I have been a flight attedant now for 29 years and could not agree with the article more! I have seen the lack of manners decline so in this electronic age. There is such a sense of "entitlement" people have today! When I ask you to turn it off...don't question me "even if it is in airplane mode"...yes even if it is in airplane mode it is still ON! Electronic books....yes they are electronic! Don't act so surprised!

As far as listening to music and kids shows and games over speakers, when I tell you that no one 5 rows around you wants to listen to Barney or perhaps your choice of music....put the speakers in! No speakers, then turn it off!

I couldn't disagree more.

I have seen plenty of abusive flight attendants, and even experienced a couple. Some models of the Kindle don't turn off. Nor do they have a user accessible battery that can be removed. Yet ignorant attendants will still argue with me and a couple have even threatened to have me thrown off the plane because I can't comply with their IMPOSSIBLE directive to turn off my Kindle. I have talked to others who have been through the exact same experience.

Yet no one seems to be interested in educating these ignorant people. The Kindle has been out for what, 4-5 years? And still the average attendant doesn't know that they don't have an on/off switch?

When people choose to accept ignorance and just "do what they say" we all lose. Facts become less important and blindly doing what we're told actually becomes a virtue.

So, you might be asking: I would have a bigger problem with this than other Kindle owners? It would be a reasonable question. Rather than put the Kindle in the seat pocket WITHOUT turning it off (as most people do), I try to educate the uneducated. "It's a Kindle; you can't turn it off." I say. But since you lied to her in the past and pretended to turn your Kindle off, she thinks I'm the liar.

And thus we found ourselves in a world where those who perpetuate lies are the good guys "full of awesome" while the truth-tellers are jerks. That can't possibly lead us down a bad road, could it?

When it comes to iPads and the phones I can see your point. However, blind acceptance of stupidity and ignorance is never the right answer. If one of your main points is to blindly accept the authority of the attendant, I think people are far less likely to follow someone who has just exposed his or her ignorance than they are to follow someone who has shown some capacity to reason. If I'm in a life and death situation, I'm certainly not willing to trust my life to someone who can't grasp the concept of e-ink.

It might sound like that if you're not very good at "reading" or "understanding" but maybe read it again. I'm talking about not doing anything for its own sake but thinking about what you're doing, even if someone says it in an authoritative tone.

It's quite simple really. If you can't live without your laptop/tablet/mp3 for ten fucking minutes whilst you take off or land then you're a complete and utter douchebag and the flight attendant should have the right to punch you repeatedly in the face until you stop bleating or you lose consciousness. Either will do.

Follow rules just because someone in authority tells you to do so without questioning them. Wow we've all seen where that leads to. Flight attendants do indeed tell us to turn off the equipment because it interferes with the navigational equipment, not because they want our undivided attention. They start the whole process with a lie and thus negate the basis for us building the trust of authority which you proffer in your article. If they were to say we need them turned off because we need your attention their argument would be stronger than if they lie to us. And if the purpose is to get our undivided attention, which is a good goal, then they should also require us to put away books, magazines and make sure that everyone is fully awake and not sleeping. There is no technical or effective difference in reading a book or kindle or iPad when not wearing headphones. None interferes with the airplane equipment and all divert the passengers attention from the take off and landing process. They are indistinguishable. So why single out one technology and not another. How about we make the rules simple to enforce and based on logic. You can't wear headphone during take off and landing and you can't have anything playing through a speaker. But if you want to read a book or read an eReader, these activities do not interfere with the plane and do not unduly divert the attention of the passengers.

If you want people to respect authority, authority needs to also respect people and logic. Otherwise it descends to a point of ridiculousness and revolt against authority. It is not being self-absorbed to question authority, and rebel when it is wrong, it is the very basis of being American.a

The fact is that even if I were to turn mine off, not everyone will follow the rules... ever. If the pilot comes on and says someone is causing interference, then sure, maybe I'll turn it completely off. Mine has a very clear indicator that I'm in airplane mode and I'd be glad to show the flight attendant that if she asks. A phone in airplane mode isn't going to hurt anything.

I assume this is talking only about the climb to 10k feet? If so, I'd agree.

If not, then one pilot here, chipping in to say I disagree :) It's not really a secret, that cell phones and laptops don't interfere with the equipment... even when you're in the pilots seat.... and my perspective on it is just the General Aviation stuff, not the pro stuff that has extra shielding and distance from passengers like you get in a commercial airline. Most pilots who are GA, will feel free to send off a quick call to the wives to say they are almost home when the airport comes into view, or if you're flying VFR and had a bit more crosswind than you thought, and can't find a new airport, will use cell data to map it real quick, and get your nose pointed in the right direction rather than calling in to the busy tower the way we used to have to. I'd be willing to bet at least some are using their cell GPS's.. I haven't yet, but if that was the safest thing to do, that's what I'd do.

