Spotify update includes "Fresh Finds" for rising talent

The newest update to Spotify will come this week, adding to their already popular "Discover Weekly" feature with "Fresh Finds." As if to say "please, please listen to something other than Coldplay or Skrillex," Spotify has created yet another way for users to find new and exciting rising musical stars. Five categories are being added as a part of this initiative, including Basement, Cyclone, Fire Emoji, Hiptronix, and Six Strings.

That's right, Fire Emoji. Not fire. Not "these tracks are so fire". The title of the category is "Fire Emoji." So you know we're dealing with hipster elite here. This is no rinky dink operation. We're now a part of the future, one in which the word "emoji" makes more sense than actually adding the emoji itself.

It's the same thing as when the hashtag became so used that typing the word hashtag made certain your friends understood what you meant. That you didn't want to just hashtag a word, you wanted to go deeper. Inception.

If you're in the mood for fresh breakout tracks spread across the entire collection of genres, you're going to want to seek out the "Fresh Finds" category. The rest are as follows:

• Fire Emoji (hip-hop)

• Basement (electronic)

• Hiptronix (vocal pop)

• Six Strings (guitar driven)

• Cyclone (experimental)

"Spotify has always focused on artists and listeners," said Dr. Brian Whitman, Principal Scientist at Spotify, "and with Fresh Finds we're specifically looking at new creators, digging deeper to understand how undiscovered artists can attract a huge fan base."

"By analyzing the listening behavior of our top tastemaker users, we're able to predict new breakout artists and filter their hits-to-be into playlists with the most promising new music out there."

To find Fresh Finds, hit your Browse button. There they'll be. Playlists will be updated and refreshed every Wednesday.
