Sony Xperia M now available in the US

The Sony Xperia M first made its appearance in early June, with Sony showing off the handset and a dual-SIM variation of it with a promise that it would launch in the third quarter of this year. Such a time has come, with the handset first going on sale in Asia and Europe, and now showing up for U.S. customers at the Sony Store.

The Sony Xperia M is a solid mid-range handset featuring a 4-inch 854 x 480 display, which Sony says is made to be scratch-resistant. Beyond that, there's a moderate 1GHz dual-core processor on board alongside 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage space, with expansion being possible up to 32GB via a microSD slot. The software is slightly dated at Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The rear camera is 5-megapixels with 4x digital zoom, auto focus, image stabilization, and flash. The camera's software offers some additional features, namely Panorama, Touch, Smile Shutter, and Quick Launch. Video recording tops out at 720p HD, while video playback supports both 3GPP and MP4, both of which are also supported as audio files in addition to AMR.

Audio also has support for HD Voice and features 3D Surround Sound, ClearAudio+, Clear Phase, and Clear Bass, as well as Dynamic Normalizer and a Manual Equalizer. As far as connectivity goes, there's Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi and NFC. There's a WiFi Hotspot feature for turning the data connection into a hotspot, as well as aGPS and DLNA.

Cellular aspects include HSPA+ and GPRS/EDGE, while software includes the standard Google app offerings, Sony Entertainment and other assorted Sony offerings, as well as the NeoReader barcode scanner. The handset is priced at $249.99 USD.
