected consumers. Today T-Mobile introduces its latest Sidekick, the Sidekick 2008. Previously dubbed the Sidekick Gekko, the new messaging-focused handset kicks off a new naming convention. But how does the new Sidekick fare compared to its predecessors and rivals?
Smaller than earlier models, measuring 4.7 x 2.3 x 0.7-inches and weighing 5.3oz, which means the display has had to shrink too. It’s now just 2.6-inches, but it keeps the same WQVGA 400 x 240 resolutions as the Sidekick LX. The Sidekick 2008 has the traditional screen hinge too; a little nudge to the corner of the screen pushes the display panel up and around to sit above the QWERTY keyboard. We found it a lot easier to nudge the screen up compared to the Sidekick LX, and seasoned users will have no problem popping it out using just one hand. Manufactured by Sharp, the LCD backlight is strong and surprisingly resistant to sun glare.
Many Sidekick users will be happy to find that the Sidekick 2008’s shell is swappable like the early Sidekick iD. T-Mobile went a little bit further this time by allowing users to customize their own shell design online. Submit a photo or other image at www.sidekickshells.com, pay $14.99 (or $9.99 each if you order two) and you’ll never confuse your Sidekick for anybody else’s. Even with the pop-off casings, though, we didn’t experience creaks or undue flexing, leaving us confident about the 2008’s build quality.
The QWERTY keyboard has always been the Sidekick’s not-so-secret weapon, and the 2008 is no different. A combination of great texturing and just the right amount of spacing adds up to very comfortable texting. The trackball navigation is not so successful, however, and feels a little imprecise. Sometimes we would over-roll and skip over the menu selection we were aiming for; it felt more accurate, if slower, using the D-pad. New to the OS is Quick Find, which is a cross-app search tool replacing all the individual search functions. Speed is fair, though it can lag if you have a particularly well-packed contacts list and lots of media.
Round the back, the 2008 sports a two-megapixel camera for photos or video. Thanks to the horizontal orientation, taking pictures is pretty much similar to holding a conventional digital camera. However there’s not much flexibility in the settings, and we particularly missed white balance options considering there’s no built-in flash. Despite that, image quality was fair.
Both images and video can then be emailed, sent by MMS picture message or stored on the included 512MB microSD card. There’s also the Bluetooth wireless printer profile, meaning you can directly print to a compatible printer. In fact, the Bluetooth support is pretty well featured: everything from headset through file transfer and including the A2DP stereo audio profile.
Messaging is the Sidekick 2008’s strong feature, though, and the company has taken the opportunity to further tweak the IM experience. Over and above the standard chat functionality, you’re able to create and join group chats, set custom status messages, search for friends in a buddy list and see who is logged into IM to immediately start a conversation. Internet browsing is similarly boosted, with a choice of PC-like, full-size or reformated to Sidekick screen-size browsing. The pop-up page overview concept has been borrowed from Nokia’s S60 browser, too; here called Mini Page, it gives you an idea of what’s on the page. Images from websites can be saved to the microSD card and then emailed or sent by MMS.
Given all the attention paid to the iPhone 3G’s new on-device AppStore, the Sidekick team could be rightly smug that their handsets have had such functionality for years now. Downloads now install with no need to restart the device, and themes can be set as default instantly.
Considering all those improvements it’s then triply frustrating that the Sidekick’s connection just can’t keep up with the competition. Considering this is the Sidekick 2008, it’s still sporting a radio from years back: quadband 850/900/1800/1900MHz with data speeds topping out at EDGE. Yes, EDGE is pretty reliable, but given even low-end rivals are including 3G now it would be nice to have the option here. Voice calls quality is generally good, and while the Sidekick might not be so tenacious with a signal as the iPAQ 910 we tested recently it still does a reasonable job.
The Sidekick 2008 is a decent handset. Functionality is in most areas par-for-the-course and, when it comes to messaging, better than many rivals. However “par-for-the-course” isn’t good enough to stand head & shoulders above the ever-crowded cellphone market. Die-hard Sidekick fans will recognize and appreciate the evolutionary changes, but new buyers may be looking for revolution instead, and we’re not sure the 2008 is the device that delivers. Bottom line: you’ll like it, but we don’t think you’ll love it.
The T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 will be available July 30 at select T-Mobile retail stores and online at www.sidekick.com, priced at $149.99 with a two-year service agreement.

