Why shouldn't the Internet be considered a basic human right when it comes to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? It's no stretch that it's become a major force for entertainment and communication. For many it's hard to separate online life from real life nowadays, it's so integrated. Nearly half of American adults own and use smartphones with Internet access. Computers now outnumbers television sets per household. Most of them certainly have Internet access. Maybe it should be included in the Bill of Rights. Or do you think that only the rich and powerful should have access to the Internet? The original Constitution was intended for rich white land owners and wasn't intended for blacks. It had to be amended to include them. In the future the Bill of Rights will most certainly contain a provision to protect privacy on the Internet.

Nobody is suggesting that an employee has the right to waste company time on the Internet. But the employer shouldn't have the right to fire an employee because HR 1981 public documents disclosed that he had a gambling addiction. It's more like HR1984: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU 24/7!

While I understand the difference between a right and a privilege (for instance, driving is a privilege and not a right) I think that having access to the Internet tends to be more like having the right to access a public library. Yes, I may not have privileged access to all of its private rooms that are accessible only to premium members, however, I do have the right to access all of its public areas.

Plus, the Federal Legislative Branch has a long history of presenting bills that amend other bills, effectively defeating their purpose. Republicans are trying hard to get rid of Pres. Obama's health care reform. So, no, it isn't illogical to suggest a law designed to prevent the passage of another law. There are plenty of them already on the books.

Heres a quote from a famous document that prevents certain laws from being written:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I am a Republican, and I can assure you that many, if not most, Republicans are NOT in support of Lamar Smiths vision of big and intrusive government. Some social "big government" conservatives certainly are, but even among those there is a discomfort with giving the government more power.

Ron Paul is NOT the solution. He is a multitude of problems just waiting to happen. He's not wrong on everything IMO, but the things he IS wrong on are too serious to allow him into power.

For the record, the so-called "UN laws" do not apply at all to the US. In fact they apply nowhere on Earth. The UN is a toothless, corrupt, talking shop. They are unelected by the people, and thererfore have NO legitimacy, except that which we (the people of the nations of Earth) choose to give them. They have no military, therefore they have no power. We can not and should not pretend to depend on the UN to "protect us" from anything. To do so is like depending on a toothless and corrupt old fox--to guard the chickens. It is neither capable of it, nor is it inclined to it. It is toothless, corrupt--and a fox! The chickens (us) must look elsewhere for our protection--primarily to ourselves!! We are the ultimate source of power on Earth, and the ONLY source of legitimate power and authority.

And finally, despite the fact that I am a Republican, I say Lamar Smith needs to go--NOW! He is on the wrong side of "big government vs small government", and on the wrong side of individual privacy.

Get rid of him for us Texas!

Get rid of him for us Texas!

... The government is making all these bills because of one guy. So many people disagree with this, but they don't even care. Don't they realize there's more citizens than the people who run the government..? Privacy is a pretty hard thing on the internet, but this, is just insanity.
