There is a great explanation on the Sparrow website. Go there, click Support, click FAQ under Sparrow for iPhone and then scroll down to Push. That will explain things for you.

Basically they are not talking about notifications but something entirely different.

Click on advanced to look at email accounts. Gmail, for example, does not have a push option only fetch or manual.