I have the Sidekick Slide. Its a peace of CRAP! And im looking for a better phone. I want another Sidekick but it just can’t be the slide. The Sidekick 08 seem like its a very good phone. I just don’t like that color. How about you make it in a Variety of colors. Id prefer BLACK and BLUE. Well that’s a I wanted to say.

um, if u didnt notice, the whole shell comes off and you can put anything you want on it. maybe if u listened/read it, u would have known. and it comes with Black already on.
and the sidekick slide wasnt as good was because it wasnt made by Sharp, but by motorola.

I have just gotten the sidekick 2008, and I have to say it is great. I have had a lot of experience with sidekick; I’ve has the sidekick 2 and the sidekick 3. Out of all the sidekick 3 has to be the worst of the bunch, but by far the sidekick 2008 has the highest quality everything!
I wouldn’t listen to reviews from these people, personally I think its great. (:

Lala learn to spell no one has any idea what you are talking about. But anyway i just got the Sidekick 2008 after having the Sidekick iD and it was a huge upgrade for me. But yeah i love it and i do prefer it over the LX because it is smaller, the LX was just too big it felt like a PSP ha.

I just got the SK 08 and its way better then the SK 3 that thing was the biggest piece of crap I’d ever owned. The new 08 has a very nice camera and an awesome key board I would recommend this phone to anyone. Its also lighter then the others (which felt like carrying bricks)

the sk 2008 is the best sk so far. the camera is so much better then the lx camera. even tho it doesn’t have a flash who cares?? takin pictures in poorly lit areas with sidekick cameras that have flash come out like crap anyway. the 2008 is much smaller, lighter, and cheaper then the lx. you can make it any color you want and it has better bluetooth capabilities too. def get the 2008 over any sidekick.

Personally I hate the sidekicks they suck all around and yes I do own one I have the 2008 but if I had to buy one I wish I would of went with the lx instead but my sister has had the 2008 a week and its already messing up on her I think im going to trade my phone in for something else maybe a dash idk plus the camera sucks on this phone it may say its better but personally its not I took better pics with my nokia 6133 and it had like a 1.3 camera but if I had to absolutly get a sidekick id get the lx 1. Screens larger 2.who really cares about customization 3. The sidekick 08 is nothing but problems. And T-Mobile is no help. It doesnt even last a full day without dying. I miss phone calls and dont recieve text messages. Yea the camera and video is awesome but everything else is awful. Im a first time sidekick owner and never again do i want one. incredibly disappointed

i bought the sk 08, and i absolutely love it. yea, it doesn’t have a flash, but in the right light it takes great quality pictures. it’s a huge improvement from the 3 and the iD i’ve had and definitely my favorite of the 3. for those of you who don’t think the battery lasts ong enough here’s a tip, don’t leave your AIM running all day long, because thats the only time my battery doesn’t last. if you have a 2, 3, or iD i’d consider upgrading, but if you have the LX i’d wait for something even better because it has basically all the same stuff (:

I love my phone. I work with alot of people who have 3 different phones by 3 different companies trying to keep up with the Jone’s and they all want this phone. I love my phone I have 2 kids and we are out alot and when ever i need them to be quite i turn on a game, like sonic, and they are quite for hours. I really love my phone. I had the dash but it became ordinary, yeah its an ok phone but you have to clear the task manager all the time or your phone will freeze. My old dash just stop working one day so i decided to get this phone, new for 75.00. i couldnt pass up the deal.

