I think the other key point is that retailers WILL be upgrading their POS terminals to NFC soon enough. The primary driver will be that a POS terminal upgrade is needed to support EMV (both Visa and MasterCard have announced formal programs for EMV support in the USA) and given ALL major phone vendors either have or plan to soon implement NFC, the merchant would be well advised to put in a dual mode EMV / NFC POS terminal. Also, while NFC mobile wallets are brand new, they too will experience a fairly steep growth curve – otherwise, VISA and ISIS wouldn’t be betting so heavy on it.

When the chip and pin was introduced in UK, it was not because customers wanted it or retailers were very much interested in it. It was because banks can reduce their fraud claims (whether genuine or not).

RFID could have delivered the 'total basket cost' by reading the basket as a whole without individual scanning and slashing queue times, but no organisation is intereted in delivering it instead using it only as deterrent for stealing high value items.

Hope NFC does not go the same route because of inter-company spats / mistrust and delivers some benefits to consumer
