It’s really amazing how far display technology has come in the recent years. It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that I was showing off my 19-inch flat CRT monitor because it was the coolest thing ever. Of course it barely fit on my desk, but it was flat, and that’s cool. Now fast-forward to the Display 2007 show over in Tokyo where Sony is showing off some incredible new OLED displays.

The first one measures in at only 9 millimeters thin, that’s about as thick as a pencil. What’s really awesome is that it is an HD display with a resolution of 1080p. Did I mention that was the bigger of the two displays? They were also showing off one that was 3mm thick. For comparison, the average USB cable is about 4mm thick. Now that’s a flat panel! Granted, this one only has displays in 1024 x 600, but it’s still incredible.

No word on when Sony will be releasing these to the public, but hopefully they come soon. My LCD monitors are starting to look rather bulky all of the sudden.
