I had an opportunity to test out the Motorola i880 at a recent event in NYC this week. The handset is a clamshell design with a unique snakeskin casing and features music-dedicated keys. The Motorola i880 is FCC approved and should goes on sale October 1, 2006. Sprint rep must have told me the price ten times, but as you know with old age, your memory is first to go. Let me get back with you on the pricing. Specs and more images after the jump.

Features:
- MP3 playback with stereo speakers
- Bluetooth
- 2.2-megapixel camera
- microSD
- Dual color displays
- PTT
- GPS
- WiDEN for fast mobile data

I was just wondering if you have to have a nextel account to get this phone because i want nextel phone because the nextel ptt is very popular here and the sprint people told me not to get a nextel account because they are coming out with sprint/nextel phones, so can you get back to me?
mahalo/thanks

I was just wondering if they are coming out with different colors for this phone, especially the silver and black version. In addition, when would this different color be released?

Nextel and Sprint are only together in name. If you like the Nextel phones you do need a Nextel account. At the end of this year they are talking about releasing a line of phones that will work off the Sprint cell towers and the Nextel Direct connect towers. But until then everything is seperate.

I could not have said it better myself. The dual mode iden/sprint unit is actually expected to drop in november. Just a basic clamshell style phone. NO camera from what i have seen but it will be first of many to come

Yes they are coming out with a duel soon the ic502 which is on limited release but soon afterwards, (not sure on date) they are coming out with the ic902 which has (i believe) a 2mp camera.. looks basically just like the 502, try googling it.

Any idea what the price might be?
Neutralchago October 17, 2006
You do not need a Nextel account if you have Sprint, all you have to do is add the radio service to you existing Sprint plan, at least that’s what I was told by a Sprint / Nextel store, actually I’m waiting for the phone to come out to get mine but just to make sure, call Sprint customer service.

NeutralH.B. November 5, 2006
Just wondering….
Is this phone battery life going to be short like all the other nextel camera phones with mp3 playes because If it is I think it shouldn’t be a really big deal. It just going be like the I870 but smaller but anyway I still want it!!!

its really upsetting to me and others i know about how secretive these release dates are kept. i have a sprint cell phone barely working and would like a ic902, but no one can talk about a realese date. Keep in mind these arent CIA secrets, or JFKs secret files, ITS A CELL PHONE!!Should i buy any phone to hold me until my phone of choice is released?? or will i be waiting till 2008 for my “super secret”cell phone? I dont know because apparently its not good business practice to let very “appreciated customers” in on the secret.

I got this phone. It’s cool but its text messaging is really annoying and failed calls are a hassel. But I still love the phone.
