Sounds like Ligiea wants a JooJoo. Remember that? It got swamped by the iPad.

The fact is that while *some* consumers will always want a cheaper, scaled-down version of existing products, not many people do. The computing industry learned that the hard way in the 1980s. That is why the Commodore 64GS (a C64 without a keyboard) failed, and so did the CDTV, which was an Amiga without a keyboard that could only run CDs. The same was true of the JooJoo and the same would be true of the hypothetical tablet wished for here.

That's quite apart from the difficulty of making anything like this for such a low price. Most of the competitors to the iPad were priced higher than the iPad itself originally, and have been forced to drop in price to match it. That is because Apple has various structural reasons why it can afford to offer a lower price (such as having its own network of stores, and being the market leader allows them to manufacture in greater volume), and that has forced down the price of the others. Again, the JooJoo was originally supposed to be about $200, but the price went up and up until it was basically competing with the iPad despite offering far less.

You're right, I know at least 10 people might actually buy this. I mean that's what...£100 of profit waiting for a company right there.

By contrast, the tablets that exist at the moment are setup for a target audience in the millions. Offering simple usage scenarios, and additional features for power users. Asking for HDMI in a tablet goes against the usage scenario for such a device - especially one with no onboard storage or camera. Why plug it into your telly, when you already suggest that your content is on a separate machine: why not just buy a media streamer?

First of all Vincent, thanks for the most detailed review I have seen so far. This tablet has some features I'm looking for and some features that might be helpful. I still think Honeycomb needs more work and most of the tablets are just too expensive. Until we see a more evolved Android tablet OS (Ice Cream?) and more aggressive pricing I don't think they compete well with iPad2.

Are you convinced that Samsung, Sony and the rest are committed to Android on Tablets; or are they still feeling their way along?

Do none of the manufacturers see the opportunity for a non-iPad competitor? While this tablet seems awful cool here's what I want...

A tablet that doesn't have the ability to download or install apps. I want a touchscreen tablet:
- That has integrated browser (with Flash!), email, calendar, alarm apps
- Integrated music player app that'll stream from a local network PC, Mac or Ubuntu
- Wifi
- HDMI port, 3.5mm aux port
- (I have to admit I'd like one of those nifty IR ports that Sony put in this guy)

That's it!!! No games. No camera. You could get away with less than one gig of memory too since you wouldn't be able to install any add'l apps... Is this tablet out there? Make it for $250 or less and I know a SLEW of people that'd buy it.
