a whole lot of customers care about office. Its one of the best selling software in the world. maybe even the highest. And WP7 isn't failing because of Metro. Most people when they use it say they love metro and it makes iOS feel dated. WP7 is failing because it was very late to the game, it has horrible hardware requirements by today's standards, and unlike iOS, it isn't based on it's parent OS code. That will all change with WP8. Except the late to the game part of course

Not really. As an HP NDA customer I saw some early previews of their Win8 tablets. They were white with a wide screen aspect and just a little larger than the Kindle Fire. Dell and Lenovo also told us that they have similar products in the pipeline but failed to show us anything without a trip to their briefing center. There was almost a giddyness or a "finally" in their voice that Windows was becoming more touch friendly.

Let's be honest. The OEMs weren't jumping on this 'opportunity' because Windows RT is very similar to the failed WP7, and worse, MS was charging $85/copy to include Office that consumers don't really care about. MS, like Nokia, needs to accept reality, that the profit margins they once enjoyed will not exist in the future. Android is supposedly $15 or less, that's the most the unsuccessful Microsoft can except in mobile - just like phones. I think it's more likely that Dell and HP just abandon tablets and phone than they try to make that pricing work.

I'm starting to think that Android + Chrome is the only 'dual mode' OS that will make sense, since they're both lightweight platforms built around the cloud. Right now, with Windows 8, MS has one 'heavy' desktop OS with all the apps and one 'lightweight' desktop/touch OS with few apps, and together they don't make one good OS.

That is what happens when an 'ecosystem' is run for the benefit of one. The others see no reason to take risk, since if they succeed number one takes the profit.
Apple has done that to ATT, but its mgmt has awarded itself bonuses for the blunder of giving 3 years profit to Apple. Shareholders are not amused.