I switched from att to t-mobile. It has only been 4 days, the sidekick “Gekko” or 2008 is really nice, light,and fast….problem is my keypad stopped working, i’m not able to use my spacebar or alt key. called customer service (very kind people!) assured me mine was defected to take it back to the store I bought it with the receipt or contract, if possible same person whom sold it to me….we’ll see how that works out today. Over all web browsing is fast and easy (pending on reception of course). Easy to get accustomed to from Blackberry 8820 to sidekick t-mobile service. hope this helps!!

I bought the sidekick 2008 16 days ago and I am on my third handset. The spacebar, shift, alt, !, “,” and ? will not enter in the text field. There is no common cause to this as far as i know HOWEVER, if i do the hard reset (under the battery cover) and leave my screen open, it will work until i shut it and reopen. I am furious that they cannot figure out what’s wrong with it. I also had to get a new sim card cause they thought that was the problem.
+1I love the phone, but this is the weirdest problem I’ve ever heard of.

I’ve had my sk08 for 31 days and nothing has happened to it an nothing bad has ever gone wrong….the only thing that does suck is that the battery only last like 3/4 of a day but that’s about it!! Im writing this now on my sidekick!! Oh and the lx is just as great a phone as the 08 some differences but its really up to what your looking for a bigger phone or a smaller more descrete phone. So why bash on eachothers phone when its just a phone!

I have the sidekick lx and fer other lx-ers out there who got the over-the-air update about a month ago, don’t get the 08. It is almost the exact same thing, except with customizable bumpers. The 08 has a smaller screen, and the overall shape looks outdated and clunky, like the ID or sk2. if I were you, I’d wait for something truly different from tmobile sidekick, instead of nonsense “upgrades”..:\

Obviously you have to get the picture messaging in the plan in order to get the picture. if you bought it in the T mobile store and got a cheaper plan its most likely not gonna receive anything. and you have to get the data plan for your phone to show the contact number and the rington.

ive had the sk08 for about 3 weeks now and it has to be the best phone ive ever had. i can see most of the people who hate on the 08 have lx’s. just makes me think that they’re jealous because they have to wait for an upgrade, or didnt finish their contract. knock on wood, all my buttons work great. all the features are almost the same as the lx, and as for the shells for the lx, they just make a big phone even bigger. i suggest you get this phone. its more a tool to use to keep in contact with people, not really a to talk, unless you use the ear bud which works great. I just wanna say, dont hate on the 08 unless you’ve really had it as your own for about a week, and dont say you hate it cuz its defective, just trade it in for a new one, not everything perfect, just like the iphones and xbox’s. everyone i highly recommend you get this phone, its a great price and its worth it!!!

I agree, i had the sidekick lx and now have the sidekick gecko/2008 and i’m actually considering just using my lx instead because it’s got a larger display, flash and is in my opinion better than the gecko. I could care less about wireless printing with a phone and such. My lx is rigged to have red mood lights as well..my own customization to it. I prefer the lx over the 2008 because its got pretty much all the same features besides what’s mentioned in the above quote. If you do the updates you get the new version of AIM and the video camera along with new search features.

Okay, picture messaging is a feature that is not optional. as long as you have sent a picture from your phone you should be able to receive pictures, if not it might be the other wireless carrier or the handset itself. Overall, I think the 08 is awesome. I have had it for almsot a month and no problems thus far. I made an awesome cover for it with my own pictures all over the back of it. I do think that it seems a little less sturdy than the slides but I must tell you I am rough with my phones and the swivel has some ‘give’ to it which really helps. As far as the question about making a picture your background unfortunately you cannot. As far as I know you can only have a “theme” as your background.*Dont quote me on this because I don’t work in the Sidekick department….yes it has its own department with techs to support and troubleshoot separately* Working for tmobile i do get the opportunity to hear a lot of feedback on a lot of different handsets and thus far I haven’t had any complaints personally with the sidekick 08 So I absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a sidekick that has a little more personality and a little less bulk.

