Remember how interesting Symbian's concept video for a future smartphone UI was? And how it partially delivered on some of that with the first Symbian^4 UI design mock-ups? When it comes to revolution, the only one we're really seeing is a downward spiral; the latest video demos of Symbian^4 confirm the new, flexible desktop widgets, but nothing about it feels exciting or segment-changing.

As we saw before, there are three homescreen panes with some new transition animations and more user-control over how the panels are laid out. There's little to distinguish it from the iPhone or other touch-controled handsets on the market today, though; after Symbian directly reference their rivals in their technical documentation, we thought they'd make more of an effort to differentiate the UI.
To be fair, it's only early 2010 and Symbian^4 isn't expected to debut on devices for another twelve months or so. In the meantime Symbian^3 should arrive in Q3 2010 this year.