Yawn.......obviously you did read my post I never said I wouldn't do as the airline requested...you might try reading before mouthing off. I was just pointing out that I agree not to give the airline staff a hard time. Do I turn my data off on my phone when I take ofc as there is no point in having it on until im back on the ground. My argument is not that I do or don't want to shut off my electronics is that there is never any supporting documentation in the media that shows any correlation it's just another media instilling fear. I believe the rule is set by the FAA not the airline. So airline staff need to be supported in following the regulations.

Do you also make sure that your carry on is of correct size and fits fully in the overhead bin above your seat?

A laptop bag is just that a laptop bag. it is not a bag for your laptop, work papers, 3 500 page technical manuals, your small electronics repair kit, and 5 magazines for you to read. All of that goes in your carry on and has to fit in the damn box. If it doesn't they should make you gate check it and fine you 25% of the fare.

Also they should board planes from furthest from the door to closest, one side at a time... varriations of this that would be acceptable, 5 rows of one side, followed by 5 rows of the other side, from furthest from the door to nearest... it shouldn't take you more than 3 minutes to make to your seat, unless you are one of the people that require assistance when boarding. In which case you get to go last.

Anyways, the people wanting to/leaving thier stuff onis way down the list as far as was bothers me about flying.

I've been not turning my stuff off during take-off or landing since I first flew on a plane and I plan on continuing to not turn it off. If life has taught me anything, it's that even the experts mostly are
just muddling along...and I feel no need to upset anyone about it. Lots of people ask me to do lots of things all the time: sometimes they make sense and sometimes they don't. Speed limits convey some information but are transparently unenforced. The doctor thinks my daughter has hives for some unrelated reason and tells me to keep her on the antibiotics she's on, but it turns out she's allergic to penicillin.

I reserve the right to lie to them, pretend I am complying, and then do whatever the hell I planned on doing anyway. I don't enjoy complaining, so I don't. I just disobey.

It's not self-absorption; it's the exercise of agency. I don't want to go to my congressman and lobby for a bill or what-have-you. That sounds like a lot more work than just turning it off until they buckle their belts and turning it right back on again.

By all means, continue to defer to authority for authority's sake. I mean, if it works for camp counseling, clearly it must work in every other g-d field of human concern. But shut up, jackboot, about other people who don't. Why do you give a s**t? I don't want to hear your complaining. Crash landing or no, guess what: eat me.

I agree with you on that one. Discipline is required. There are some things parents should attempt to control. Its a non -stop struggle from start to finish when I've had to travel with kids (three, at the time they were 4, 3, 3). I did my best to make the flight as peaceful as possible, but that involved making them cry when it was time to strap them into their seats and shut off all electronic equipment. The crying was annoying some passengers, but it had to be done.

Beautifully stated.
It's about you paying attention in an emergency, not getting in the way of someone who's NOT buried in their Kindle, iPad or PlayStation portable, and maybe wants to evacuate safely.
It's not that we're jealous that you have better toys, and we have to work. If we don't enforce the rules, we get in trouble... and should we really have to ask you three times like your mom did to get you to the dinner table before your food got cold?
Same for the noise cancelling headphones- truly even if my personal opinion is that those who don't see the chaos of an evacuation going on around them, and instead are in bliss listening to a symphony are going to perish as a result of their foolishness, we actually HAVE TO ask that they be removed until the seat belt sign is off. (Not one ear, both ears!!!) After asking nicely twice, the captain must be informed, and the next step hits the press!

Although I do agree with the "Shut-up" part of the argument as no one wants to hear someone bitch about it on the plan. I think this whole thing fails to deal with the real issue, there is no evidence that any of these electronic devices have any effect on anything on the plane. And yes there is always a few people with the what if argument. Personally i'm more worried about the company that won the lowest bid to repair the aircraft then everyone on the plane listing to music during take off. But it's america we love to complain about stuff that doesn't really matter while important stuff is left out of the daily news reports. But I agree give the flight attendants a break.

And yes there is always a few people with the what if argument. Personally i’m more worried about the company that won the lowest bid to repair the aircraft then everyone on the plane listing to music during take off. But it’s america we love to complain about stuff that doesn’t really matter while important stuff is left out of the daily news reports. But I agree give the flight attendants a break.

Great read and some great points. I fly enough now to know the presentation by heart. I don't see the big deal in my having my cell phone in airplane mode listening to music during takeoff/landing/in-flight. Do I need to be playing a game? No. Does it matter if I'm playing a game? Probably not. Do I sometimes want to take a picture from my window while the plane is close to the ground because I'm a geek? Absolutely. THAT will help me remember my trip more than reminiscing while I'm being catapulted into the air on an airplane. While I respect your position and am even okay with cell phones not transmitting signals, I don't see the reason for me to use my gear when I want to. Thanks for a good read.

When the kid behind you kicks your seat is one thing. I can live with that, its like a massage. But on an international flight where other people are trying to sleep, DONT let them blast their Nintendo 3ds. Nor let them hold a full-blown singalong to their favorite songs.

These have all happened to me. I personally did nothing except to glare at the parent who was encouraging the behavior.
