They didn’t die during the explosion. There was radio transmissions to and from the shuttle after in happened. They also have records showing the use of oxygen masks by the crew after the explosion. Sad but true.

Wow. I was a junior in high school when the Challenger exploded. It was a free period. I was in the library flipping through a “Sports Illustrated” and glancing up at the small TV the librarian had set up especially for the shuttle liftoff. Then came the explosion and disbelief. Someone — I can’t recall if it was a teacher or a student — burst into the library and said, “The shuttle blew up! They’re all dead!” Then he just stood there for a moment before taking off down the hall. The whole day was surreal. The administration didn’t want us to dwell on the explosion, so they ordered the staff to turn off the TVs. Some did. Some didn’t. No one could focus on anything else. We were safe and sound and young in rural America, and we didn’t know what to do.

The Challenger disaster affected me profoundly when I was young. This is amazing footage and really brought back the sadness of the event.

It’s sad to listen the voice of people…there’s some italian and they don’t understand the tragedy…at the start they think it is normal…something like a fireworks…but in the same moment people die…

One of the victims of this flight was Ronald E. McNair which is from Lake City, SC about 10min from where I grew up. The junior high school I went to was named after him, anyway I would bet any amount of money when this information was released (if they know about it) they are stopping classes to show this footage.

Given there were hundreds of people watching all over the Cape and this was the mid-80s; I would not be shocked if more footage wasn’t out there.

Amazing it was hidden for so long. Amazing. Never to be forgotten by our generation (Gen Xers).
