Not much of a reader, are you? Or writer, judging by your comment.

Oh, and you're also VERY tough, because you use curse words. I bet your mom wouldn't even let you on the computer if she saw that!!

Sorry, but you're blaming the WRONG group of people. You can whine at the people pirating content, but they are going to do it regardless of what you say and what the law says. The culture is changing, and people like you insult people and people like those who run HBO are on the way out. I work in a school- I know what kids think. And this insane idea that they can't get Game of Thrones now doesn't make sense to them. It never will. So HBO can either make money or lose money. Blaming the pirates won't change anything.

I stopped pirating music when there is a paid alternative. I stopped pirating TV shows that I missed when there was a paid alternative. However, I will continue to pirate shows that there is not a paid alternative. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Its time for YOU to grow up.

Who says it doesn't make economic sense to them? Maybe they've done the research and the revenue gained from standalone subscribers wouldn't make up for the loss of revenue lost from bundle subscribers if HBO were to offer their content without tethering it to a cable subscription. Just because you pirate their content now, and you wouldn't if they were to do X, doesn't mean it doesn't make economic sense for them not to do it.

Why do articles like this assume that companies like Time Warner are entitled to continue making the same profits and being the same size as they are currently, regardless of technological developments that kill their business models? They grew too big when they had the distribution channels by the balls, when they chose to force people to subsidise cynically-produced crap that fattened bottom lines and executive payouts. Now that technology has caught up with them they're fighting tooth and nail, to the point of forcing though legislation across the world, to protect an obese business model that has been soundly obsoleted. I'm no fan of piracy, but let's not pretend that these dinosaurs deserve their revenues. They invested far more heavily in their distribution lockdown than they did in producing only the best content. They (unlike their customers) valued distribution more than content. They worked themselves into a position where they were selling something other than what their consumers wanted to buy. They sold distribution, and their consumers put up with that to buy content. Now this is coming back to bite them, as technology devalues their distribution and consumers decide to pick only the minority of content that they perceive as having any value. Of course customers feel entitled to have easy access to content – from their point of view, that's what what they've been buying all along. The entertainment industry are the whiners, not the consumer. They're not facing up to the inevitable. They deserve to get smaller, and their profits should shrink, because the thing they were selling is no longer valuable. This may seem harsh, but I work in publishing, another industry that's been rendered obsolete by technology, and I have zero sympathy for these crybabies. They have a chance to sell just content, sell what has value to their customers, but they're eschewing it and choosing to whine and lash out instead. I consider the pirate vs network war to be a war in which both sides are morally condemnable, but one in which the pirates hold an unassailable advantage. The industry will shrink, and it will only have itself to blame. It's just business.

And the best way for HBO to go out of business? Ignore pragmatic approaches to selling your content until your generation dies out and cord cutters force HBO's hand. You're really not making the point of why you should pay for cable, you're just whining because you got caught, and now you pay them what they want because you feel guilty for wanting a service they don't provide.

You did the logical thing and got caught with your hand in the Game of Thrones cookie jar. Imagine what would happen if you could just pay a fee to get in that specific cookie jar? And pay a different fee for the Dexter cookie jar? Or the Wire cookie jar?

The more people who stop buying into the cable business plan the better. It will only force the content creators to seek the customers directly, instead of rely on middle men to recoup the costs associated with content creation.

How do you watch Game of Thrones without paying $1,200 over the course of a year? Don't watch Game of Thrones.

The position behind my argument is that in today's age of global access to data, and proliferation of easily accessible access to said data across the internet, only a company who was so short sighted and who had missed the boat on how technology works, and in which direction technology is moving would take this stick their head in the sand approach to gated access. If you don't provide users with a way to get the content they want legally, they WILL get it illegally, plain and simple. I don't care how much you stamp your feet, or bitch and moan, if you are a content creator, then your content WILL be universally distributed, either legally, or otherwise. So if you want to take a cut...you'd better offer a legal option.

People, the article is not about having to subscribe to a bunch of crappy shows to get one good one, it's not about waiting for blu-ray release, etc.. So why are all commenters disagreeing with the article going on about how they don't like the content providers' business model of forced bundling with other content, subscription models, and blue-ray release schedules. The article isn't about all of that.