I just purchased the SK08 and this is my first sidekick. I’m 31 years old, and it seems like a phone for younger people. I like what I’ve used of it, but I already have a problem. The first one I bought yesterday and charged for at least 7 hours and it never fully charged, and died in 1 hour. Then I charged it again over night and it died within 15 minutes. I took it back and they replaced it and this one has been charging for over 6 hours now and still isn’t fully charged. I even turned it off to charge and I’m still waiting! What’s up? I paid full retail of 317 dollars and this phone is driving me nuts!

i currently have a sk lx, and i’ve used the sk08. I’m also looking to upgrade to the sk08 and was reading everyone’s review to make a decision and have come to the conclusion that everyone’s opinion is their own because while the sk lx is great and has it’s qualities, the sk08 has good qualities that the lx doesn’t. Im reading about the controversy w/ the lx’s camera over the 08’s and i’ll tell you that the flash on the lx is no reason to say it’s better. has anyone tried to take pictures w/ the flash? it’s pointless because even in the dark the pic comes out as a bright light. i’ve also take a fare share of pictures with the 08 and noticed right away the difference in quality so in my opinion, what’s the point in the flash if the picture quality still sucks with it? Another controversy is with the durability of the new 08. i understand anyone that would be sketchy over the idea of it’s durability since it’s shell is interchangeable. yeah i don’t own one but the one that i have used seemed to be just as durable as the lx. in fact anyone who owns the lx knows how thin and cheap the back cover of it is. As far as the size comparison goes, the lx is big and that doesn’t bother me but the 08 is just barely smaller and of course has a smaller screen but IS BIGGER THAN THE SLIDE. And about any issue with the software between the phones, they are pretty much the exact same with the exception that the bluetooth is a little better on the 08. also, for anyone who has had problems with connectivity, signal, sending/recieving messages, i will tell you that all your problems like that lie with tmobile, not the phone because there have been rare times where my lx did not or was not able to send/recieve. The only thing i cannot figure out is why is the lx’s suggested retail is $400 while the new 08’s is $300 that only makes me hesitant.

My sister recently got the new 2008 sidekick. But the problem she is having is that when ppl send her texts…it doesnt show the name of the person who sent it…only the number. Is this normal with the sidekick?? She also keeps losing contacts and having to re enter them. Called T mobile and they said that you have to pay 20 more dollars a month and that will stop contacts from being lost, but supposedly can never see who texts her?????

hey brandon man. your sis’s phone seems to work fine. it’s just that tmobile is stingy because all contacts are stored on your phones network so if you do not have the SIDEKICK UNLIMITED PLAN which is in fact 20 a month then every time the phone is powered off for any reason then the contacts you entered are not saved, hence having to reenter them. it sucks but that’s the catch of having a sidekick. it’s 30 a month if you only have the sidekick unlimited plan but only 20 if you have it along with another voice plan.

so i finally got my lx sold and bought the new 08. I have to say it’s cool and all but there really isn’t any drastic change beside the fact that you can change the shell. I’ve got a custom one in the mail i’m waiting on. which speaking of that, i read the post above talking about now you can change the face plates of the lx? i doubt that but we need some pics to check it out. but in the end, i have to say anyone that likes the lx would probably like the 08 just the same. but out of all the bad comments i’m hearing about the new sk they are only about it not working or being a cheap ass phone. the 08 is just another phone like every other one out there so the chances of your new 08 not working when you get it are the same as your lx, motorola razor, blackberry, or any other phone. mine works great w/ no problems, some people just get unlucky but then again that’s what the warranty is for. I got the low down on why it’s cheaper than the lx. It’s the cost to make it of course. The phone is just all around smaller than the lx and the screen is smaller too which is the major contributing factor of why the 08 is cheaper. instead of having different color parts on the phone it’s all black plastic as opposed to the lx having a nice glossy brown or blue finish along with chrome around the edge and a nice d-pad etc. etc. but dont take that as it’s a piece. i love it better than my lx i had. but to answer anyone’s question about the durability of the phone it’s just as durable and sturdy as the lx. so for the money, i’d have to say w/o the contract, the 08 is the better buy.

