Analysts at gaming magazine publisher Enterbrain are busy claiming the Japanese launch of the much-coveted PS3 a huge success for Sony, given that in the first two days of availability 88,400 consoles have been sold, leaving many stores without stock. Personally, I’d say they could’ve done better – Sony are saying they shipped 100,000 units even after the Blu-Ray manufacturing problems, which leaves 11,600 unsold according to my magic calculator.
Thousands of fans queued for hours, and 62% of all consoles sold were the more-expensive 60gb version; most popular games were Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight, selling around 30,000 copies each.
Cheer up, Sony. I’m sure someone will take those final few thousand off your hands. You could always turn to eBay?

I’m not suprised at their sales. Playstation 3 is the biggest hit that is to come around. Ebay shows it, with Wii with prices low versus playstation 3 prices can sky rocket up to nearly 3G. Shocking but true. I personally have gotten a JP PS3 and it is the best system despite the cost of it. It’s really really really impressive. So about those Lik Sang Sony Boy-cotters…um…how do you feel now? lol. Small? haha. The urge to buy one is here.

i’m wondering why you and many other news posters keep posting about the lack of a sell out. there were only supposed to be 80,000 japanese launch units, not 100,000. they managed to deliver a few more.

I know i wont be buying one…sees like a waste of money to me…88%…i would’ve thought that as many fans as there supposedly are, 100% would be gone…and AJ…i don’t feel sall @ all…a minority of the world owns a PS3…that makes e feel like the majority, which is pretty damn big…i’m only urged to buy a Wii…now those are going to be some big numbers.

Nice try…they sold out all of the available units. They sold 88,000. Which were all of the AVAILABLE units. Just because they originally promised 100,000 doens’t mean they only sold 88% of them. You just tripped over the fine line between spin and a flat out lie. Bad pseudo-journalists, BAD!

This is the most inaccurate news source I have seen lately. I will never be coming back here again to get news. I wish they would do just a little fact checking before posting “news” like this.

That was an earlier report I assume, because Sony came out later and slashed its prediction to 80,000. So 88k is more than that and is every PS3 in Japan. With the amount of people camping out there and the price they are going for on ebay, there is no way people are going to let them sit on store shelves.

The 80,000 was never confirmed either way – every story I’ve seen quoting that figure credits Japanese paper Nikkei Keizai Shimbun and Sony have yet to validate it. Since retailers are yet to release sales figures, and didn’t reveal how many consoles they had to sell in the first place, any preliminary figures are just that: preliminary and speculative. As you’ll see in my article, I was clear to point out that the 88,400 figure came from analysts Enterbrain, rather than Sony themselves.
NeutralI appreciate that emotions run high when it comes to consoles – it’s a credit to the manufacturers that they’ve built up such a fan-base – but to cling resolutely to one source merely because it better satisfies your console loyalties is, in my opinion, blinkered.
