Good news for Japanese customers looking for a good deal on a gaming system! While it’s not an enormous price drop, Sony’s current-generation PlayStation 2 machine has seen a small cut over in Japan, dropping from between 17800-19800 yen (about $152-$169 USD) to 16000 yen, or about $136.50 USD. Again, the long-awaited drop isn’t the huge cut that some would have liked to have seen, but hey, it’s better than nothing, right? The new prices will take effect on September 15th, so if you were thinking about grabbing a Japanese PS2, it might be best to wait until then.

The price drop will arrive as two new hardware revisions; the black SCPH-77000 CB and the white SCPH-77000 CW. Neither of these revisions offer any new functionality over the current SCPH-75000 series. Could we also be looking at a PS2 price cut in Europe and the US? Sony hasn’t commented one way or the other, so we’ll need to sit back and see if what happens. We might not get one yet as the PS2 already retails for $129.99 here, but hey, stranger things have happened.
