Yes-suh! You might have bought your iPad in June of 2012 and it could be any of the three iPad iterations Apple has put out there since the beginning of iPad itself.

As others have noted -- unnecessary conversation then ensues.

I'm not here to bash...just an observation. Here's the problem with the naming convention, (and actually maybe more attributed to a lack of an easily disernable model number); What do we tell "them" when we want to replace a broken part such as the screen? What exact words would one use to get the precise part you need for you device? So people now have to lookup some something cryptic on possibly Apple's website and then translate that to the Generation of the product. (If we are buying this replacement part from an established company things might all match up...however goodluck to all of us trying to do the same via an individual or a company that didn't match up their parts properly.) I speak from experience...I had the wrong iTouch screen sent to me...they infact matched up the the iTouch part with the wrong Gen internally. This is just a small blip (i feel) for yet another amazing product. Go Apple!

Some clearly swallowed 'the reasoning' easier than others. The point being missed is that the rational of the naming is solely to the benefit of Apple but not necessarily in the practical interests of actual consumers. As a neutral looking in, the fact that Apple consumers defend this is amusing. Where is the logic in that? End of observation.

What about the confusion after the purchase? Try buying accessories when physically different products all have the same name. One of the recent holders I purchased had differences for the iPad and iPad2 due to the size. I had the iPad2 so knew which to buy. In the future, will "iPad" mean the original, the iPad2, or the new iPad? Then what's next, the newer new iPad?

I ran into this very problem when trying to get a car dock for an older iPod Nano. Since multiple generations all have the same name, I had to do research online to first figure out which generation I had and then try to find a matching dock. A simple addition of 2,3,4, etc. to the Nano name for each version would end all confusion. It's disappointing to see the iPad going back to this confusing lack of name change for new versions.

It's bland to the point that it didn't warrant a number 3. They are saving that for the next one that has some real innovation apparently. 4G is innovation? Heavier is innovation? Same battery life is innovation? Same thickness is innovation? Same price is innovation? Yeah, it doesn't deserve the 3. But yeah, it's the worst decision I've seen in a long while. If you start the number game, guess what? But in that case, this one gets 2.1 and not the 3.

They don't need to. Apple stuff just works. Lol. I know that is a really hard concept to grasp coming from an Android/Windows perspective. If something ever does go wrong, drop it off at an Apple store and they will either fix it then or you will walk out with a new one. And yes, I mean new "one" meaning MacBook Pri, iPhone, iPad or whatever.
