Sony Xperia Z5 UK prices soar insanely high

Sony has just revealed its trio of flagship smartphones for the rest of the year and there are bound to be mixed, and maybe even high, emotions regarding these smartphones' features. Depending on your inclinations and needs, you might find the specs either disappointing or just what the doctor prescribed. Or maybe even both. Whatever your take is, this latest revelation might just change your opinion a wee bit. Sony's UK online shop has just posted the prices for the Xperia Z5 family, and needless to say, it will cost you more than you expected.

At the very lowest is the Xperia Z5 Compact, which already comes in at 549 GBP, which is immediately $838 when converted. The main Xperia Z5 goes for just a bit higher, understandable considering the two aren't that different in most places, but 599 GBP is still a whopping $914. By now you probably get the pattern. The most premium 4K Xperia Z5 premium costs 699 GBP, an astounding $1,067.

Of course, these are raw, converted numbers and US prices might not reflect that. For example, the Xperia Z3+, a.k.a. the Xperia Z4, goes for 499 GBP ($761) in the UK and roughly $670 in the US depending on where you get it. But let's look at it from the context of other UK prices. The Xperia Z3+ and the Xperia Z5 are almost identical, differing only in a few features like the camera and fingerprint sensors and slightly in the design. Would that justify a 100 GBP bump? And that's not even considering yet the prices of other, and maybe even better, flagship smartphones in the market.

It seems that Sony is playing with fire here and while their smartphones have always looked premium, these new premium prices might be asking too much. Granted, the OEM could still change the prices before they launch, but as they say, first impressions last.
