Just a few days ago we passed along a rumor about a new cheaper PS2 that was in the works for 2008. The new version would be more streamlined and do away with the giant power brick. The best part of all is that the price would be dropped to $99. Unfortunately, that last part might not be true.

New PS2

Sony has already released the new version of the console dubbed SCPH-90000 in Japan. The console features the same look as the previous design, with the exception of the power brick which is gone. The new version also comes in white, silver and black.

The sad part is that in addition to looking the same as the previous generation, it also carries the same price tag of around $140. There’s still a chance that we’ll get the lower price next year, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
