I added a Lumia 710 to our family plan for my daughter when it came out in January. The deal was for a free phone on contract. The contract was $20 / month ($10 voice + text, $10 data) (add a line).

So free Lumia 710 and $20 / month for the service plan. This deal could not be beat.

and I have been really suprised at just how good this phone is. Makes me wish T-Mobile had a heftier Windows Phone to consider for myself.

True. True. But talk to (in most cases) the iPhone users. They don't want to give up their precious for a vastly "inferior" phone.

In no world is the Lumia 710 the best phone out there. But for what you pay to get? You're getting a pretty damn good phone. Nowhere near perfect, but try to find a better deal than this.

I think where T-mobile can separate themselves from the other carriers is by their Value Plan. I think they should push this forward. For crying out loud! they should ONLY do the Value Plan. If I recall correctly, T-mobile allows you to pay monthly payments for your phone. So, you don't need to flop $650 for a phone upfront. You can put $20 or so each month.

So, T-mobile should get "rid" of all their phones can carry all the "stock" phones. Granted some may need the T-mobile Band. But I think this could be a very popular option. Stock phones and cheap monthly payments.

If T-mobile had the iPhone, would it even matter?

The only place where the iPhone would matter for T-mobile is the Value Plans. Those plans heavily cut under what other carriers are charging. But most people will "gak" at the $650 to $850 unlock price of the iPhone.

T-mobile's other plans? They really don't significantly offer anything that the other carriers offer.

What T-mobile offers that the other carriers don't offer is VALUE plans. $10 unlimited family texting? $5 for 200MB of data? $10 for 2GB of data? $25 for 5GB of data? $50 for 2 lines and 1000 minutes? $5 add a line? Good luck finding anything THAT CHEAP on the other carriers.

Yes, that is where T-mobile could stand out with the iPhone. Only problem is, most iPhone users I know will GAUK at paying $650 for an iPhone, especially when their is 4 in their family. They rather spend $200 upfront and pay hundreds more, if not thousands more, over the two years than having to shell out $650 per iPhone. (I mean, savings of $1000 or more AFTER you include buying all those iPhones unlocked)

I'm on T-mobile and I LOVE their value plan. My family cut or cellular bill by a lot when we switched to their Value plan. I am MORE than willing to pay $500 to $1000 for a phone unlocked, because I know the savings I will have with that. But with most people? They aren't willing to pay that much for a phone, EVEN if the savings are huge.

i don't know about you but i don't like being bent over and reamed over price plans by at&t. Me and my girl pay $131 a month for the 2 gigs of data per phone with 750 min shared and unlimited text ($30 option WTF!!!) i dont need the fast data connection because i work in an area with wifi all the time. If some one can give me everything that at&t or VZW or sprint offers at a cheaper price and slower speed that I can live with, then I say they just earned a new customer

I don't know where you 're getting "despiration" here. The topic is significantly lower pricing for cellular service. If you happen to like the iPhone for all its features AND you're not a heavy data downloader or movie wathcer, why not use TMo? I'm thinking of users like my mom, she just checks email and does texting, Edge becomes less of an issue for these users. And, if it is an issue, then, apparently, HSPA+ is coming soon, problem solved, and nobody was desperate anyway.

Great article! I knew I wouldn't be the only one investing in an iPhone for the T-Mobile network ;) Although the price of the unlocked phone was $700, what I save per month is definitely worth it. I love my phone and wouldn't trade it for any other network. If T-Mobile works for you, then you should stick to it. If not, leave. :)
