google places too much faith in the cloud and bandwidth. no storage on chrome books is almost TOO Forward thinking compared to Apple who rightfully jettisoned Flash and disc readers.

Chrome assumes the cloud will always be accessible... yeah right.. then the throttling begins and you can only view 3 pictures and 5 emails before that $400 chromebook costs $900 additional a year.

I've been running various flavors of chrome os in a vm for some time to see what the hubub was about. I have to say, i just don't get it. I can find nothing special about the os aside from enhanced abilities for logging into Google services.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Win8. I have it running on an hp slate 500, and it's great on the touchscreen, and IE10 is outperforming the browser in chrome os. So, I get everything chrome os has plus local apps...

Sorry guys, I just don't get it. I've been trying for about a year, and I just don't get it.

It's maintenance free and highly secure. There's nothing like it. And it seems to have plenty of apps. It has some rough edges, too, absolutely, but for what I needed a second computer for - Facebook and blog reading and wikipedia lookups in the living room, it's unmatched. SSD drive, instant-on, simple account management for google services, cheap games, private data is wiped out if the system is 'rooted'.

And I'll put it another way: it's more functional and has more apps than the upcoming Metro environment from MS, with very similar strengths and weaknesses. Local storage in 2012 is overrated. What goes in local storage? For me, it's pretty much photos and financial info that I don't want on a second, portable, lose-able machine. My desktop stays in my home, my phone and laptop don't. I hope people are waking up to that.

Having said all that, the ipad makes a lot of sense, too, but my wife wanted something with a keyboard. And I didn't want another headache (spoken as a programmer and IT admin).

I don't think Samsung or LG (or any other manufacturer) have had much success with their Chromebooks, so it's a bit surprising to see Sony planning one.

Yes, a Chromebook might be the only computer a light user would need, but you can do the same things with a netbook plus have a full-on OS included.

The only way I can see Sony succeeding with this (if they do release it) is for it to have some sort of super stand-out feature like 20+ battery life

If you did all your work in the cloud, you would easily understand. Even though I don't use a Chromebook, I do the majority of my work in the cloud using the Chrome browser. I can move from my desktop, to my laptop, to a friends computer, to my android phone, ipad, etc. and everything is in perfect sync. No memory sticks to transfer documents, no manually uploading/syncing files between computers, it's just all there. I never planned it that way, it's just the way things have migrated for me.