also, for all those hatters of the 08 with their reasoning being the lx has a camera flash or the lx has a bigger screen. you guys are in denial of how well that stupid flash really works. i had it and we all know the flash is nothing to brag about. if it was then they woulda kept it with the 08. and what about the screen? those people must be basing their opinions off of some pictures they saw of the new 08’s on the computer because the screen is barely smaller than the lx. again, i loved my lx but there wasn’t anything on it to brag about being better besides the fact that it is indeed a unique sidekick in itself

I have had my sk 2008 for about 2 weeks now. great phone. good quality. just like the LX, if not – better; just smaller and more convinient. The only complpaint I have is battery life (which for me has always been an issue with a SK compared to other mobile phones) the screen is a bit smaller and the QWERTY keyboard can be a lil more comfortable.

oh my god! i love this phone! its like the best phone ive ever had! and the customizable shells are really cool :D i havnt had any problems yet and the buttons are lifted and round so its super easy and comfortable to text. the camera has a great quality in my opinion and the video is decent ^_^ the web is pretty fast and it has a newer version of AIM. PLUS, you can download little things such as a calculator for free! can you say awsome? best phone ever! I LOVE IT <3

I bought the Sidekick 2008. Used it for about three weeks.
Didn’t like it. Bought a new Sidekick LX the other day.
Huge difference between the two devices (for me).
The sidekick 2008 build quality isn’t quite as nice as the LX (IMO). Keep that in mind if it’s important to you. Also the keyboard feels better to me on the LX. And I like the larger screen on the LX.

I have had my 08 for two weeks now I have been waiting since the original sidekick to get one. I have played with all the side kicks and I would consider this as there best. This fucking rocks and it was honestly the best phone beside my N-Gage that I have ever bought. As far as the casing I buy mines at a swap meet. I can get colors that tmobile don’t even have. The one that I have on it now is a metallic red lol don’t be scared to get hood wit your phone.

okay I have the sidekick 08 and it’s a good phone, but in the past month I’ve had it it has broken 4 times, every time I call t-moble the person sends a new phone out, I asked the lady if I can upgrade to the g1 because the pricing is simular, the lady said I need more credits, so I am getting a new 08 on wed. when you’re there & if auto-correct spelling when possible is checked.
un-check it. then you’re spacebar & alt will start working. (:

& so what if there isn’t flash. the pictures are really good in detail, & the videos are OKAY.
if you stay on the aim all day it wastes most of your battery.
at first when someone would send me a picture message, it would tell me to go to my.tmobile.com & look at it or something. but then i received them.
when i get a text message it tells me right away, & when i missed a call..
but aren’t all phones supposed to do that? (x

I was debating about getting the Lx or 08 and reading the comments was just weird sum didnt help at all. But I’ve been doing alot of research and I think I’ll settle with the 08 because in one review i read where sum1’s Lx didnt have gud service while the 08 had great service. My friend also has the Lx and she says everything is great but she has a lot of promblems with the service. The 08 just seems to stand out more to me for sum reason….a calling mayb? =P

I just got the sk 2008 ,its awesome , my only complaint is the trackbacll , its a lil sunken in which i think is the problem , being a girl with nails the softer buttons on the qwerty keyboard are great lol my nails slid off the sk3 , the display is so crisp.. the camera doesnt need a flash it works great .. if its dark enough for a flas then its prolly too dark for the sk3 or lx to get a good pic anyways .. i ove it

Pretty much a huge POS. I do not recommend it to anyone! My ancient RAZR could sync with my Mac – not the Sidekick 2008! The sliding “shell” comes off if you pick up the phone wrong, the Sidekick server is incredibly slow, there are no applications to open e-mail attachments, the speaker truly sucks, the bluetooth connectivity is just as bad. If you want a decent ringtone or background, you are forced to download it, and you can’t preview it on T-mobile’s website. The speaker and camera buttons are in just the right spot for you to press them while you are trying to text or talk, so prepare to go deaf. I have had major issues with the text messaging system – losing some of them, and then getting some that were three months old on the same day. Today, I had a major rebooting issue for no reason; I wasn’t even using the phone. Just pulled it out of my purse and it was malfunctioning! Steer clear of this phone! It’s a huge waste of money!

