I guess the Ion will be a better choice if you like how it
looks. I personally like S because the size the color and the fact that it only
have 3 buttons under the screen instead of 4. Also, the Ion supposed to give a
better experience with its HSPA, however, I feel the 3G on S is good enough now
if you are not planning to make video calls or use your phone to watch
streaming films on the road...

I took the plunge and bought one, having finally found a shop that would take one out even if they wouldn't remove the shipping film before I'd paid up. Looked all right to me, and has proven fine since. No noticeable graininess or digitiser grid, and in fact (contrary to unboxings etc) there was no screen protector pre-fitted, just one in the box. Suspect a rogue review unit. The camera button is stiff, and a big part of the problem there is that the half press takes the button flush to the body, then the final press goes further, so it's more like using the reset button on a PC. I've tried (and now ordered) a gel case with it, and the raised camera button on that seemed to improve the usability significantly.

Interesting review, and the first in-depth one I've seen. A bit concerned about the digitiser grid visibility and camera button usability issues (and my local shop refuses to take one out of the box to actually check), though I do wonder if the screen's "strange graininess" referred to was the screen protector that comes pre-fitted? I've noticed iPhones appearing quite grainy from the same, just a thought?