The article is about whether you are justified in pirating their content just because it isn't available in the format, time, or price that you like. Why not go without it instead?

What he was saying that if you want something that is available, pay for it. If it's not available in the format you want, or it's too expensive, then go without it. I can't think of any medical condition that requires you to need to watch a TV show to stay alive. You don't *need* to watch a TV show.

Going without it sends a message. Heck, start a letter writing campaign too. When you pirate it, what message are you sending? Even if you buy the Blu Ray later, there's no way to correlate that with you pirating it six months earlier.

not at all the case. They also want to exert some control over the way the market develops. They have a vested interest in making sure the market functions in ways that they feel are optimal rather than letting the market develop in ways that consumers may feel are optimal. It's not all that uncommon a strategy for a company to want to exert some influence on the ways the market functions so as to achieve a state they feel is more optimal for them. That "optimal market" involves not just dollars and cents, but also issues such as control of content.

It's a totally fallacious argument to claim that this is soley because outlets like netflix are simply not profitable for them.

Different studios have different contracts with netflix, and some are more expensive than others. It should be obvious to everyone that if the issue was simply dollars and cents, that it would be at least theoretically possible for them to negotiate a contract where they get paid more... it would then be up to netflix (or other content providers) whether they were willing to pay that amount. The driving factor would then be netflix's decision, not HBO's. Is that the picture we see here? NO! The fact that HBO is simply not willing to come to the table to discuss, should make it obvious to everyone, that the real issue isn't just about short term dollars and cents. It's about how the market grows and develops, and which directions HBO prefers those markets to go.

All I can say Philip, is that if you work for a technology company, you should be fired for your incredible lack of foresight, or at least assigned to a job around as technical as cleaning the damn toilets.

Cable TV is a dying technology, just like the telegraph. Long past are the days where tech savvy consumers accept that they must purchase 250 channels of garbage to get the five they will watch. If a content provider refuses to let people buy their content ala carte, they will be forced to contend with piracy, and as an entity who is ignoring it's customer base, rightfully so.

I am simply ashamed of you, someone in your position (where you have a soap box upon which to speak) should be advising the industry it into moving forward rather than scolding consumers who demand content providers change with the times.

Like many consumers, I cut cable years ago, but not to save money. Rather I repurposed that extra cash to buy faster Internet, and got a subscription or two to online content providers. If HBO would sell me their service streamed online for 10 bucks a month, then they would be among those who got paid. I'm not sure what percentage of the $15 premium surcharge that cable companies are billing actually goes to the content producers like HBO, but I'd wager it's less than 66%.

Every. Single. Commenter. Fails. To. Address. Mr. Berne's. Point.

Are you claiming that HBO has no financial analysts and that somehow they've just missed what hipster kids can see - that if they just sold their product for almost nothing, they'd make so much more money? Anyone making this argument has to explain how a large company like HBO somehow misses this, or concede the fact that HBO stays in business by operating in the way that makes it the most money - which then makes all their demands, well, whining. Enough people are willing to pay the price. If Game Of Thrones is HBO's "killer app", the content that makes the entire purchase price worthwhile, you would NEVER, EVER allow your killer app to show up on other platforms. Apple learned this when Jobs left and they explored licensing the OS. People pay the inflated hardware prices just to get the OS. Offer the OS separately and at least in the desktop arena hardware sales would plunge. If HBO offered you GoT for a few bucks, the same thing would happen. It's not "blackmailing" - it's business, just like platform exclusive titles drive game console sales.

So, when I was younger-there was no cable, but there were still some well done 'art' broadcast freely over the airwaves. And every blockbuster movie eventually made it to a broadcast station. So the majority of our country were able to be a part of our culture as American. This seems to be saying our culture comes at a cost that is increasingly pricing Americans out of American Art and Culture.. Capitalism even in culture eh?? I was under the impression art was created primarily for admiration, not profits-yet profit seems to be everyone's primary objective; culture be !@#*&%!
PS Folks: The Books are awesome and can be borrowed from the library for free!