I am very upset that I can not find a replacement screen for the sidekick 2008. I left my sidekick 2008 phone in my purse is not even 3 months old, I did not get the extra insurance, knowing that I only sign up for one year, well I got screwed by Tmobile I ws told that its physical damage therefore they are not going to replace the phne or even fix the lcd scrren, now i have 8 months of paying them $100 a month with the messed up phone that I physically did not do. its really ashamed that I been with tmobile for a long time that I have to really thing to change mobile device provider next year coz the company did not care about me or my loyal service with them. I been with them before they became tmobile, i hve transfeerd my number from sprint to them i have 7 lines with them, three accounts my family have 2 more lines with them, 2009 its a new for us I will go to the company that it will treat me better than Tmobile.

I have 120 contacts. My phonebook & call log are basically unusable because they are so slooow. They freeze up. Plus, my sk08 is slow when making calls and its slow to show incoming caller i.d. & lord help me if I’m trying to answer a beep. That’s automatically a missed call because it takes so long 4 my phone 2 switch between calls. Basically, all my “phone” stuff sucks. The xtras (text, im, email, etc.) are fine, but hell, they’re called “xtrs” 4 a reason. I need a PHONE that doesn’t take 4ever 2 accomplish basic tasks. Can sumone help? P.s. I never had the “spacebar issue”.

I have always wanted a sidekick, but up until recently haven’t had the money for it. I bought a Sidekick 2008 maybe a week or two ago and I LOVE it. I don’t know if its better or equal to any previous sidekick models, but i know its a better phone than i have ever had before. I am definitely happy with it.
I also purchased two extra shells from T-Mobile’s sidekick shells site and they are really durable and cute. The site offers many different images and you can design your own to fit any personality.

DO NOT…I repeat DO NOT waste your money on a sidekick. They are an overpriced piece of crap. Yes they look spiffy and all but lack in programming. The internet is slow. It doesn’t allow you to use mp3’s as ringtones. Almost everything you do with the phone is more complicated then it seems. I think the idea was great but it’s sad that they never really took advantage of all the new things you can do with phones now days. Honestly save your money and buy the new G1 if you want something like the sidekick but with more options.

Personally I think sidekicks suck. I have the sidekick 2008 and its really not all its cracked up to be. If anyone wants to get a new phone..blackberry pearl all the way. It was the best phone I ever had. And I was stupid to get rid of it but for some reason I thought the 08 was gonna be better. With sidekicks u have to pay for abs everything..there’s no way to beat the system..or at least I haven’t figured it out yet. The shell idea is the only cool thing about it.

It probably does not vibrate because you do not have the sidekick plan with the phone, my friend has one and has been getting similar problems, and I who have the plan have not been getting those problems.
I went from a SK3 to a SK2008, and saying that the sk3 and skLX have the same camera mp wise 1.3mp, and i hated how bad those pics came out, even with the use of flash, 2mp just seem to have to be standard.The video feature also helps and the custom shells. Now the LX has to have something going for it i presume. Most LX users would say the 2008 is a ripoff, while secretly they are just angry they dont have the newest sidekick. Oh also the 08 is much lighter so it wont feel like such a hassle having it in ur pocket. OH tthe LX has a bigger screen, yet bigger and heavier phone. the 08 has more ram for better service.

I just bought a Sidekick 2008 from eBay and I am super excited for it to get here! I currently have a Sidekick 3, and have had it barely over a year. In the past 3 or 4 months I’ve started having tons of problems with it . . . and my bluetooth on it hasn’t worked from day 1. I’ve heard the 3 is one of the worst ones in the series, and I can see why lol. I can’t wait til my 2008 gets here!!!

The sidekick 08/aspen/gekko is better than the lx because it has more features it cost less its has the internet faster and it has better camera,,,,,the lx is like a bit of the same thing and the bad things of it is that it cost to much and the internet is not as fast and other stuff but if you ppl out there have the money to get a sidekick 08/aspen/gekko go buy it its really worth it and for the other ppl that think the lx is better and they talk bull about it they should stop cuz its only jeolusy that they have and they actually want it so phones are phones there is nothing bad about them

the 08 is the best sidekick out of them all so far. I’m actually using it right now to post this. I mean, everyone and their mothers have the sidekick LX, just take a look around you. and I like being able to customize the case because sidekicks are stolen A LOT and this makes it so much harder. sidekick LX’s all look the same. and the keyboard is the best I’ve used so far, I can text incredibly fast on it. I love the email features on it, it really comes in handy when I have to type up homework in the morning, so I can just send it and print it later on. the internet could be a little better, but that’s on sidekicks in general, because it operates on the same network as the LX. its also slimmer and lighter, the LX can barely fit in anyones pocket.

Sidekick 08 is a piece of crap. i got one and it a SHAM. Loses network all the time and u have to keep entering ur pin to log on to the network. Sometimes when u log on all Ur inbox txt msg appear Unread while some dissapear. WTF. Customer service reps R of No help. This is the last phone Im getting from TMobile.

I have sidekick 08 and I used to have the ID, sk3 and the slide. I love my 2008 the best sidekick out right now. Don’t listen to all the bad reviews about it if you buy it new and something goes wrong then keep the recipt. What’s so hard about that. Here’s a few things the review forgot to mention. First you get with the sidekick plan a free email account that goes directly to your phone. That right there makes it better then a stupid 3g iphone. No forwarding emails to your phone. Also you can send and receive picture/video messaging. Iphones can’t do that. Unless thru email. What also the review failed to mention is the ease of jumping from one program to another without having to close one. The trackball can also be customize to the speed that you want. So if your over shooting your target….slow the reaction of the trackball. Also with the alarm you can have your phone on silent and when you alarm goes off it overrides the silence which is a really cool feature. You can also program your phone to automatically switch to any of your sound profiles. I.e. 4am to 3pm silent mode. Then it will switch back automaticly. Personaly with all the phones out there it comes down to what you like the best. I use to own a iphone and when I switch to a sidekick, I get more people asking me …. that’s a cool phone, or let me see that. More reactions then a stupid iphone. That everyone has.

Just a warning if you’re thinking of buying the Sidekick 08: the buttons are NOT as tactile as the cheapie version Sidekick ID. Meaning you have to press the buttons REALLY hard and they don’t stick out as much as Sidekick ID. Result: more effort and frustration to type fast. If you text as much as I do, sore thumbs are a big annoyance. The screen is also not very durable: I’ve only had this phone for a few months and use it gently, and the screen doesn’t always go back properly. Meaning that it’s only a matter of months, if not weeks, before I have screen problems.
I love the slenderer design, but durability HAS been greatly sacrificed.
Bottom line: if you think you’re “upgrading” from Sidekick ID by getting the Gekko, you’re not. So what, 08 version has an average camera and cool switchable covers. You need bright lighting and hold the phone VERY STILL in order to get a picture worth sending.
Overall, my expectations were higher for a phone of $200 or so (release price, I know it went down since). Day-to-day functionality matters MUCH more than sale gimmicks of custom covers, camera and music player. Because after the novelty of a new phone wears off in a week and you’re stuck with sore thumbs and a poorly rotating screen, those “sweet” covers won’t make a darn difference.

This is not the best phone. It gets very hot when you make a phone call and the batery life is horrible. The music player is okay, but drains the battery. The internet is actually somewhat fast and easy to use but the apps and such are very expensive. The texting is very nice with the full qwerty keypad. But the worst of all is that the phone constantly needs to reboot itself. It has a message that you must contact customer care, but customer care does nothing about it. I’ve been through five of these and they’ve done nothing to help me. Instant messaging is also very slow and drains the battery fast. The camera has horrible quality and sometimes I never recieve picture messages.
